Empire of Blood

Chapter 27 – Human Experience

Jack closed the distance without breaking stride.

By the time the scene came fully into view, there was nothing left to interpret. Three men had formed a loose circle around a single figure on the ground, their posture relaxed in a way that only came from confidence without consequence. None of them were watching their surroundings. None of them expected interruption.

That mistake ended them.

Sanguine Surge activated.

The shift settled over him cleanly, his perception tightening as movement and intent aligned. The first man turned at the sound of his approach, awareness only just beginning to register across his face before the scythe reached him. The blade cut through him in a smooth, controlled motion, ending him instantly and carrying Jack forward without pause.

The second tried to react, his body turning too late as his hand moved toward something at his side. Jack stepped into the space the first had occupied and redirected the arc of his weapon without hesitation. The strike came lower this time, precise and deliberate, breaking the man’s structure before he could form any real resistance.

The third stumbled back, whatever confidence had been there seconds earlier collapsing into shock. His footing failed him as he tried to retreat, his attention snapping between Jack and the bodies on the ground as if he still hadn’t processed how quickly everything had changed.

“Wait—”

Jack did not slow.

He closed the remaining distance and ended it in a single motion.

The silence that followed did not fall all at once, but settled in layers as the movement left the space. The tension that had defined the moment dissipated gradually, replaced by something steadier, something that no longer demanded immediate action.

Jack let Sanguine Surge fade, his breathing remaining even as the system responded.

The notifications appeared one after the other, no different from any other fight he had taken.

No distinction.

No hesitation.

No warning.

Jack’s gaze lingered on the lines for a moment longer than necessary before he let the interface close.

The system didn’t care.

Not about what they were.

Not about what they had been doing.

Experience was experience.

The same as monsters.

The same as anything else.

The thought settled quickly, not because it didn’t carry weight, but because there was nothing unclear about it. He looked down briefly at the bodies, his expression unchanged as the conclusion aligned without resistance.

They had made their choice.

And the system had responded accordingly.

Jack shifted his attention away from them and toward the ground.

She was still there.

Alive.

Moving.

He didn’t step closer immediately, giving her space instead of crowding her as she pushed herself up. Her movements were unsteady at first, but they stabilized quickly, the tension in her posture controlled rather than overwhelming. Her breathing was uneven, but her eyes—

Clear.

Focused.

Present.

She looked at him, not with panic or confusion, but with a sharp awareness that cut through everything else that had just happened.

“You’re not with them.”

It wasn’t framed as a question.

Jack shook his head once.

“No.”

She held his gaze for a moment longer, as if confirming that for herself, then shifted her attention briefly to the bodies before returning it to him.

“…Good.”

She rose fully to her feet without asking for help, steadying herself after a slight imbalance. Jack didn’t move to assist her.

She didn’t need it.

“Are you injured?” he asked.

Her expression tightened briefly as she assessed herself, more focused than reactive.

“Nothing that matters.”

That was enough.

She wasn’t broken.

She wasn’t dependent.

She was still thinking.

Still evaluating.

Jack nodded once, then glanced briefly toward the direction he had come from before returning his attention to her.

“Where are they taking people?”

The question came without hesitation, direct and without unnecessary framing.

Her expression shifted slightly at that, something sharper settling behind her eyes.

“You’ve seen it too.”

Again, not a question.

Jack didn’t respond.

She exhaled slowly, steadying her breathing as she continued.

“Groups moving through the area. Taking anyone they find. It’s organized.” Her gaze flicked toward the road and then back. “Not random.”

That matched everything he had seen.

“Where.”

There was a brief pause, not from uncertainty, but from consideration.

“…Boiling Springs.”

The name settled into place.

Jack’s expression didn’t change.

“Who’s in charge.”

“Mayor,” she said, her tone flattening slightly. “George. He was running things before. Now he’s just…” She didn’t finish the sentence, but she didn’t need to.

Jack nodded once.

That was enough.

Direction confirmed.

A moment passed between them, not empty, but measured.

She studied him again, her attention more focused now, less reactive, as if reassessing him with the immediate threat removed.

“You’re heading there.”

Jack met her gaze.

“…Yeah.”

She held that for a second, then gave a small, decisive nod.

“Then I’m coming with you.”

There was no hesitation in the statement, no attempt to frame it as a request.

It was a decision.

Jack considered it briefly.

She was steady.

Aware.

Not a liability.

That was enough.

He turned.

She followed.

Behind them, the bodies remained where they had fallen, already irrelevant.

The system had moved on.

And so had he.
