Chapter 28: The Last Kindness
The words were worse than anger would have been. Hatred would have made Theodore easier to place. It had edges. It could be answered or returned. What stood across the hall was a man who intended to take Jace apart and felt no cruelty toward him.
Elijah did not ask Jace to forgive the choice he had once made. He only asked him to understand that exhaustion could turn surrender into an honest preference. Jace kept that with him. Consent mattered most when the answer was inconvenient, including when somebody freely chose the thing Jace feared.
"Then what do you feel?" Jace asked.
The loyalty correction faded. Theodore looked at the black-gold lines as if they belonged to a uniform rather than skin.
"Envy," he said.
Elijah's hand returned to his wrist. Caleb's expression did not change.
Theodore continued before the System could stop him. "Your pain still belongs to you. Your fear still produces choices. Corruption hurts because there are parts of you arguing about what should survive. I remember those conditions. I do not remember what they felt like."

"Do not say that," he said.

"No," Jace said. "That sentence is the problem."

Elijah stopped. His face did not close. Theodore watched him, and Jace saw the impossible shape Sunchain had built. Theodore could recognize the cage, explain every bar, and still believe putting someone else inside was the kindest remaining act. His sincerity was not evidence that recovery worked. "It puts survival there," Theodore said. "That is where survival has always been."
Jace looked through the doorway at one hundred eighty-seven people sheltering beneath a field his body could not maintain. Accepting would help them immediately. That fact was not fake, and refusing did not become noble merely because the price disgusted him. Beyond the doorway, someone tightened a blanket around a sleeping child while the barrier flickered overhead. The bargain had put actual lives on the side of surrender.
"What happens to Aren if I accept?" Jace asked.
Theodore's face remained calm.
"The distress associated with it will be removed."
"That is not what I asked."
"It is the only answer recovery permits me to give."
Jace selected the second path.

"You will eventually wish you had accepted."
