Chapter 480: The Dwarf
Xiao Ye paid no mind to the chatter behind him as he left the crowd and vanished from sight.
「Soon.」
The local police department was quickly informed of the incident.
The commotion was too great and news was spreading rapidly throughout the country. As a result, they acted with incredible speed.
In just a short hour, Xiao Ye's name was on Country N's local wanted list.
Xiao Ye was now officially a wanted man!
The news quickly reached Dragon Country.
General He didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "That Xiao Ye... always stirring up trouble. Then again, this is just like him."
"Oh, what's the use. I can't just ignore this, can I?" He beckoned to a subordinate. "Go, call Country N. Transfer the call directly to me once you get through."
"Yes, sir!" The subordinate immediately carried out the order.
Just three minutes later, the call came through.
Because of its poverty, Country N was always very accommodating toward major world powers, especially Dragon Country.
Over the past three years, Dragon Country had not only built them railways and high-speed rail lines but had even constructed an airport for them.
On top of that, even their public buses were manufactured by companies from Dragon Country.
To say nothing of the fact that Country N was currently in the process of signing a mutual aid agreement with Dragon Country.
Dragon Country was doing its best to provide Country N with talented personnel and training.
So, the moment the official heard it was General He on the line, his tone became as respectful as if he were speaking to his own father. "General He, to what do we owe the pleasure of your sudden call? Has something happened?"
"That man you put on your wanted list today—take him off. He's one of ours. In fact, he's the one delivering the secret key to you."
"He was dealing with people trying to steal that key. As for how you handle the public outcry, that's your problem."
'If a country can't even manage basic public opinion, maybe its entire leadership needs to be replaced.'
There was a moment of stunned silence on the other end of the line, followed by a profuse apology. "Oh, my goodness, I am so terribly sorry. We had no idea that was the case."
General He sneered. "You 'had no idea'? Or you're just pretending?"
"Don't you people investigate before you act? This is the first time. For the sake of our friendly relationship, I won't press the matter."
With that, he hung up the phone.
The official on the other end listened to the dial tone, his expression turning grim. "Investigate this! Find out who proposed putting him on the wanted list. And find out who was in charge of the background check. How could they not know he was the one delivering the secret key?!"
"He's been hunted this whole time! That means plenty of people knew he had the key, but we were completely in the dark!"
"Yes, sir!"
Not even five minutes after the call ended,
The wanted notice was rescinded.
Country N fudged the details, claiming that Xiao Ye was actually an international police officer and that the man he'd dealt with was a wanted international fugitive they had been investigating.
Meanwhile, as Xiao Ye continued on his way, he once again found himself the target of various assassins.
Xiao Ye pulled over to take a break.
A child selling bottled water ran up to him, looking up with an innocent face. "Sir, would you like to buy some water?"
Xiao Ye looked at him and said coolly, "No, thank you."
"Please, buy one, sir. My family doesn't have much. We depend on the money I make selling water."
"I know you're a dwarf assassin. I'm going to give you two choices," Xiao Ye said, staring at him. "One: I kill you."
"Two: You turn yourself in. Pick one."
The "child" put on a look of confusion. "Sir, what are you talking about?"
'No matter how well you act, you're not a child.'
'A child's eyes are always clear. Even a child born to be wicked has eyes that aren't clouded, because they haven't seen enough of the world. They haven't been worn down.'
'But an adult's are different. So no matter how similar you look on the outside, it's only superficial.'
Realizing he'd been exposed, the assassin didn't hesitate. He pulled a dagger from a hidden compartment in the water bottle and lunged at Xiao Ye.
Xiao Ye raised a hand to block the attack and sent the man flying with a single kick.
The surrounding crowd saw this but didn't understand what was happening.
"Hey, what do you think you're doing? Hitting a little kid! Are you even human?!"
"Don't think you can get away with that just because you're a foreigner!"
"Oh no, the kid is spitting up blood."
Xiao Ye stood up, brushing off his clothes. "I suggest you call the police. That's not a child, it's a dwarf. And he's a killer."
"Bullshit!" an old woman yelled. "Stop spouting nonsense! He's obviously just a child!"
As soon as the words left her mouth, the dwarf scrambled to his feet, grabbed his dagger, and tried to lunge at Xiao Ye again.
This time, everyone was terrified.
Xiao Ye sent the man flying with another kick and turned to leave.
The people who had just been yelling at Xiao Ye felt their faces burn with shame.
"Quick, while he's down, let's tie him up!"
"I've already called the police! We'll wait for them to get here. We can't let him hurt anyone else!"
Xiao Ye walked into a fast-food restaurant.
A waitress approached him. "Sir, what can I get for you?"
The words had barely left her mouth when she launched a flying kick at him.
A blade shot out from the tip of her already-sharp high heel, aimed straight for Xiao Ye's throat!
Xiao Ye caught her by the ankle and slammed her down onto the counter.
The loud crash drew everyone's attention.
"You people are like cockroaches. Popping up all the time. It's so annoying!"
He snapped the woman's leg. "Contact your boss. Tell him if he dares to send anyone else, I'll wipe out his entire operation!"
'They really think a tiger's a housecat if it doesn't roar!'
The woman winced in agony, but her eyes blazed with indignation. She clearly hadn't expected to be defeated so easily.
'She has a pretty face, but her bone structure screams trouble.'
'As if Xiao Ye would fall for that.'
Pinning the woman to the floor with his foot, he looked over at the dumbfounded owner behind the counter. "I'll have the steak combo."
"Easy on the butter for the vegetables and bread."
"O-Okay!"
By the time Xiao Ye finished his meal, the police had come and taken the woman away.
He had just stepped out of the restaurant when several people began closing in on him from all directions.
They looked like ordinary people, but the waves of killing intent coming off them were unmistakable.
Xiao Ye pretended not to notice and kept walking.
As they moved in, he took them down one by one with a single kick each.
"Either send someone competent, or don't send anyone at all! What's the point of sending you lot?"
"A bunch of useless trash. This is a complete waste of my time!"
"Hand over the secret key!" a sharp voice barked.
Immediately after, a man emerged from a nearby alley, holding a child hostage.
Passersby and local residents who heard the shout all turned to look, their faces instantly draining of color.
"A kidnapper!"
"What's happening? How dare he take a hostage in broad daylight!"
"Quick, someone call the police!"
The kidnapper paid no attention to the commotion around him. Holding the tear-streaked child, he advanced on Xiao Ye step by step, a vicious look on his face.
"The key! Hand it over! Or I'll kill him!"
"Aren't you people from Dragon Country supposed to be the kindest? So hurry up and do what I say!"
"This kid's only five years old. Do you really have the heart to watch him die?"
