Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 42: Basement Drive

The designation remained over the room after the rest of the archive dimmed.

Mateo's transit knowledge made Basement Drive worse, not better. The map matched service paths he knew, then continued through walls that had never opened in his lifetime. Human infrastructure had followed the buried system without understanding it.

BASEMENT DRIVE.

Noah read it aloud as if the words might change under pressure. "Storage for what nobody wanted found."

"Or destroyed," Seraphina said.

Jace looked at her.

She did not soften it. "Those are not the same thing."

The records reopened around them in narrow vertical strips. Each strip belonged to a different Earth layer. The newest showed modern Manhattan. Beneath it were cities that used the same ground without sharing its streets, languages, or sky.

EARTH STORAGE INDEX

Primary Use: Bloodline concealment.

Secondary Use: Failed-protocol isolation.

Tertiary Use: Recycle-sector testing.

Current Civilizational Layer: 12.

Prior layers: RESTRICTED.

Reset count: RESTRICTED.

Noah stared at the number.

"Layer twelve," he said. "That means eleven before this."

"It means the registry calls this twelve," Seraphina replied. "Do not mistake an assigned number for an honest count."

Jace opened Breach Sight across the field. The clean number broke into edits.

CURRENT CIVILIZATIONAL LAYER: 12.

Record overwritten: YES.

Previous values detected: 9 / 14 / 6 / 12.

Source authority conflicts: 4.

Breach Sight Proficiency: 39% -> 42%.

"That seems organized," Jace said.

"It means different authorities rewrote the same history," Seraphina said. "Each one changed the count to make its own rule appear first."

Noah turned toward the chambers above them. "Did Sunchain know?"

The Anchor Room answered with a sealed ownership trail.

HOUSE SUNCHAIN ACCESS

Vault installation: Current layer minus 3.

Prior storage access: LIMITED.

Original sector authority: UNKNOWN.

A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

"Sunchain found the basement after someone else built the house," Jace said.

"And then filled it," Noah replied.

The archive offered a bloodline search.

SEARCH PARAMETERS

Known living bloodline.

Known recovered identity.

Known claimant signature.

Available subjects: Jace / Noah Venn.

Noah stepped back from the interface.

"No."

Jace closed his own field too.

Seraphina watched him. "Your bloodline may be the fastest route to the original record."

"Still mine to use."

"I was going to say the same thing."

"Good. Saves time."

Noah looked between them, surprised enough that it showed. Earlier, Seraphina would have treated noble blood as evidence, access, and obligation. Now she stopped before asking. The change was incomplete. It was hers. Jace selected structural comparison instead.

MYTH CONTINUITY SEARCH

Method: Compare surviving names against sealed vault designations.

Consent required: NONE.

Corruption cost: LOW.

"Low by whose standards?" Jace asked.

The archive did not answer. The first match appeared in the eastern chamber index.

VAULT DESIGNATION: DUAT-3.

Current myth residue: Egyptian underworld.

Structural purpose: Identity passage / judgment sorting.

Official cultural link: DENIED.

The next label surfaced farther north.

VAULT DESIGNATION: YOMI-2.

Current myth residue: Land of the dead.

Structural purpose: Preserved-name quarantine.

Official cultural link: DENIED.

Then IRKALLA, XIBALBA, HEL, and names the modern language index could only render as broken symbols. Each one belonged to a chamber wing, transit route, or storage tier older than the city above it.

MYTH-RESIDUE MATCHES

Confirmed labels: 17.

Probable cultural echoes: 43.

Official registry acknowledgments: 0.

Basement Drive Investigation: 31% -> 68%.

Perception Proficiency: 13% -> 18%.

Overflow Experience: 162,200 -> 165,000.

Noah walked to the nearest projected label. DUAT-3 opened around him as a corridor of black stone lined with sleeping figures. One chamber held a person with wings folded beneath their back. Another held a child whose face had been replaced by a gold record seal. The image was residue, not a live feed, but Noah still lowered his voice.

Seraphina folded the projected corridor down to its structural lines. "A name surviving does not prove this Earth lived through the event. Sunchain and the older houses moved records between sectors. The myths may have arrived as cargo."

Noah touched the corner where four anchor lines met beneath the image. "That mark was carved into the street outside my home."

"It appears in hundreds of noble structures."

"Not backward."

The projection rotated. The seal looked ordinary until Breach Sight reversed the oldest layer. Then the four points formed the same broken pattern Jace had seen beneath Manhattan.

STRUCTURAL COMPARISON

Noah Venn memory fragment: 82% match.

Manhattan Primary Node: 96% match.

Noble registry standard: 41% match.

Direction of copying: EARTH STRUCTURE PRECEDES NOBLE STANDARD.

Seraphina went quiet. She had not lost the argument to Noah. She had lost it to the construction history beneath her own laws.

"The houses copied this," she said.

"Then called it theirs," Jace replied.

Noah kept his hand near the backward seal. "My city was not another planet stored here. It was here. Maybe not this version, but this ground."

The room accepted the statement as witness evidence.

UNREGISTERED CONTINUITY TESTIMONY RECORDED

Legal weight: NONE.

Archive relevance: HIGH.

"I remember this corridor."

Seraphina looked over. "From your city?"

"No. From after it."

His hand rose toward the child and stopped short.

"They moved us through places like this between resets. We were told the old world had become unstable. We were told the next one would be cleaner."

"Was it?"

Noah's expression answered before he did.

"I do not remember anyone asking us."

The Free Claim line tightened through the Anchor Room.

FREE CLAIM MAINTENANCE

Anchor-assisted conversion cycle reached.

Health: 10/420 -> 9/420.

Identity Stability: Noah Venn, 45% -> 49%.

The cost bought him four points of stability because remembering the corridor gave his history somewhere to attach. Jace hated that the exchange looked reasonable on a panel.

Seraphina opened a deeper designation trail beneath DUAT-3. "These labels predate the myths."

"Meaning people remembered the names later," Noah said.

"Or someone carried them forward."

The archive highlighted human stories that had survived without official records: chained kings beneath mountains, sleeping gods under cities, rivers separating the living from the dead, worlds destroyed by flood and fire only to begin again. None matched perfectly. All matched enough. A final row of vault labels rose from the oldest visible layer. Several vault labels used names that later became human myths about underworlds, sleeping gods, and chained kings.
