Chapter 178: Herbs
Morning sunlight filtered through the dense leaves, warming Lin Feng's face. It felt incredibly comfortable. Afterward, Lin Feng began to survey the terrain of Wo Hu Mountain.
Wo Hu Mountain covered a vast area with extremely complex topography. He was currently on the western side of the great mountain.
There were many caves there. Some were empty deep inside, and in the center of these vacant caverns grew a few wild herbs.
But these herbs weren't valuable. Among them, only a couple of stalks were growing well; the rest mostly looked malnourished. They wouldn't be much use even if he picked them.
Lin Feng's attention shifted to a spot halfway up the mountain where a rock jutted out. On it grew a pure white reishi, as large as his palm. The reishi had faint blue patterns on it; a single glance told him it was a rare and high-quality item.
The reishi was good, but it mattered who was taking it. Lin Feng didn't rush to pick it. His current task was to survey the surroundings for any danger. He hadn't come to Wo Hu Mountain for worldly medicines like this.
Lin Feng walked slowly along the edge of Wo Hu Mountain. As he gradually neared the summit, the oppressive feeling grew stronger, as if some terrifying presence was staring at him from the shadows. This put Lin Feng on high alert, and he didn't dare to relax in the slightest.
Although wild beasts appeared from time to time on Wo Hu Mountain, their strength varied greatly. Most were just ordinary animals. A threat of this level was nothing to Lin Feng, so his pace was unhurried yet completely silent.
Just as Lin Feng had covered some distance, he heard a rustling sound from the grass ahead. The sound was faint, even quieter than a crawling ant, but it couldn't escape his ears.
Lin Feng had heard such a sound more than once before. It was the cry of a wild rabbit. Although their calls were soft, in the silence of the mountain valley, they sounded exceptionally sharp.
Moreover, a silvery-white light was flashing intermittently in the grass. It was this that made Lin Feng's brow relax.
SWOOSH!
With a flicker, Lin Feng's figure appeared above the wild rabbit, coming into its line of sight.
SQUEAK!
Seeing Lin Feng appear, the wild rabbit seemed terrified. It leaped from its spot and bolted into the distance.
Lin Feng smiled faintly. He knew that catching prey required patience, so he unhurriedly followed the rabbit. He was also aware that game like this wasn't plentiful in these mountains.
The rabbit was extremely fast and also quite cunning, veering left one moment and right the next. In no time, it had darted far away.
WHOOSH!
Just as the rabbit was about to escape his perception range, Lin Feng shot forward like an afterimage and stopped right in front of it.
With a flick of his arm, a small pebble he had picked up from somewhere flew out, instantly knocking the rabbit unconscious. Lin Feng picked it up and finally got a good look at it. The sight made the corner of his mouth twitch.
This rabbit was truly plump, its meat looking a full half-circle thicker than that of a common domestic pig. It was chubby and glossy.
'Heh, this will make for some good game.'
This whetted Lin Feng's appetite. He slung the rabbit over his shoulder and continued his advance deeper into Wo Hu Mountain.
「...」
Lin Feng pressed deeper into Wo Hu Mountain. His pace was swift, and in a short while, he had already passed through layer after layer of dense woods.
He encountered many fierce beasts along the way, but Lin Feng didn't engage them. Instead, he went around them, as they weren't worthy of him making a move personally.
He moved quickly, but the journey was somewhat dull and tedious. In Wo Hu Mountain, aside from the occasional fierce raptor, the rest were all ordinary beasts.
In the eyes of an expert like Lin Feng, however, these ordinary beasts couldn't withstand a single blow. He could end a fight instantly with one punch; they didn't even give him a chance to break a sweat.
This gave Lin Feng a sense of boredom. After all, everything was so simple for him that he had grown used to it.
But such days wouldn't last, because he discovered a waterfall in the central part of the mountain range.
The waterfall wasn't enormous, but it split the entire peak in two. Water cascaded down from above, kicking up thousand-foot sprays.
Billows of white mist rose into the air, making the waterfall seem as if it were shrouded in clouds and smoke, blurring the entire sky.
Lin Feng stared, slightly stunned, at the immense, endlessly rushing waterfall. He had never encountered such a sight before. The great cascade battered Wo Hu Mountain, yet it caused no tremors whatsoever.
"This beautiful scenery is quite unexpected."
Lin Feng said with a smile. He had heard before coming that Wo Hu Mountain was a renowned perilous ground. A vista like this certainly lived up to such a name.
But since he was already here, Lin Feng was in no hurry to leave. He took out an ordinary dagger and, humming a little tune, cleaned the rabbit by the riverbank.
Although he was now a Martial Artist at the Peak of Mid-Stage Innate, he had not yet reached the stage of Fasting and still needed to eat.
Getting to eat some game now was a nice treat. The quality of the ingredients wasn't anything special, but its freshness and rarity made up for it.
After a quick rinse, he got a fire going. Lin Feng fashioned a simple rack from wood, skewered the rabbit, and placed it over the flames. It was the most basic method of roasting.
The enticing aroma of the roast meat, combined with its rich, savory scent, left Lin Feng very satisfied. He had fought twice yesterday and hadn't eaten anything since. Today, he finally wouldn't have to go hungry.
He tore off a rabbit leg and began to take large bites. Although the meat was coarse, the flavor was surprisingly good. Lin Feng let out a sigh of satisfaction.
Just then, in a large tree next to Lin Feng, a pair of pea-sized eyes were staring intently at the roasting meat below. The gaze was filled with greed, and drool dripped down from its mouth onto a large, furry face.
A foul, gamey stench wafted over. Lin Feng frowned and turned around. The pair of pea-sized eyes were now glaring viciously at him, filled with both fury and greed. Lin Feng was a little taken aback.
