Chapter 284 282: A Wild Dance on the Blade's Edge
After a short break, the fourth quarter began, picking up where the third had left off. The San Francisco 49ers still had possession.
Under Lu Ke's leadership, they had successfully driven to their opponent's 20-yard line. Michael Vick and his offense had been resurgent, but the San Francisco 49ers answered in kind, showing excellent form. Still, they couldn't let their guard down. Before a Touchdown, anything was possible.
First and ten from the 20-yard line.
Lu Ke found Logan Newman with an accurate five-yard pass. But as soon as Newman made the catch, he was swarmed by three defenders. The ball, not held securely, was knocked loose. Luckily, it wasn't intercepted, so there was no turnover—just an incomplete pass.
The closer they got to the end zone, the tighter the defense. The swarm of three defenders had forcibly slapped the ball right out of Newman's grasp, leaving him furious with himself. For the first time, Newman truly understood that the physical advantages he'd enjoyed in college were gone in the professional league.
But there was no time for frustration. The clock was ticking, and the game was on.
"Focus! Focus!" Lu Ke yelled at Newman, tapping his own helmet.
This was a critical moment in a critical part of the field; the last thing they needed was a lack of focus. In fact, they needed to be more dialed in than ever. Lu Ke quickly waved Newman over, and the offensive players gathered in a huddle.
The noise in Lincoln Financial Field began to swell once more. The home fans' cheering was like fierce waves, a powerful shockwave that relentlessly battered the players on the field, making it impossible for them to hear each other speak.
But after three quarters of this, while they couldn't ignore the noise, they were starting to get used to it. Lu Ke didn't say much. Instead, he used hand signals to accurately relay the coach's play call, then looked up, meeting his teammates' eyes one by one.
No words were necessary. Their firm, burning willpower was communicated through their eyes alone. No one was distracted, no one hesitated. All their sharp, focused gazes locked onto Lu Ke. Lu Ke gave a powerful pump of his right fist to fire them up, then signaled for them to get back to the line of scrimmage.
Still at the 20-yard line, now second and ten.
His focus was absolute, his breathing slow and steady. Lu Ke was calmer than ever, taking in the entire defensive formation before him. He slowly bent his knees in the Shotgun Formation and decisively called for the snap. After securing the ball, he took quick, choppy steps to adjust his position, his chin held high as he scanned for holes in the defense.
The five-man Offense Line squared up against five defenders in a one-on-one battle. The other defensive players dropped back, blanketing the short, mid-range, and Long Pass Areas, tightly covering every potential receiver. With five eligible receivers against six defenders in coverage, the offense was at a numerical disadvantage.
The left side of the field was stacked with defenders. Lu Ke gave it a single glance and dismissed it. To the right, he could see Marcus Lynch and Kyle Williams running their routes.
After the snap, Lynch shot forward and got tangled up with the opposing cornerback. The two of them jostled, pushing and shoving as they drifted toward the right sideline.
Meanwhile, Williams, who had faked an inside cut, slammed on the brakes. The move shook the outside linebacker off balance, and Williams reversed course, running back along his original path. He turned to face Lu Ke and began backpedaling quickly, his hands up, signaling for the ball.
The pocket was shrinking, and fast. The five pass rushers were coming on fiercely. But even as the pocket inevitably constricted, the five offensive linemen were performing brilliantly. In their one-on-one matchups, they locked down their opponents, keeping the pocket from collapsing and maintaining a crucial distance between the defenders and Lu Ke.
Lu Ke quickly raised his right arm. With a swift flick of his wrist, he unleashed a short, violent burst of power, firing a bullet of a pass on a flat trajectory.
The ball tore through the air, seeming to leave a visible wake as it rocketed toward Williams.
But he'd put a little too much heat on it!
Lu Ke's chemistry with Williams wasn't as sharp as it was with Newman. Lu Ke misjudged Williams's backpedaling speed, throwing the ball for a twelve or thirteen-yard gain. In reality, Williams had only retreated eight or nine yards. The timing was way off.
Fortunately, it was a bullet pass thrown perfectly straight; there was no deviation left, right, up, or down. It was still on Williams's line, just thrown a little farther and harder than intended.
