Empire of Blood

Chapter 73 – Shared Ground

The shift came before anyone said anything.

Jack felt it first, not as a sound or a visible movement, but as a change in the way the forest responded around Silver Vale, the subtle tension that built when something large entered an area that was already controlled.

Riven moved before anyone else reacted.

He stepped forward out of the treeline fully for the first time, his posture tightening as his attention fixed on a direction none of them had been watching closely a moment ago.

“West edge,” he said.

Kael turned immediately.

“How many?” he asked.

Riven’s gaze remained locked outward.

“Not a patrol,” he replied. “Something pushed them.”

That was enough.

The mood shifted instantly, not into panic, but into readiness, as several people in the surrounding area began moving with quiet efficiency, tools set aside, weapons picked up, positions taken without needing to be assigned.

Jack watched it happen for half a second.

Then he moved.

“Show me,” he said.

Kael nodded once.

They didn’t wait.

The group moved together, not as one unit, but with a shared direction, Silver Vale’s fighters taking the lead through terrain they knew, while Jack and his squad followed just behind, their spacing adjusting naturally to the tighter paths that wound between preserved trees and shaped ground.

The western edge of the settlement wasn’t open.

It was controlled.

The terrain had been shaped just enough to create lines of movement that could be defended without building walls, shallow rises and dips forcing anything approaching to adjust its path while leaving clear footing for those who already knew the space.

Jack noticed that immediately.

Efficient.

Different from Sanguina.

They reached the edge.

The reason for the shift became obvious.

A group of Gravehide Wolves (Lv.13–15) moved through the outer treeline, their bodies lean but dense with muscle, their fur darker and matted in a way that suggested more than just natural growth, their eyes fixed on the settlement with a level of focus that went beyond simple hunting.

They didn’t rush.

They spread.

Testing.

Jack triggered Identify.

[Identify]

Name: Gravehide Wolf

Level: 14

Traits:

  • Pack Coordination

  • Reinforced Hide

  • Bleed Resistance

Jack’s attention sharpened.

Bleed resistance.

That mattered.

Kael saw it too.

“Don’t rely on damage over time,” he said.

Jack nodded slightly.

“Figures.”

Riven moved first.

He disappeared into motion rather than stepping into it, his body slipping between the trees as he took a position further out, not engaging, but watching the edges of the pack instead of the center.

Flanking control.

Silver Vale spread out.

Not wide.

Precise.

Each of them took positions along the terrain’s natural lines, their spacing consistent, their movements controlled in a way that showed familiarity rather than reaction.

Jack didn’t interrupt that.

He adjusted around it.

“Sophie,” he said.

She glanced at him.

“Right side,” he continued. “Don’t overcommit.”

She nodded.

“Got it.”

The wolves moved first.

Not all at once.

One lunged.

Testing.

It targeted one of Silver Vale’s fighters on the left, its movement fast, controlled, its angle chosen to pressure rather than kill outright.

The fighter didn’t retreat.

He shifted.

The ground dipped slightly where he stood, giving him just enough leverage to redirect the attack instead of absorbing it, his counter landing cleanly along the wolf’s side without overextending.

Not a kill.

Control.

Another wolf moved.

Then another.

The fight expanded.

Jack stepped in.

“Blood Bolt.”

The projectile struck one of the advancing wolves mid-lunge, not stopping it, but shifting its path enough that it collided with uneven ground instead of clean footing.

It recovered quickly.

Too quickly.

Jack noted that.

He followed.

“Blood Scythe.”

The arc cut across its side, but the effect was different this time, the bleed taking hold slower, weaker, the resistance noticeable even without checking the system again.

Right.

Different enemies.

Sophie engaged on the right.

Two wolves.

She didn’t rush.

She adjusted.

Flow Step carried her across the terrain in controlled movement, her positioning tighter than before as she avoided being boxed in, her strikes placed to create space rather than end the fight immediately.

“Left,” she called.

One of the Sisters moved in, intercepting the angle before the second wolf could collapse on her.

Better.

Silver Vale’s fighters moved differently.

They didn’t push forward.

They held.

Each of their strikes built into the next, their positioning reinforcing each other instead of overlapping, their damage steady rather than explosive.

Jack saw it.

Understood it.

Didn’t adopt it.

He stepped forward again.

“Blood Bolt.”

“Blood Scythe.”

This time, he didn’t aim for sustained damage.

He aimed for impact.

The wolf staggered.

Then dropped.

Better.

Still not enough.

The fight intensified.

More wolves pressed in, their coordination tightening as they tested weaknesses, shifting targets faster than before, trying to isolate instead of overwhelm.

Riven moved again.

A wolf broke toward the outer edge.

It didn’t get far.

Riven intercepted it before it fully committed, his strike precise, controlled, not flashy, but effective enough that the wolf never rejoined the pack.

Jack noted that.

Different kind of strength.

Kael stepped forward then.

He hadn’t engaged directly yet.

Now he did.

His movement was controlled, his timing precise as he stepped into a gap the wolves hadn’t intended to leave, his strike landing not with overwhelming force, but with perfect placement that disrupted their formation instead of breaking it outright.

That mattered more.

Jack adjusted again.

The difference between them became clearer with every exchange.

Silver Vale controlled.

He pressured.

Together—

It worked.

The wolves began to falter.

Not all at once.

But enough.

Jack stepped forward one last time.

“Blood Bolt.”

The projectile hit.

“Blood Scythe.”

The arc followed.

The last of the wolves dropped.

The clearing settled.

This time—

Faster.

Not because the fight was easier.

But because it had been handled differently.

Jack exhaled slowly as he looked over the fallen wolves, then at the people around him, then back toward the treeline where the rest of the forest still waited.

Different.

But useful.

That was what mattered.

For now.
