Empire of Blood

Chapter 39 – After the Break

The moment George died, the building changed.

It wasn’t gradual. The pressure that had been sitting in Jack’s head, dulling his thoughts and dragging at his movements, simply vanished. One second it was there, pressing in from every direction, and the next—

Nothing.

Jack stood still for a moment, breathing slowly as his body caught up.

Now the strain hit properly.

His muscles ached from forcing Sanguine Surge past its previous limits. Blood Draw had kept him standing, but it hadn’t erased the cost. He could feel where he’d lost blood, where his body had been pushed too far and only barely held together by the system.

Still functional.

Still stable.

That was enough.

The system surged.

[You have defeated: George (Lv.15)]

Jack let out a slow breath and opened his status without thinking.

[STATUS]

Level: 22

Strength: 25

Endurance: 34

Intelligence: 18

Wisdom: 19

Willpower: 24

Perception: 24

Vitality: 31

Luck: 10 (Locked)

Free Points: 6

He didn’t overthink it.

That fight had made the priorities obvious.

Endurance had kept him moving. Vitality had kept him alive. Willpower had stopped George from ending the fight before it even started.

He made the decision quickly.

+3 Endurance

+2 Vitality

+1 Willpower

The change settled immediately.

His breathing evened out slightly. The lingering strain dulled. The mental clarity sharpened just a bit more, like something that had been resisting him before was now easier to push through.

Better.

Still not full.

But ready.

He closed the interface.

Behind him, Hanna had already moved.

She didn’t even look at George.

Jack followed her.

The back room door opened fully this time.

They were there.

His mother saw him first.

The reaction was slow, like her mind needed time to catch up to what her eyes were telling her. His sister didn’t hesitate. She moved immediately, closing the distance like she didn’t trust the moment to last.

“Jack…?”

He nodded once.

That was enough.

They grabbed onto him at the same time, his mother holding his arm, his sister stepping in closer, both of them grounding themselves in something real for the first time in who knew how long.

Jack didn’t say anything right away.

He just stood there.

They’re alive.

That was all that mattered.

He pulled back slightly after a moment, just enough to look at them properly.

“You good?”

It wasn’t a perfect question.

But it was the only one that mattered.

His mother nodded quickly. His sister hesitated, then nodded as well.

“We’re okay,” she said.

Jack didn’t push further.

Not now.

Behind them, the rest of the room slowly came into focus.

More women.

Watching.

Waiting.

Not broken.

But not free yet either.

Hanna stepped forward.

She didn’t soften it.

“He’s dead.”

The words landed clean.

No buildup.

No hesitation.

A few flinched.

One of them looked toward the door like she expected him to walk back in and prove it wrong.

He didn’t.

Hanna held their attention.

“No one here controls you anymore.”

Silence followed.

Not empty.

Heavy.

Waiting for something to prove her wrong.

One of them stood slowly.

“…You’re serious?”

“Yes.”

No hesitation.

No doubt.

That mattered more than anything else.

Hanna stepped closer instead of waiting.

“You don’t need permission anymore,” she said. “Not from him. Not from anyone.”

Her tone wasn’t soft.

It was steady.

Grounded.

Real.

Something shifted.

Not all at once.

But enough.

One straightened.

Another looked up.

Another took a step forward, then stopped like she was testing whether something would stop her.

Nothing did.

Jack watched quietly.

He didn’t step in.

Didn’t interrupt.

This wasn’t his part.

The system pulsed again.

[Achievement Unlocked: Break the Chain]

→ Destroy a Human-Controlled Territory

→ Free Captured Survivors

[Title Acquired: Liberator]

Then—

Something deeper.

[Rank Upgrade]

→ Noble of Sanguina

Jack felt it settle.

Not physical.

Not visible.

But real.

Like the system had shifted how it saw him.

Not just someone surviving.

Someone in control.

Hanna stood.

The women were looking at her now.

Not with fear.

With attention.

She looked back at Jack.

“We’re not leaving them.”

Not a question.

Jack shook his head.

“No.”

That was enough.

She turned back.

This time, her voice carried something new.

“You don’t have to stay like this,” she said. “Not here. Not ever again.”

A pause.

Then—

“You can stand.”

The first one did.

Slow.

Unsteady.

But standing.

Then another.

Then another…
