Chapter 63 – The Difference
The forest had changed without announcing it.
What had started as dense but manageable terrain had gradually shifted into something rougher, the ground no longer even beneath their feet, but broken by exposed roots, shallow dips, and uneven rises that forced every step to be placed with more care than before.
The trees grew thicker here, their trunks wider and spaced just far enough apart to allow movement, but close enough that anything charging through them would either have to adjust or break through.
The undergrowth was patchy rather than dense, leaving lines of sight open in some directions while blocking them completely in others, creating natural lanes that funneled movement whether they wanted them to or not.
Jack slowed as they entered the area, his attention spreading across the terrain rather than locking onto a single direction, because this kind of ground didn’t just affect visibility.
It dictated how a fight would unfold.
“Hold,” he said quietly, raising his hand as the squad came to a controlled stop.
Sophie halted immediately to his right, her gaze moving across the same terrain, tracing the open spaces between the trees and the narrow paths created by the roots.
“What is it?” she asked.
Jack didn’t answer immediately, because he was watching how the forest itself reacted.
Then something shifted.
A large shape pushed through the undergrowth ahead, forcing branches aside rather than moving around them.
The Ridgeback Alpha Boar (Lv.14 Elite) stepped into view.
Up close, it looked even heavier than expected, its back lined with hardened ridges that rose like uneven plates, its hide thick and scarred in a way that suggested it had survived more than a few fights like this before.
The ground dipped slightly where it stepped forward, the soft soil compressing under its weight, the roots beneath shifting just enough to make its footing uneven.
It didn’t care.
It stopped.
And watched them.
Jack triggered Identify.
[Identify]
Name: Ridgeback Alpha Boar
Level: 14 (Elite)
Traits:
- Reinforced Ridge Armor
- Momentum Charge
- Pack Command
Jack’s gaze shifted to the sides.
Two more shapes moved through the trees behind it.
Ironhide Boars (Lv.12–13).
They didn’t step forward immediately.
They positioned themselves.
Using the terrain.
That confirmed it.
“This isn’t like the others,” Jack said. “Don’t treat it that way.”
Sophie nodded, her stance adjusting slightly as she shifted her footing onto a more stable section of ground between two roots.
“Same approach?” she asked.
“Adjusted,” Jack replied. “We control the space first.”
The Alpha moved.
It didn’t charge blindly.
It angled.
Its path cut through one of the natural lanes between the trees, avoiding the thicker roots and uneven dips as if it understood exactly where it could move fastest.
“Spread,” Jack said.
They moved, but the terrain made it harder than before, the uneven ground slowing some of them just enough that the spacing wasn’t as clean as it had been in open areas.
The Alpha hit.
Not directly.
It clipped the center of their formation, forcing them to shift around it as it pushed through the lane, its momentum carrying it forward before it turned sharply, using the slope of the ground to pivot faster than its size should have allowed.
Sophie engaged first.
She stepped in from the side, using the slight incline to guide her movement as she activated Flow Step, her body adjusting to the terrain instead of fighting it.
Her strike landed along the Alpha’s side.
It didn’t cut deeply.
The armor absorbed most of it.
The Alpha reacted instantly.
It slammed into her.
The impact drove her back across uneven ground, her footing slipping as she hit a root and lost balance, the fall breaking her momentum completely.
Jack felt the shift.
Still—
He didn’t move yet.
The others had to adjust.
One of the Sisters stepped in too directly, her strike aimed at the ridge where the armor was thickest.
The blade glanced off.
The Alpha turned toward her immediately.
Sophie moved.
She forced herself up, using the incline to regain her footing faster than she should have been able to, stepping in again before the Alpha could complete its turn.
“Left,” she said.
The Sister adjusted, stepping into a clearer space between the roots instead of backing into them.
The Alpha passed between them instead of hitting cleanly.
Better.
Still not controlled.
Jack stepped forward.
“Blood Bolt.”
The projectile struck the Alpha mid-turn, shifting its angle just enough that its movement carried it into a patch of uneven ground, forcing it to slow for a fraction of a second as it corrected its footing.
That was all he needed.
“Don’t hit the ridge,” he said. “Use the sides, and don’t fight it in the lanes.”
They adjusted.
This time, their strikes landed along the exposed sections, not deep, but placed better, forcing the Alpha to react instead of driving straight through.
The two Ironhide Boars moved in then, using a different path through the trees, circling around the denser terrain to approach from the sides rather than following directly.
They were using the environment.
“Split them,” Jack said.
The squad shifted again, this time more deliberately, pulling the fight out of the narrow lanes and into a slightly more open patch where the ground was still uneven, but less restrictive.
The Alpha followed.
Of course it did.
Jack stepped forward, feeling the shift in the fight as the terrain became less of a constraint and more of a factor he could use instead of work around.
This was where it changed.
Not because the enemy was weaker.
But because now—
They could actually fight it.
