Empire of Blood

Chapter 47 – Making Something Useful

By the next day, Sanguina had started to sound different.

Not louder, not chaotic, but active in a way that hadn’t been there before. There were more small noises now—stone shifting against stone, wood being dragged across the ground, quiet conversations that didn’t immediately stop when someone else walked past.

It wasn’t a lot.

But it was steady.

Jack stood near the central area again, watching as people moved through the space he and Hanna had shaped over the last few days.

The paths were holding.

That was the first thing he noticed.

People weren’t cutting across uneven ground anymore unless they had to. They followed the flattened strips naturally, even adjusting their movement slightly when others were coming the opposite way.

It wasn’t efficient yet.

But it was consistent.

His attention shifted toward the edge of the central space.

A small group had gathered around what used to be nothing more than scattered debris. Now it was… something else.

Not quite a structure.

But close enough.

One of them had taken pieces of wood and wedged them into the ground at slight angles, creating a rough frame. Another was stacking stones against it, filling gaps, testing what would hold and what wouldn’t.

A third just stood there, holding a piece of wood and turning it in his hands like he was waiting for instructions that weren’t coming.

Jack watched for a moment.

They weren’t being told what to do.

They were figuring it out.

That was new.

He stepped closer.

“What are you building?” he asked.

The man holding the wood looked up.

“…Not sure yet.”

Another one answered instead.

“Something to keep things together,” she said, nudging a loose stone into place with her foot. “Storage, maybe.”

Jack nodded slightly.

That tracked.

“You’ll want it off the ground,” he said.

They all looked at him.

“Why?” the first man asked.

Jack pointed at the ground.

“Moisture. Movement. Things crawl.”

A short pause.

“…Right,” the man said, immediately adjusting how he was holding the wood.

The third one finally spoke.

“So… less ‘pile’ and more ‘not pile’?”

Jack glanced at him.

“…Yeah.”

“That helps,” the man said, like that had clarified everything.

It hadn’t.

But it was enough to get them moving.

Jack stepped back again, letting them continue.

He opened the system.

[System Shop — Territory Management]

He didn’t go straight to terrain shaping this time.

Instead, he looked at the locked options again.

[District Designation — Locked]

Requirement: Additional Development

Still locked.

He frowned slightly.

They were already doing this.

Just not formally.

His gaze shifted back to the group.

They had adjusted the frame slightly, raising it off the ground using stones instead of placing it directly on the dirt. It wasn’t stable yet, but it was better than before.

So the system doesn’t lead this.

It follows it.

That made more sense.

Behind him, Hanna’s voice cut in.

“You’re thinking too much again.”

Jack didn’t turn.

“Testing something.”

She stepped up beside him, looking at the same group.

“They’re building,” she said.

“Yeah.”

“That’s enough.”

Jack nodded slightly.

“For now.”

She glanced at him.

“You want more than that.”

He didn’t answer immediately.

Because she wasn’t wrong.

More structure meant more efficiency.

More efficiency meant better use of gold.

Better use of gold meant faster growth.

But forcing it too early—

Wouldn’t work.

“They’ll get there,” Hanna said, like she had followed that entire chain without him saying anything.

Jack glanced at her.

“Hopefully faster than we are.”

That got a small reaction out of her.

“Speak for yourself,” she said. “I’m doing fine.”

Jack looked at the training area.

One of the women nearly hit herself in the leg with a stone.

“…Yeah,” he said. “Looks smooth.”

Hanna followed his gaze.

The woman froze for a second, then slowly lowered the stone like pretending it hadn’t just happened.

“…It’s progress,” Hanna said.

“Sure.”

They stood there for a moment longer.

Jack shifted his attention again, this time outward.

If gold controlled shaping—

Then gold controlled growth.

That meant:

  • more dungeons

  • more bosses

  • more risk

Not yet.

He looked back at the central space.

At the people.

At the half-built frame that was slowly turning into something usable.

They weren’t ready for expansion.

Not properly.

But they were getting closer.

And for now—

That was enough to keep building on.
