"Osaka plays differently," Coach Tanigawa said, the Tuesday before the match, Leo-style scouting footage playing on the classroom projector for the whole squad. "Aggressive press. Physical. Less patient than anyone you've faced here so far."
Kai watched the clip twice, something in the intensity of it familiar in a way that surprised him. "This reminds me of Batangas. Back home."
"Who?"
"Old opponent. Direct style. Fast, physical, relentless pressing." He considered the parallel further. "We beat them by slowing the game down. Making them impatient."
Tanigawa nodded slowly. "Good instinct. Same principle should hold here."
---
The away stadium buzzed with an energy unlike any previous match, Osaka's home crowd carrying a passionate, vocal intensity that felt, for the first time since Davao, genuinely loud rather than merely present.
"This is more like it," Kai murmured, taking in the noise from the tunnel.
Ren glanced at him sideways. "You like the noise?"
"Used to it, a little. Different country, same feeling."
---
The whistle blew, and Osaka confirmed the scouting report within the opening minute — a direct ball forward, Ogata chasing it down with real pace, Owada forced into an early recovery challenge that only barely cleared for a corner.
"They don't waste touches," Kaneshiro said, tracking the corner delivery.
"Neither do we, usually," Kai said. "Different kind of not wasting, though."
---
The corner came to nothing, but the pressing continued relentlessly, Osaka's midfield pair of Horiguchi and Daimon closing down every Hoshizora touch within a second of it arriving. In the seventh minute, Mochizuki was forced into a rushed clearance under pressure that gifted possession straight back, Akashi driving forward before Nakada recovered just in time.
Tch. Kai bit back his own frustration, dropping deeper to offer an outlet.
"Drop deeper," Coach Tanigawa called. "Let them come to us! Don't match their pace, break it!"
---
The instruction took several minutes to properly land, Hoshizora's passing growing more patient, more deliberate, refusing to be dragged into the frantic tempo Osaka clearly wanted to impose. By the fifteenth minute, the pressing had cost Osaka something real, Fujiwara visibly tiring after an opening quarter-hour spent chasing shadows rather than the ball.
"It's working," Ren said quietly.
"A little," Kai said. "A little's enough, for now."
---
Osaka nearly punished the shift anyway in the eighteenth minute, Tanabe finding a half-yard of space between Ishikawa and Segawa that shouldn't have existed, curling a shot just wide of Fujimori's near post.
"Stay switched on," Kaneshiro called. "One mistake and they're back in it."
---
Kai's first real involvement came in the twenty-third minute, receiving the ball under immediate pressure from Nishioka, the same delayed patience now second nature rather than a conscious decision. He held it a beat, inviting the challenge, Nishioka committing his full weight toward the outside.
The reversal came clean, explosive, defender left stranded as Kai burst into the space behind him.

Kurosaki recovered at the last second, forcing the shot wide, but the message had been sent — Osaka's aggressive marking carried real risk now every time they overcommitted.
"Getting faster," Ren observed. "The move. Cleaner than Kashiwa Meridian."
"Reps," Kai said, breathless. "Just reps."
---
The breakthrough arrived in the thirty-first minute, patient buildup finally cracking Osaka's relentless press. Doi found Kaneshiro in space, the captain carrying it forward before releasing it wide to Ren, whose own delayed movement drew Nishioka a half-step out of position before the cross arrived low and driven.
Kai met it at the near post, first-time finish, clean and true past Yamauchi's outstretched hand.
GOAL.
---
Hoshizora 1 — 0 Osaka Phoenix. Thirty-first minute.
The away section of the crowd, small but vocal, erupted in response, a noise that felt, for a brief moment, almost like home.
Ren reached him first, grinning through his own exhaustion. "Team effort."
"Team effort," Kai confirmed, the phrase worn smooth enough now between them that it barely needed saying anymore.
---
Osaka responded with renewed urgency, their pressing intensity climbing rather than fading despite the concession. In the thirty-eighth minute, a sharp combination finally broke through Hoshizora's defense, Ogata finishing a low cross first-time before Fujimori could properly set himself.
GOAL.
Hoshizora 1 — 1 Osaka Phoenix. Thirty-eighth minute.
"Reset," Kaneshiro called, steady despite the equalizer. "Same plan. Patient."
---
The half wound toward its close with both sides trading cautious possession, Osaka's intensity finally showing signs of genuine fatigue by the final minutes. The whistle blew with the scoreline level.
