Chapter 82: Nine Places Finished And Ready For Them
Hanchuan watched Zhiyi verify the final column of the master inventory for the sixth time.
They had returned to Luming Mountain Hotel after completing the Freeze inspections and all six of them stood inside the protected storage level where the first supply transfers had begun days earlier.
Every shelf was full now.
Zhiyi’s master inventory contained nine identical baseline allocations, adjusted only when the disaster required specialized food, equipment or storage.
Each shelter held 3,600 kilograms of rice, 2,400 kilograms of flour, 1,200 kilograms of oats, 1,800 kilograms of pasta and noodles and 1,500 kilograms of dried legumes.
The canned inventory at every property contained 14,400 portions of meat and fish, 21,600 portions of vegetables and 10,800 portions of fruit. Seven hundred and twenty liters of cooking oil had been divided among small containers, while powdered dairy, eggs, sugar, salt, yeast and spices filled another secured section.
Jingwei’s field rations added 2,000 immediately edible meals to each shelter. Those weren’t included in the ordinary four-year food calculation. They existed for evacuation, power failures and periods when cooking became impossible.
Zhiyi checked the numbers against physical scans collected during the nine inspections.
Nothing was missing.
Water couldn’t be stored for ten years in quantities sufficient to support six people through every disaster. Instead, each property contained at least 24,000 liters of emergency drinking water, multiple independent sources and enough replacement filters and purification chemicals to maintain them beyond the assigned four years.
General hygiene supplies included 1,800 rolls of toilet paper, 600 bars of soap, 240 liters of concentrated cleaning products, toothpaste, toothbrushes, razors, laundry supplies and sealed waste-management systems at every location.
Hanchuan’s separate personal inventory didn’t appear on her screen.
Zhiyi didn’t know that the closets, bathrooms and concealed residential storage contained considerably more.
She moved to the medical report.
Qinghe had divided medications according to storage life and expected need. Each shelter contained surgical equipment, diagnostic tools, dental instruments, sterilization systems, nutritional supplements and enough common medication to treat six people without depending upon a functioning pharmacy.
Temperature-sensitive medicine remained inside small independent medical refrigerators.
The residential freezers at the Flood and Freeze shelters were empty and powered down. They wouldn’t waste years of fuel preserving food no one was there to eat.
The three Heat shelters were different.
Luming, the Reservoir Safe House and Xiling were fully powered because any of them might receive the group within days. Hanchuan had stocked their freezers with chocolate pastries, fruit tarts, cakes and every other dessert his staff could package without damaging it.
Zhiyi hadn’t opened any of them.
Perishable food didn’t contribute to her survival calculations, so she verified that the appliances functioned and continued to the next system.
Hanchuan intended to let her discover the contents later.
Shichen completed the property report from the control console. Structurally, all nine sites were finished. Cosmetic work remained in several residential areas, but none of it affected survival or immediate occupation.
Zeyu confirmed that every property had assigned vehicles, repair equipment and at least two usable routes.
Jingwei approved the security systems and sealed entrances.
Qinghe signed the medical inventories.
For the first time since Hanchuan told his friends the world would end, there was nothing left on the master list requiring purchase, construction or installation.
The men reacted to that fact first.
Zeyu leaned back against a shelf with visible satisfaction. "We actually did it."
Shichen looked exhausted, but the tension he’d carried through every inspection finally left his shoulders. Qinghe smiled as he closed the final medical record.
Jingwei offered no celebration. He simply looked at the nine green property indicators and gave one decisive nod.
Hanchuan understood what it meant.
They were ready.
Come Hell and high water, they were ready.
Whether his friends fully believed the Heat would come no longer mattered. They had trusted him enough to prepare as though it would, and that trust had created nine places where all six of them could survive.
Zhiyi remained in front of the display.
Her finger moved over the completed categories without opening any of them. Food. Water. Medicine. Power. Shelter. Transportation. Security.
Every problem had an answer, but she didn’t look relieved.
Hanchuan recognized the stillness settling over her. For weeks, her mind had moved from one unfinished task to another. Now the preparation problem was complete, but the disaster it solved hadn’t begun.
She had reached the space between them.
Nothing needed to be fixed tonight.
Nothing could be done about what came next.
Hanchuan moved behind her and placed both hands around her waist. Zhiyi leaned back against him without taking her eyes from the display.
"You finished it," he told her softly.
"The Heat hasn’t started."
"No. It hasn’t," he agrees softly, kissing the top of her head.
Her hands remained motionless above the tablet. "But there should be another task."
"There isn’t," he assured.
The answer didn’t comfort her, but he wouldn’t invent work merely to fill the wait. Instead, he held her while she adjusted to the absence of a problem she could solve.
After several minutes, Hanchuan turned the display toward the Heat network.
"Luming will be our first Heat shelter," he announced to the others. "We’ll leave in three days to get there before the Heat actually hits."
The Reservoir Safe House provided a separate route and failure zone, but its forested campus exposed more structures above ground.
Xiling offered the strongest buried protection, although its tunnel access made it less flexible during the initial evacuation.
Luming combined the unfinished hotel’s four underground levels, service reservoir, multiple approaches and the protected-core design reproduced throughout the other shelters.
It was the best first home.
Zhiyi reviewed the selection criteria before marking Luming as their planned destination.
The decision closed the final unresolved item.
Nine green property indicators remained on the wall.
Nine shelters held enough food, water, medicine and equipment to support six people through the disasters assigned to them.
The men were happy.
Zhiyi stood safely inside Hanchuan’s arms and felt as though she were waiting between one breath and the next.
Meanwhile, the clock continued to count down.
Four days left until the world ended.
