For the last few days, there had always been movement outside Sanguina. Small groups of beasts passing through, distant sounds in the trees, something shifting just beyond sight. It wasn’t constant, but it was regular enough that its absence stood out.
Now—
Nothing.
Jack stood near the outer edge of the territory, his attention fixed on the treeline.
No scattered movement.
No strays.
Everything had pulled back.
Behind him, Sanguina continued as it had been.
Training. Building. People talking without dropping their voices the moment someone moved nearby. It had started to function on its own.
That made the silence worse.
“Still nothing?” Hanna asked as she walked up beside him.
Jack shook his head.
“No movement.”
She scanned the trees.
“That’s not better.”
“No.”
A short pause.
Behind them, someone stumbled again during training.
Hanna didn’t turn.
“Fix it.”
“I am fixing it.”
“Do it faster.”
“…Working on it.”
Jack let out a quiet breath.
Then—
The system activated.

Jack’s focus sharpened immediately.

[Target: Sanguina]
Hanna stilled beside him.
“…Yeah, that tracks.”
Jack didn’t answer.

The interface expanded.
Clear. Structured.
Objective:
- Survive all incoming waves
- Prevent breach of core territory
- Core zone compromised
- Population loss exceeds threshold
A second layer followed.

Jack read it once.
Then again.
That last reward mattered.
A flat increase across everything.
Strength. Agility. Endurance. The rest.
It wasn’t situational.
It was permanent.
Hanna glanced at him.
“Good or bad?”
Jack exhaled slightly.
“Both.”
She nodded once.
“Yeah. That sounds about right.”
The timer appeared.

Twenty-seven minutes.
Jack closed the interface.
Behind him, Sanguina kept moving.
For a moment.
Then people noticed him turning.
“Everyone listen,” he said.
It wasn’t loud.
But it carried.
Movement slowed.
Hanna stepped forward immediately.
“Focus.”
That locked it in.
Jack looked over them.
Fighters. Civilians. Builders.
Still mixed.
Not anymore.
“We have incoming,” he said. “Large group. Multiple waves.”
Tension spread.
Not panic.
Hanna moved first.
“Sisters, with me.”
They responded immediately.
Adelaide stepped forward.
“How long?”
“Twenty-seven minutes.”
She nodded.
“Alright.”
Then turned.
“Non-combatants, this way,” she said, already moving toward the inner area near the Cathedral.
People followed.
Faster than before.
Tomas stepped forward.
“What do you need?”
Jack didn’t hesitate.
“Reinforce outer edges. Anything that slows movement.”
Tomas nodded once.
“Got it.”
He turned immediately, already calling others over.
Eli raised a hand.
“What if they come from multiple sides?”
“They will,” Jack said.
Eli blinked.
“…Okay.”
Then moved anyway.
Jack stepped forward slightly, letting his awareness push outward again.
Still nothing.
Which meant they were coming together.
Hanna returned to his side briefly.
“They’ll hold a line,” she said. “Not perfect, but enough.”
Jack nodded.
“We don’t need perfect.”
Adelaide passed behind them, already assigning people.
“If someone goes down, they come straight to me. No waiting.”
A few nodded immediately.
“No guessing,” she added. “If you’re unsure, you send them anyway.”
That stuck.
Jack watched it all for a moment.
The movement. The adjustments. The way people were already shifting into roles without needing to be told twice.
It wasn’t clean.
But it worked.
The timer ticked down quietly.
