Chapter 45: Claim the Lock
The offer brightened when Jace did not answer.
HEIR'S CLAIM
Target: Sunchain Vault.
Attached Human Asset Layer: 412.
Claiming structure will transfer attached assets to claimant authority. Ownership categories will finalize automatically. Accept Vault Claim?
Jace checked the wording twice before he accepted the lock. The people stayed outside the claim. The door, the restraint network, and the release mechanism did not. It was the cleanest use of authority he had found because the thing being controlled could not resent him for controlling it.
Seal Progress: 21%.
Time Remaining: 00:04:58.
Lucas planted the broken chamber frame against the floor. "Take it."
Sophia kept one hand against the woman behind the cracked glass. "Do not."
"If he owns the vault, the transfer stops."
"If he owns the vault, everyone inside changes owners."
"They stay alive."
"So did we before."
The remote Collectors sharpened inside the gold wall. Their mirrored masks gained depth as the extraction seal approached physical arrival. Noah stepped between Lucas and Sophia.
"The menu wants us fighting about which cage has the better lock," he said. "Stop helping it."
Lucas's voice went flat. "You have a Free Claim. Easy speech from the one already protected."
Noah looked at the line connecting him to Jace. "Every breath still hurts him."
Jace felt the next cycle answer.
FREE CLAIM MAINTENANCE
Health: 8/420 -> 7/420.
Charge: 0/140.
Lucas watched the number change.
His grip loosened slightly. Not trust. New information. The extraction seal advanced.
Seal Progress: 27%.
Active Transfer Routes: 61/412.
The nearer Collector raised one hand.
"Local claimant, ownership transfer is the only recognized method of preserving this inventory."
"Inventory keeps talking back," Jace said.
"Instability often produces speech."
Sophia's patient struck the glass once with two fingers. The movement was weak and deliberate.
Sophia looked at the Collector. "Was that instability?"
The mask reflected her without answering. Jace closed the vault claim and cycled Heir's Claim through the remaining structures.
Stolen story; please report.
VAULT LOCK.
TRANSFER NETWORK.
CONTAINMENT AUTHORITY.
HUMAN ASSET LAYER.
The Vault Lock carried every chamber seal, extraction gate, and preservation release. It also carried a chain of ownership clauses reaching into all four hundred twelve records.
TARGET ANALYSIS: VAULT LOCK
Structure Class: Sunchain Containment Core.
Integrity: 100%.
Authority Source: House Sunchain.
Attached Persons: 412.
Attached Ownership Records: 412.
Extraction State: ACTIVE.
Local Access: Sunchain Vault Key.
Claim Risk: Attached ownership inheritance.
Hidden Function: Release authorization.
"That one," Jace said.
Seraphina read the scan. "The lock still carries the people."
"Then we remove them from the lock."
"The lock may interpret removal as release."
"That is the plan."
"It may interpret removal as deletion."
"Less plan."
The System offered a cleaner route.
TRANSFER ATTACHED RECORDS TO CLAIMANT?
Survival Probability: 99%.
Refuse Transfer?
Survival Probability: 38%.
Lucas pointed at the first number. "Ninety-nine."
Sophia did not turn. "For their bodies."
"That is where survival usually starts."
"And where Sunchain stopped."
Lucas stepped closer to Jace. "I remember waking between transfers. I remember hearing people disappear because some claimant wanted a perfect answer. Take the ugly answer that leaves them breathing."
Jace understood him. Lucas was not hungry for a new owner. He was tired of watching delay become death. The System had made urgency its strongest attorney.
"How long would you let me own you?" Jace asked.
Lucas's face hardened.
"Long enough to get out."
"And if the menu says release makes you unstable?"
"Then I fight you."
"Good. I would rather skip to that part."
Jace pressed the attuned Sunchain Vault Key against the lock field.
LOCAL MAINTENANCE ACCESS CONFIRMED.
Permitted actions:
Repair.
Transfer.
Seal.
Reclassify attached assets.
He opened Breach Sight beneath the permitted list. A fifth action appeared in damaged text. Detach expired ownership records.
Eligibility: Owner deceased / claim abandoned / authority invalid.
House Sunchain was not dead. The claim was not abandoned. But the local authority had failed when Caleb died, Theodore fell, and the vault accepted the Anchor Room. Three conditions overlapped without matching cleanly.
BREACH SIGHT
Ownership Chain Integrity: 100%.
Local Authority Integrity: 46%.
Remote Authority Integrity: 83%.
Contradiction detected.
Breach Sight Proficiency: 48% -> 52%.
Jace placed Error Mark on the sentence defining every person as attached property.
ERROR MARK: PLACED
Target: Human Asset Attachment Clause.
Integrity: 100% -> 72%.
Cost Routing: Claimant body.
Health: 7/420 -> 5/420.
Error Mark Proficiency: +8 points.
The lock screamed through every chamber.
Seal Progress: 31%.
Active Transfer Routes: 88/412.
Sophia's patient convulsed behind the glass.
Lucas lifted the frame toward Jace. "If this kills them-"
"You will fight me. Established."
Seraphina opened the Anchor Room channel. "Route the fracture into the structure. Not his body."
ANCHOR NETWORK
Territory Stability: 57%.
Vault Integrity: 68%.
Structural backlash acceptance: AVAILABLE.
Warning: Anchor damage may weaken Safe Zone support.
Jace selected it.
RULE FRACTURE
Target: Human Asset Attachment Clause.
Connected Laws:
Preservation Authorization.
Extraction Authority.
Charge Yield Registry.
Fracture all connections?
"No."
The System rejected the partial command. Heir's Claim opened over the lock.
CLAIM TARGET: VAULT LOCK.
Exclude attached persons?
INVALID.
Jace forced the exclusion through the Error Mark.
"Claim the lock," he said. "Nothing breathing."
INPUT NOT RECOGNIZED.
Noah stepped beside him. "Living witness confirms the distinction."
Sophia kept her hand against the chamber. "Second witness."
Lucas looked at the transfer count. Then he lowered the broken frame.
"Third."
WITNESS CONFLICT RECORDED.
Attached-person exclusion: ILLEGAL / SUPPORTED.
Jace triggered Rule Fracture.
Territory Stability: 57% -> 49%.
Vault Integrity: 68% -> 60%.
Corruption Load: 96%. UNCHANGED.
The ownership chain split away from the lock. Four hundred twelve gold lines tore loose without attaching to Jace.
HEIR'S CLAIM
Target: Vault Lock.
Attached Persons: 0.
Claim Type: Contested Structure.
Structure Slot: AVAILABLE.
Accept?
Jace accepted.
VAULT LOCK CLAIMED.
Owner: Jace.
Attached living property: NONE.
Containment Authority: FRACTURED.
Remote Extraction: CANCELING.
The gold walls shattered. The remote Collectors vanished with them. The claimed lock tried once more to populate an owner field for the people behind it.
OWNER REGISTRATION: REQUIRED.
Jace marked the field blank.
OWNER REGISTRATION: FAILED.
PROTECTION ROUTE: ANCHOR ROOM.
Release authorization moved through the vault without a custody transfer. Chamber by chamber, the System recorded the same contradiction. Protected. Living. Unowned.
Every chamber in the vault unlocked at once.
