Chapter 54 – Breaking Point
The second wave never ended cleanly, and instead of collapsing the way the first had, it stretched thinner across the field until the pressure simply lingered, refusing to disappear in a way that would have allowed them to reset properly.
Jack felt it immediately, because the rhythm didn’t drop, and the line never fully relaxed.
“Stay ready,” he said, his voice steady as he watched the treeline.
Hanna didn’t question it and moved along the front, adjusting spacing again. “Don’t tighten up just because it slowed down. If you bunch up now, you’re going to get hit together instead of one at a time.”
Someone muttered a quiet acknowledgment, and more importantly, adjusted.
Behind them, Adelaide was already handling three injured at once, her movements precise despite the increasing pressure.
“Sit down and stop arguing,” she said as she tightened a wrap around someone’s side. “If you’re bleeding, that comes first.”
“I can still—”
“No,” she replied calmly. “You can’t.”
The woman stopped arguing.
Jack’s focus snapped forward again as movement returned.
This time it didn’t spread.
It gathered.
The third wave broke through the trees in a tighter formation, larger bodies pushing forward with more weight, their movement sharper and more direct, forcing reaction instead of allowing control.
“Brace,” Hanna said.
This time it mattered.
The first impact hit hard enough to push two of the Sisters back instead of one, and the second followed immediately, forcing the line to bend instead of hold.
Jack moved without hesitation.
“Sanguine Grasp.”
The tendril snapped forward and caught one of the leading beasts, but instead of being thrown completely off balance, it resisted, its momentum only partially disrupted.
Stronger.
He stepped in immediately.
“Blood Shield.”
The barrier formed just as the next impact hit, and this time the strain was immediate and obvious, the force pushing through instead of settling cleanly, driving him back half a step.
Not normal.
He pivoted and finished the creature quickly.
[You have defeated: Forest Ravager (Lv.10)]
[Experience Gained: 320 EXP]
More pushed through.
The pressure didn’t stop.
Jack activated Sanguine Surge again and moved along the line instead of through it, stepping into pressure points and breaking momentum where it built, allowing the Sisters to recover and finish instead of carrying the entire fight himself.
It worked.
But only just.
Then the ground shifted.
He felt it before he saw it.
Something heavier.
“Something bigger,” he said.
Hanna didn’t look away from the line. “Figures.”
The trees parted.
It stepped through.
The Redmaw Tyrant didn’t need speed to dominate the field, because its size and density alone changed how the space worked, its thick, layered hide looking less like natural growth and more like something reinforced over time.
Jack triggered Identify immediately.
[Identify]
Name: Redmaw Tyrant
Level: 15 (Elite)
Traits:
- Reinforced Hide
- Rage Escalation
- Impact Charge
The level didn’t matter.
The type did.
“Line back,” Jack said.
“Fall back two steps,” Hanna repeated instantly.
They moved.
The Tyrant didn’t rush at first.
It watched.
Then it moved.
Too fast.
It hit the line like a force instead of a creature, breaking formation enough to send two of the Sisters off balance and drop one completely.
Jack stepped in.
“Blood Shield.”
The impact slammed into him directly, the force driving him backward as the barrier cracked under pressure instead of absorbing it cleanly.
He felt something give in his torso.
Then the pain followed.
He didn’t stop.
“Sanguine Surge.”
He stepped forward and struck across the Tyrant’s side, but the blade didn’t sink properly, the reinforced hide resisting the cut.
Not enough.
The Tyrant reacted instantly.
It hit him again.
This time the force threw him off his feet entirely.
He hit the ground hard, the air leaving his lungs as his vision blurred for a fraction of a second.
Then the pain hit fully.
Too sharp.
Too immediate.
He forced himself up anyway.
Blood was already pooling beneath him.
Too much.
[Level Up — 25]
[Class Evolution Available]
The interface expanded immediately.
Choose Evolution Path:
- Blood Berserker
- Sanguine Controller
- Blood Reaver
Jack read it once.
That was enough.
Berserker meant committing fully to damage and losing control over pacing.
Controller meant control, but not enough raw output to deal with something like this quickly.
Reaver.
Balanced.
Bleed scaling.
Execution.
That was what he needed.
Blood Reaver selected.
[Class Evolved → Blood Reaver]
The system updated immediately.

The Tyrant was already moving.
Jack reacted.
“Blood Bolt.”
The projectile formed instantly and struck the Tyrant mid-charge, forcing it off its direct line just enough to disrupt the impact.
He stepped in.
“Blood Scythe.”
The weapon extended beyond his normal reach, the arc wider and heavier, cutting through the reinforced hide where previous strikes had failed.
This time—
It bled.
The Tyrant reacted violently, its Rage Escalation triggering as the damage began to stack, its movements becoming faster and more aggressive.
Jack adjusted.
He didn’t meet it directly again.
Another Blood Bolt shifted its approach.
A step to the side avoided the next charge.
The follow-up strike landed on the same wound.
Bleed stacked.
The fight changed.
Not easier.
But controlled.
Jack felt the rhythm settle again, even as his body protested every movement, the damage still severe, his breathing uneven, his strength fading faster than it should have.
He stepped in too close.
The Tyrant hit him again.
This time something cracked.
He dropped to one knee, blood hitting the ground in a steady stream.
The Tyrant moved to finish it.
Jack reacted instantly.
“Blood Bolt.”
Point blank.
The impact staggered it.
Just enough.
He forced himself up.
“Blood Scythe.”
The final strike landed deep, cutting through the weakened section where the bleed had already compromised its defense.
The Tyrant stopped.
Then collapsed.

[Major Experience Gained: 3,500 EXP]
[Level Progression Updated]
Jack remained where he was, his body struggling to stay upright as the battlefield slowly came back into focus around him, the line still holding, the Sisters still fighting the remnants of the wave, and Hanna already moving to stabilize what remained.
He took a step.
Then another.
And had to catch himself before he fell.
