Chapter 29 – Controlled Movement
They did not rush.
The direction was already set, and pushing faster would not change the distance in any meaningful way. Jack kept a steady pace instead, one that allowed him to maintain awareness without forcing constant adjustments. The trail remained clear beneath their feet, but he no longer relied on it alone. Blood Sense extended ahead in a controlled spread, mapping movement before it entered their immediate range.
The signals were more frequent now.
Not clustered like the group they were moving toward, but scattered along the path in a way that suggested the area had not been left untouched. Creatures moved through it, drawn by whatever changes the system had imposed, but they did not dominate it.
That balance mattered.
It meant this territory wasn’t empty.
It was contested.
Jack adjusted his path slightly as one of the closer signals shifted toward them, angling his approach so that the encounter would happen on his terms rather than theirs.
Behind him, Hanna followed without needing instruction.
The creature emerged from the trees ahead with little warning, its movement faster than the ones they had encountered earlier, but no more controlled.
“Identify.”
[Feral Stalker — Lv.10]
Type: Predator
Traits: Fast, coordinated strikes
It circled once instead of lunging immediately, its posture lower, more deliberate.
Jack stepped forward.
Sanguine Surge activated.
The shift settled over him cleanly, his perception tightening as the creature’s movement slowed into something readable. It committed a moment later, its body snapping forward in a direct line toward him.
Jack didn’t retreat.
He moved into it.
The scythe cut across its path rather than meeting it head-on, the blade catching along its side and redirecting the momentum just enough to throw it off balance. The creature hit the ground at an angle, its recovery slowed by the disruption.
Jack followed immediately, stepping through and ending it before it could regain its footing.

He let Sanguine Surge fade as the body settled.
No strain.
No wasted motion.
Jack stepped forward again without pausing, continuing along the path as if the encounter had been nothing more than a minor interruption.
Behind him, Hanna closed the distance slightly.
“You always do that?” she asked.
Jack didn’t look back.
“Do what.”
“Finish things before they start.”
He considered that briefly.
“It’s easier.”
She let out a quiet breath that might have been a laugh.
“Right.”
The next signal came from the side, moving toward them at a slower pace.
Jack adjusted again, this time not stepping directly into it, but angling slightly to create space.
“Take it,” he said.
Hanna didn’t hesitate.
She moved past him with a smooth shift in pace, her posture lowering as she brought her weapon up. The creature broke through the tree line a second later, smaller than the last, but quicker in its initial movement.
“Identify.”
[Scrapling — Lv.8]
Type: Scavenger
Traits: Erratic movement
It lunged toward her.
Hanna didn’t meet it directly. She stepped to the side instead, letting its momentum carry it past her before striking across its flank. The hit wasn’t clean enough to end it immediately, but it disrupted its movement enough to create space.
The creature turned sharply, trying to re-engage.
She adjusted her footing and struck again, this time placing the hit more precisely.
The structure failed.
The creature collapsed.

Hanna exhaled once, steadying herself before lowering her weapon slightly.
Jack watched without commenting, his attention shifting briefly between her and the surrounding area.
Not clean.
But controlled.
She looked back at him.
“That good enough?”
“For now.”
There was no criticism in the answer.
Just evaluation.
She nodded once and stepped back into position behind him.
They continued forward, the rhythm settling more naturally between them now. Jack handled the approach, the positioning, the decision of when to engage or avoid. Hanna followed that structure without needing it explained, stepping in when directed and holding back when necessary.
Another pair of creatures crossed their path later, both lower level, both aggressive in the same predictable way as before.
This time, Jack didn’t activate Sanguine Surge.
He didn’t need to.
The first fell to a single clean strike, the scythe cutting through its forward motion without resistance. The second tried to adjust, circling slightly before committing, but the outcome didn’t change.
Jack ended it just as cleanly.

He stepped past them without breaking stride.
The fights weren’t getting harder.
He was getting more efficient.
That difference showed in how little effort they required.
The terrain began to open slightly ahead, the density of trees thinning just enough to allow longer sightlines between them. The path widened, not formally, but in a way that suggested repeated use over time.
Jack slowed slightly.
Not to stop.
To observe.
The signals ahead shifted.
Not creatures.
Not scattered.
Clustered.
More than before.
Human.
He exhaled slowly, his grip on the scythe settling as his awareness extended further.
They were getting closer.
Hanna stepped up slightly beside him this time instead of staying behind.
“That’s them, isn’t it.”
Jack didn’t answer immediately.
He didn’t need to.
“…Yeah.”
The word settled between them.
They continued forward.
The distance was closing.
And whatever waited at the end of it—
Was no longer far enough away to ignore.
