Chapter 79: Earning a Silver Ticket for Breaking a her Heart
I followed her out of the apartment, down the quiet hallway, into the elevator.
Neither of us spoke.
The car still sat in the private bay exactly as we had left it, messy, the air inside carrying the unmistakable scent of everything that had happened the night before.
She opened the windows the moment the doors sealed.
The distance we had closed so carefully yesterday now stretched between us like a physical thing.
She didn’t offer small talk. I didn’t try to force any. The hour-long drive to the guild passed in absolute silence, broken only by the low hum of the hover systems and the occasional chime of traffic lanes.
When we finally reached the guild building, Jenna was already in the main lab, reviewing a set of test results on a floating display.
She looked up as we entered.
"You removed your bracelet?"
"Yes," I answered.
Before anything else could be said, Gianna stepped forward, caught her mother’s wrist, and pulled her toward one of the side rooms. I started to follow. Gianna raised a single hand without looking at me.
"...Stay."
The door sealed behind them.
I stood in the lab and listened. Raised voices at first, Gianna’s sharp, Jenna’s lower and steadier. Then the sharp edges faded into something quieter.
Jenna’s tone shifted into the short, careful cadence she used when she was comforting someone. I couldn’t make out the words, only the shape of them.
Was Gianna crying?
Had I made her afraid of me?
The thoughts piled up without mercy.
Should I have kept myself strictly as a support and never invested anything real?
Even if the cost was slowly stopping being myself?
[Yes.]
The system’s reply arrived without warmth.
[Host should know that this isn’t the Earth that operates on the same rules as the previous one.]
[Your vulnerability does not only weaken your own progress. It weakens those around you.]
[You have wasted significant time focusing on a single target when optimal function requires operating across multiple anchors simultaneously.]
I stared at the sealed door.
"What was the Core Absorption about?"
A longer pause than usual.
[...]
[The Succubus class possesses the capacity to drain a compatible target’s core and replicate its foundational structure within the Host.]
I went cold.
The same way Rei’s blood technique had left a temporary echo inside me.
"Why did you do it?"
[Not the System. The Host’s own desire accelerated the process. You were embracing the class as it was designed to function.]
I never wanted that.
"She could have died."
[She would have lived permanently inside your core. As the primary anchor. Exactly as you wanted in that moment.]
What the fuck?
Mira appeared at the edge of my vision, tablet in hand, expression tightly controlled.
She must have been monitoring the signatures from the moment we entered the building.
"Revien. Hand me your bracelet."
I handed it over without looking at her. My eyes stayed fixed on the closed door.
A few minutes later, it opened.
Gianna came out first. Her eyes were red. The sight hit harder than any physical blow I had taken since arriving in this world.
Jenna followed, composed in the way she always was when she had already decided the next three moves.
Her gaze settled on me.
"Did you take the tablet?"
"Yes."
"How many?"
"Only one."
"Take another one. Now."
I didn’t argue. I removed the second tablet from the strip still in my pocket and swallowed it dry. My body remained calm. No sudden shift, no visible change. The numbness around Gianna’s anchor simply stayed where it was.
Gianna looked at me for a long second, then turned to her mother.
"I’m leaving."
She walked past me toward the exit. I matched her pace automatically. Jenna didn’t try to stop me.
"What happened in there?"
"Nothing."
"Where are you going?"
"Work."
I reached out and caught her wrist.
She stopped. The muscles in her arm tensed, but before she could pull away or speak, I forced myself to let go, fingers opening slowly.
"Talk to me."
She turned her head. Her voice, when it came, was quiet and unsteady in a way I had seldom heard from her.
"I... think I need some time to process this. Train by yourself for a week."
"Gia..."
"It’s hard, Rev. Let me be for a few days."
Then she walked away.
I stood in the middle of the corridor and watched her go until the reinforced doors at the end of the hall sealed behind her. The lab felt too large. Mira had disappeared somewhere with the bracelet.
Jenna remained near the observation console, waiting.
A chime sounded in my mind, bright, almost cheerful, completely wrong for the moment.
[Congratulations!]

I stared at the floating text until the letters began to blur.
Sixty. The exact number the quest had demanded. Delivered in the same hour she told me she needed a week away from me. The system had gotten what it wanted. The class had gotten a clean progress spike.
And the woman whose favorability had just crossed the threshold was walking through the guild halls with red eyes because I had tried to hollow out her core while buried inside her.
Jenna’s voice cut through the static.
"Come inside. We need to talk about what actually happened last night, and about the fact that my daughter just asked for distance after her core expanded in a way that should not be possible."
Core expanded?
I dismissed the reward windows without claiming anything and followed her into the side room.
The door sealed.
For a moment the only sound was the low hum of the lab equipment beyond the glass.
Jenna studied me with the same measuring calm she had used the day she first purchased my contract.
"Sit down, Revien."
