Hal ascended the stage with a calm and cool demeanor, irritating a few of the onlookers.
The matchmaking had positioned his first match as the main highlight of the opening round, as he was up against the perceived strongest among the preliminary candidates.
It was a setup that could expose Hal if he were a fraud who had used connections to secure a spot in the main tournament.
At the same time, it gave him the chance to prove his competence without killing the excitement of the later matches, since being the strongest among the preliminaries did not mean much compared to the tournament’s true top contenders.
Arriving at the center of the main stage, Hal sized up his opponent, and his opponent did the same.
Wolfe wasn’t so confident that he looked down on him.
However, the slightly shorter young man, dressed in a flashy black and gold wizard robe with his father’s company logo on the back, didn’t look nervous either.
Wolfe’s family was quite wealthy, so his father made the bold decision not to enroll him in the academy and instead placed him under the tutelage of a renowned Master Wizard.
This qualified him for a mana-bound artifact draw from the Arcane Repository, despite not being a student of the Grand Magic Academy.
Their wealth also granted them access to some lesser-known secrets, including how Hal managed to earn his spot and what rank of student he actually was.
Wolfe was certain that Hal was not on the level of the five-star students if he had needed to secure a slot in the tournament through a request.