Just as the ball was about to fly over his head, Williams leaped into the air. He threw up his right hand like a wall, stopping the ball's forward momentum. Then, using its inertia, he scooped it toward himself and pulled it securely into his chest.
But that slight delay was all the pursuing linebacker needed. He closed in, wrapping his arms around Williams's waist!
"The snap! The San Francisco 49ers' Offense Line is providing incredibly solid pocket protection, giving their quarterback plenty of time to survey the field! But the Philadelphia Eagles have committed more men to their secondary, giving them the advantage in zone coverage. All the receivers are blanketed, there are no openings! We're at a stalemate!"
"Williams, No. 10 for the San Francisco 49ers, uses a sudden stop to shake the Eagles' outside linebacker, No. 57 Clayton! He comes back on his original route—it's not an in-cut, it's a comeback! He's open! Lu Ke sees it! A decisive, crisp pass, and he finds his No. 10 Wide Receiver!"
Kirk's commentary began to pick up speed, his voice growing tense as his eyes locked onto the ball, which shot out like a bullet.
"Oh no, Lu Ke's pass is a little high, a little long! Williams isn't going to get there. But—wow! Incredible! Absolutely incredible! Williams leaps up and snags the ball like he's catching a cannonball, then smoothly pulls it into his body. My God, it was a rocket of a pass, but Williams made the one-handed grab look effortless!"
"Wait, Clayton closes in! He's got Williams by the waist! Williams spins, shaking off the tackle like a slippery eel, then cuts a small arc to the outside! Clayton is still in hot pursuit, trying for a second tackle. Williams weaves around Lynch and Nate Allen, cutting through a seam on the outside! What a close call! He squeezed through!"
Williams was in the zone, his focus absolute. After shaking the first tackle, he spotted a small gap in his peripheral vision. He controlled his footwork, fighting against inertia and gravity as he cut a small arc. He flashed past Lynch and Allen, finding a tiny seam right at the extreme edge of the field.
The seam was impossibly small, like a tightrope!
But Williams didn't hesitate for a second. It was all or nothing. With every muscle in his body tensed to the limit, he felt Clayton dive from behind. Williams arched his back, dodging the sure tackle by a hair's breadth. He immediately dipped his shoulder, scraping past Allen, who had come off Lynch to try and make the play.
Williams could feel Allen's hands graze his helmet and shoulder. The contact wasn't solid, but it sent a rush of air that felt like a slap across the face.
To shake him off, Williams had to lower his center of gravity again. He began to stagger, his downward glance catching the sideline, which was now right at his feet. 'Don't go out! Don't go out! Don't go out!'
Williams went up on his toes as if he were actually dancing on a tightrope. His feet, like those of a ballet dancer, moved rapidly along the sideline. He clutched the ball to his chest with his left hand, his right arm held high for balance. His light, precarious steps seemed to teeter on that tightrope in a howling gale, where one tiny misstep could mean disaster.
Yet, Williams showed no hesitation. He didn't slow down. Instead, he accelerated, accelerated, and accelerated again! Running on the tips of his toes, the feeling of imminent danger was pushed to its peak. He sprinted, kept sprinting, and then he saw it—the end zone. In his peripheral vision, he caught sight of the safety moving in fast to cut him off.
Another burst of speed! He found another gear!
Williams felt every muscle in his body screaming, an endless reserve of explosive power fueling a firework display of adrenaline. He was like a gale-force wind, roaring past. Just before the safety could collide with him, he crossed into the end zone like a sprinter breaking the tape!
"Oh my God, oh my God! Williams is flying down the sideline! His footwork is like an elegant ballerina, tiptoeing along the very edge, teetering, so precarious it looks like a slight breeze could knock him out of bounds! But no, there's nobody there! Williams accelerates again, he's still picking up speed! DEAR GOD! Williams evades the hit from Tom Nelson and gets into the end zone!"
"Jesus Christ! What did we just witness?! What in the world did we just witness?! Touchdown! The San Francisco 49ers score another Touchdown! That was a wild dance on a tightrope! Williams has delivered another absolutely brilliant Touchdown in today's game! The San Francisco 49ers have once again narrowed the score!"
