Level 999: The Glitch King

Chapter 31: Don’t Kneel

The chamber opened before anyone trusted the panel. Cold spilled across the floor. The glass lifted in slow sections, each one releasing with a sound like a lock reluctantly admitting it had been wrong. Elijah let go of Theodore's wrist. Theodore looked at the hand that had stopped him, then at Elijah. A loyalty warning flashed beneath both their sleeves and vanished without becoming an order. The heir remained inside.

Jace had expected gratitude. Noah gave him terms instead, then waited for the panel to prove them before moving. The suspicion irritated Jace and reassured him in equal measure.

His bare feet rested on the chamber floor. Frost clung to his hair and shoulders. Nothing held him now except the habit of waiting for permission.

"You can step out," Seraphina said.

He looked at Jace. "Can I?"

"That is usually how doors work."

"I meant without becoming yours."

Jace checked the panel.

CLAIM RESOLUTION: UNSTABLE

Target Classification: NONE.

Ownership Tag: FAILED.

Protection Status: ACTIVE.

Consent Status: Protection accepted. Ownership refused.

Release Authorization: ERROR.

Cost Assignment: PENDING.

"System says no," Jace said.

The heir's mouth moved toward something almost like a smile. "And you?"

"I am getting tired of agreeing with it."

He placed one foot beyond the chamber. The vault reacted.

RULE FRACTURE COMBO: RESOLUTION PHASE

Ownership Requirement: BROKEN.

Preservation Authorization: HELD.

Replacement Owner: NONE.

Contradiction Status: ILLEGAL.

Resolve contradiction?

Restore Ownership / End Protection / Assign Cost Jace selected the third option before the menu could pretend it was not there.

ASSIGN COST TO WHOM?

House Sunchain.

Target.

Claimant.

Theodore read the choices over his shoulder. "House assignment will trigger Command intervention."

"Target assignment puts it back on him."

"Yes."

The heir's second foot remained inside the chamber. "And claimant means you."

"Apparently I have a recognizable face for bad invoices."

Seraphina caught Jace's shoulder as his balance shifted. "You are at one Charge."

"I noticed."

"You have already tied the Safe Zone to your body."

"I noticed that too."

"You cannot keep turning yourself into the unnamed answer whenever the System refuses to make room for one."

Jace looked at the heir, standing half inside a machine that had kept him alive by filing him into pieces. Seraphina was right. That did not make the other options less final.

The heir lowered his eyes. "You do not owe me your body."

"No."

"Then why are you offering it?"

"I am not offering it to you. I am charging the lock for being wrong and letting the bill land where the System already knows my address."

"That is a terrible explanation."

"It has been a long night."

The heir stood there for another second, caught between a chamber that had owned every useful part of him and a man asking him to walk out without promising gratitude, service, or loyalty. Freedom did not look grand from where he stood. It looked like cold feet, weak knees, and no certainty that the next breath would be allowed to count. He had wanted his name first because a name was proof he could leave as someone. Now the door was open before the proof had fully returned, and he had to decide whether being unfinished was enough to begin.

He stepped out.

COST ASSIGNMENT: CLAIMANT.

Health: 69/420 -> 64/420.

Charge: 1/140 -> 0/140.

Corruption Load: 92%. UNCHANGED.

The floor rose toward Jace. Seraphina kept it from reaching him. The heir swayed once, then caught himself against the chamber frame. His body flickered between two conditions, pale and preserved behind invisible glass one instant, solid the next. Color returned to his skin and he stood breathing in the vault.

A sound left him. Not pain. Recognition.

"Noah," he said.

Elijah's head lifted. The name settled through the chamber, and the vault tried to turn it into a field.

SUBJECT NAME: NOAH.

Surname: V _ N N.

Noah closed his eyes. His lips shaped the missing vowel.

"Venn," he said. "Noah Venn."

NAME LAYER RESTORED

Identity Status: SELF-RECOGNIZED.

Registry Status: UNCLAIMED.

Noah said it again, quieter, as if the second time belonged only to him. "Noah Venn."

Elijah looked away. Theodore did not. The System delayed the reward long enough to make its disapproval feel personal.

Seraphina read the final line and closed her eyes once.

Noah did not. "Undo it."

"There is no undo option."

"Then end the protection."

"The chamber will take you back or delete you."

"You do not know that."

"The System does."

"That has not made it right so far."

Theodore stepped away from the emergency control. "The claim is established. Sunchain cannot restore his ownership tag without defeating Jace's protection first."

"Is that your professional opinion?" Jace asked.

"It is my warning."

The maintenance timer began.

00:00:52.

Noah tested his legs. One step. Then another. Each movement looked like something he had once known and was learning from a body that remembered more than the files did. He reached Jace and stopped. The vault had taught him what freedom looked like from below. Recovery staff above him. Claimants in front of him. Gratitude turned into posture before thought could interrupt. Noah lowered himself onto one knee.

Jace was barely standing with Seraphina holding half his weight. He still found enough breath to answer.

"Don't do that."
