Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 35: The Collector Who Bleeds

"Because the claim has nowhere else to send the cost," Jace said.

The Collector's blood on the floor gave Jace a measurement the panels could not soften. Recovery personnel could be injured, frightened, and wrong. Sunchain authority had always looked inevitable because nobody around Jace had seen it bleed yet.

Noah's next breath proved it.

Health: 54/420 → 53/420.

Before Jace could say more, gold light sealed the hall doors. The blue Safe Zone barrier stopped flickering. It did not strengthen. It simply froze at thirty-two percent, every crack held in place by a second structure spreading over it from outside.

HOUSE SUNCHAIN EMERGENCY JURISDICTION

Civilian barrier support: TEMPORARILY ASSUMED.

Condition: Recovery operation active.

Claimant classification: IDEOLOGICAL CONTAGION.

Forced recovery authorization: APPROVED.

Theodore stood at the center of the hall. Caleb was to his right, one hand raised into the gold field. Elijah stood behind them, face turned toward Noah and the line of pain connecting him to Jace. Seraphina moved between Theodore and the coats where Jace sat.

"The last offer was refused," she said.

"This is not an offer," Caleb replied.

Theodore removed one glove. Black-gold lines covered his palm, branching from the wrist where the loyalty lock had corrected him. They looked less like veins than instructions written into flesh.

"Move Noah away from him," Theodore said.

"No," Jace answered.

"The Free Claim is consuming your Health."

"Still no."

"It will collapse you before it stabilizes him."

"Your concern remains touching."

"It remains sincere."

That was the worst part. Theodore did not need anger to attack. He only needed to believe violence was the final form of care. Breach Sight opened.

Endurance: 91. Intelligence: 84. Perception: 96.

Willpower: LOCKED.

Authority: NOBLE III.

Active Protocol: COMBAT RECOVERY.

Original Identity Fragment: A-REN.

Threat Assessment: OVERWHELMING.

Jace looked at his own zero Charge, zero Stamina, and fifty-three Health. For the first time since the Collectors arrived, Theodore looked exactly as dangerous as his numbers. The gentleness had not vanished; it had narrowed. Every careful word, every warning about survival, every quiet confession now sat behind a body built to enforce the conclusion. Jace understood then that politeness had never been the opposite of violence here. It had only been the part that waited to see whether violence would be necessary.

"Fair fight."

Theodore moved. No warning. No careful approach. One moment he stood beneath the gold lattice; the next his open palm struck Seraphina's raised guard and drove her across the marble. She stayed upright, but only because the wall caught her. Theodore did not follow. His eyes remained on Jace.

COMBAT RECOVERY PROTOCOL ACTIVE

Target Instability: MAPPED.

Pain Response: EXPLOITABLE.

Damaged Limb: RIGHT ARM.

Free Claim Dependency: ACTIVE.

Static Displacement: PREDICTION ENABLED.

"Your body tells the truth before you do," Theodore said.

Jace pushed off the coats. Emma caught his sleeve, then released it when he kept moving. Liam pulled Noah farther from the center without breaking the voluntary party line. The manual bridge expired.

MANUAL TERRITORY BRIDGE: ENDED.

Sunchain barrier support remains active during recovery operation.

Future civilian status: PENDING CUSTODY OUTCOME.

"Convenient," Jace said. "You save them only while trying to take me."

"We preserve what the situation permits."

"The situation keeps sounding suspiciously like you."

Theodore crossed the space again. Jace triggered Static Step. The skill tried to draw Stamina that did not exist.

STATIC STEP: EMERGENCY OVERDRAW

Stamina: 0/160.

Health Cost: 3.

Destination: Five meters left.

Prediction Risk: 82%.

Jace shifted anyway. The hall narrowed to a dark line between two places. He emerged beside a cracked pillar instead of in Theodore's reach.

Health: 53/420 → 50/420.

Static Step Proficiency: 13% → 15%.

Theodore's hand passed through the space Jace had left.

"Missed," Jace said.

"No."

A gold line had appeared on the pillar.

PREDICTED EXIT MARKED.

Theodore pulled one finger toward himself. The mark dragged Jace off balance. He hit the floor on his damaged side.

Health: 50/420 → 48/420.

RIGHT-ARM FUNCTION: 74% → 52%.

Seraphina struck Theodore from behind with a white blade shaped from light. He turned just enough for it to cut his coat instead of his spine. Caleb's field closed around her.

INTERFERENCE RESTRAINT

Claimant privileges: SUSPENDED.

Seraphina tore one hand free. "Jace, stop moving where he expects."

"Excellent advice. Very actionable."

Theodore approached without hurrying. Jace opened Breach Sight wider. Combat Recovery was not reading the future. It was reading damage: which leg carried less weight, which shoulder turned first, where his eyes went before Static Step answered.

PREDICTION SOURCE IDENTIFIED

Pain Memory Library.

Recorded Heir Failures: 18,204.

Theodore's own recovered responses were indexed among them.

Breach Sight Proficiency: 29% → 32%.

"You learned this from people you treated," Jace said.

"From people I failed to treat before they became dangerous."

"You mean they fought back."

"I mean I remember exactly how desperation moves."

Something changed in Theodore's voice. Not pride. Recognition. He had once moved this way. Favored the same injured arm. Looked toward the same exit before deciding whether to run. Recovery had preserved those memories because they made him better at stopping the next person. Jace forced himself upright. Noah's breath tightened the claim line.

Health: 48/420 → 47/420.

Theodore saw it.

"So that is the rhythm," he said.

He stepped toward Noah. Jace used Static Step again.

PREDICTED MOVEMENT WARNING

Likely destination: Protected Person.

Interception Probability: 94%.

He changed direction at the last instant, aiming for Theodore's blind side.

Static Step Proficiency: 15% → 17%.

Theodore changed with him. His hand struck Jace's damaged right arm exactly where the Stability Chain had once closed. Bone shifted.

Health: 47/420 → 42/420.

RIGHT-ARM FUNCTION: 52% → 21%.

Before Jace could fall, black-gold links unfolded from Theodore's palm and wrapped the old chain marks around his wrist.

CHAIN MARK APPLIED

Debuff: Pain Response Linked.

Debuff: Corruption Feedback Exposed.

Theodore pulled.

Every borrowed memory inside Jace pulled back.
