Chapter 53: Shut Up with a Five-Second Taste of Non-Contractual Property
"I’m not interested in being claimed by her."
"Then prove it. Keep your distance. When the joint request comes through, we set the terms. Controlled environments. Full monitoring. No unsupervised contact."
She paused.
"And you don’t kiss again unless someone is actively dying."
"Understood."
Gianna’s shoulders loosened a fraction. She glanced around the apartment, then back at me.
"You look tired."
"I am."
"Did you eat?"
"Some of it."
She made a quiet sound that might have been disapproval and moved toward the containers still sitting on the counter.
For a moment the tension in the room shifted into something almost domestic. Almost.
Then she spoke again without turning around.
"Is your skill still active?"
"Which one?"
"The kiss."
I blinked.
"You can feel that?"
"I can sense your mana after we kissed yesterday."
What?
"Don’t think anything of it."
A small, reluctant smile pulled at my mouth.
"Wouldn’t dream of it."
Gianna turned fully, arms still crossed, but the worst of the coldness had faded.
"I’m staying for an hour. You’re going to tell me the rest of the simulation details while I decide whether you’re actually as controlled as the logs claim. After that, I’m leaving. I have early drills tomorrow."
"Yes, Captain."
"Don’t call me that."
"Yes, Gia."
She pointed a finger at me, but there was no real heat behind it.
"Sit. Talk. And if you leave out anything important, I will know."
"Is that all?" I asked.
Gianna looked confused.
"What else?"
"Gia. I kissed someone else. I’ve been feeling guilty all day."
"You did it to win. It’s okay. Why are you explaining it to me?"
Ah.
The classic tough-girl shield.
"Because I want you to get angry. I want you to yell at me. Ask me Why did you kiss her? You’re not supposed to be kissing her. You belong to m—"
Before I could finish teaching her how to scold properly, Gianna pulled me in and shut me up with a kiss.
It was light. Nothing like the devouring, hungry exchange Rei had forced in the side room.
This one was quieter. More deliberate. Possessive in the way of someone who already knew exactly what she wanted and didn’t feel the need to shout about it.
Five seconds passed.
"Did she bite your lips?"
"...Yes."
My hand moved toward her waist. She stopped it with a firm grip on my wrist and pulled back.
"I told you. This means nothing."
Her voice was calm, but her eyes weren’t.
"You want me to be angry? I am. But I’m not going to act like some naive girl who doesn’t know the consequences of being with you."
"Being?"
"Training."
She corrected herself without hesitation.
"Look, Revi. We are sparring partners. If you catch feelings for me in two days, that’s your fault. Not mine."
All I could do was nod.
Because the look in Gianna’s eyes right then was intoxicating in a way that had nothing to do with the system or favorability numbers.
I understood it quickly. She was different. I don’t think I would find whatever this was in anyone else.
I sat.
And for the next hour, under the quiet lights of the apartment, I told her everything, the leeches that had been drawn to her residual blood scent, the three Ironclad Stone Goliaths, the moment Rei had nearly shattered her own core forcing a massive blood greatsword, the desperate Vital Drain Kiss that had saved her from ejection, the mutation, the level jump, and the conversation that followed in the corridor afterward.
Gianna listened without interrupting much. Her expression stayed controlled, but I could see her filing every detail away.
When I reached the part about Rei offering her mother’s guild and then pushing Jenna for joint training, her jaw tightened once and then smoothed out again.
When I finished, she simply nodded once, stood, and headed for the door.
At the threshold, she paused.
"One week," she said.
"Then we deal with Rei. Until then, you focus on control. And on the quest."
"I will."
She left.
The apartment felt larger the moment the door closed. I sat there for a while longer, the new Blood-Forge Restoration trait sitting quietly in my system, the upgraded Vital Drain Kiss ready at a higher efficiency, and nine days still ticking on the Private Tutor quest.
Rei Lawless wanted more.
Gianna wanted proof I wouldn’t give it.
I stared at the closed door for a long moment, then spoke to the empty room.
"Before the training ends, I want us to have our date."
There wasn’t an answer, of course.
She was already gone. But the words settled into the apartment anyway, a promise I intended to keep.
I leaned back against the sofa and closed my eyes.
The taste of two very different kisses still lingered in different ways.
Rei’s had been iron and hunger and the sharp edge of someone trying to take. Gianna’s had been quieter, shorter, and somehow heavier.
She had called it nothing. She had corrected "being" into "training" like the distinction mattered more than the five seconds her mouth had been on mine.
I wasn’t stupid enough to believe either of those statements completely.
The system chimed softly in the back of my mind, as if it could sense the direction of my thoughts.
[Emotional volatility detected.]
[Recommendation: Maintain current trajectory with primary target. Secondary attachments carry elevated risk of destabilization.]
"Shut up."
I stood, cleared the remaining food containers, and spent the next hour running basic chain drills in the living room.
By the time I finally dropped onto the bed, the apartment was fully dark except for the city lights pressing against the windows. Jenna still hadn’t returned. Gianna was gone. The quest timer continued its quiet countdown.
Nine days.
One week until Rei came back with official requests and that same hungry look in her eyes.
And somewhere in the middle of both of those deadlines, I still needed to take Gianna on a proper date, drive-in theater, no crowds, no guild politics, no blood-seeking monsters, and somehow raise a favorability number that refused to move just because I asked it to.
I stared at the ceiling and let out a long breath.
"System."
[Yes?]
"If I fail the quest, does the one-month lockout apply to all forms of contact or just dual cultivation?"
[Primary dual cultivation pathways will be restricted. Standard proximity and combat partnership remain available. Emotional progression will face increased resistance.]
