Another week passed.
Could Ellis say that many things happened during it?
Not really.
But did he come to understand many things?
Yes.
Two particular events occurred, after all. And perhaps they could even be combined with his growing understanding and counted as one.
It happened while he was concentrating, trying to enter that elusive state of a clear mind. At that moment, Silas, the new maid, who had been away for a while, finally returned.
Her expression was downcast.
As always, she greeted him formally and humbly. But this time, after the usual pleasantries... or at least what he assumed her words to be, she delivered some news.
Of course, he still didn't understand her words.
But when she repeated herself a few times and pointed her small, dainty finger at him, he finally grasped what she was trying to convey.