Hoshizora 1 — 1 Osaka Phoenix.
---
Walking off, Coach Tanigawa gathered the squad with his usual economy. "Good half. They're tiring faster than they expected to. Keep the tempo patient in the second half. The gap opens wider the longer this goes."
"Understood, Coach."
---
The second half unfolded exactly as predicted, Osaka's pressing intensity dropping noticeably by the hour mark, their once-relentless closing-down arriving a half-second slower with every passing minute.
In the sixty-second minute, Mochizuki intercepted a tired, loose pass at midfield, releasing it quickly to Kai, whose run split the tiring defense clean. Kurosaki recovered, but a half-step later than he would have in the opening minutes.
The shot flew low and true. Yamauchi parried it away, but only just, the save costing visibly more effort than it should have this deep into the match.
"They're cracking," Ren said, tracking back into position. "Keep pushing."
---
The winning goal arrived in the seventy-fourth minute, patient buildup finally rewarded. Kaneshiro found Kai in space, Nishioka's recovery a full stride too slow now, and Kai cut inside with the same explosive movement that had become, over the course of a single season, unmistakably his own.
One touch. He didn't chip this time. He drove it low and hard, inside the far post, before Yamauchi could react.
GOAL.

---
Hoshizora 2 — 1 Osaka Phoenix. Seventy-fourth minute.
Ren tackled him in celebration, both of them nearly toppling over. "Three goals this season. Already."
"Four, counting Kashiwa Meridian twice."
"I know. I'm being generous with the word 'already.' It should feel like more time has passed."
"Feels like it has, some days," Kai admitted, grinning. "Feels like no time at all, other days."
---
Osaka pushed for a late equalizer, their crowd's passionate noise rising again in the match's closing stretch, but Hoshizora's defense held firm, Kai himself making a crucial last-ditch recovery tackle in stoppage time that denied Tanabe a clear sight of goal.
«[DEFENDING: 36 → 39]»
The referee checked his watch. Raised the whistle.
PEEP! PEEP! PEEEEP!
Full time.
Hoshizora Football Academy 2 — 1 Osaka Phoenix FC Academy.
---
Coach Tanigawa allowed himself a rare, fuller expression of approval in the post-match huddle. "Good response, second half. You read their fatigue correctly and exploited it. That is advanced thinking, for a player three months into training here."
"Thank you, Coach."
"Don't thank me. You did the reading yourself. I only confirmed it." A small pause. "Though the instinct to recognize a pressing team from your old country — that detail helped. Football knowledge travels, it seems, even across oceans."
---
That evening, Kai's phone lit up with the usual flood of messages once the time difference finally aligned.
Rafael: FOUR GOALS THIS SEASON?? you're basically Japan's problem now, not ours
Miguel: how's the Brazilian trip planning coming along? heard rumors from Arturo's updates
Kai: still a few weeks out. apparently it's official now. whole academy's going.
Sofia: BRAZIL?? tell me everything the SECOND you land there
Kai: will do. probably going to embarrass myself trying to keep up with actual Brazilian football, honestly.
Miguel: you said that about Japan too. look how that turned out.
Kai: fair point.
He set the phone down, the hiragana notebook nearly full now, a season's worth of hard-won goals and harder-won adjustments sitting steady behind him, and one more unfamiliar horizon — sun, sand, and an entirely different footballing philosophy — waiting just a few weeks further down the road.
---
Ren found him still awake a while later, poking his head into the room without knocking properly first, a habit neither of them had bothered correcting by this point in the season.
"You're smiling at your phone," Ren observed. "Suspicious."
"Good news from home. My friends think the Brazil trip is the funniest thing that's ever happened to me."
"Is it not exciting to you?"
"It's terrifying, honestly," Kai admitted. "Everyone says Brazilian street players move like nothing I've ever seen. I don't even know how to prepare for something like that."
"You didn't know how to prepare for me either," Ren said, matter-of-fact. "Look how that turned out."
"That's annoyingly fair."
"I'm usually fair. Occasionally annoying. Both things can coexist." Ren tossed a ball lightly between his hands, considering something further. "Maybe don't prepare, this time. Maybe just watch first. Let the new thing teach you what it wants to teach you, instead of deciding in advance."
Kai turned that over, something in it settling easily alongside everything else the season had slowly taught him. "That's actually good advice."
"I have those occasionally too," Ren said, already heading back toward his own room. "Sleep. Big month ahead."
