The whistle blew, and Tuguegarao East didn't start where anyone expected.
Salcedo dropped deep almost immediately, nearly level with his own back four, and for a confused half-second San Isidro's midfield didn't know who to follow.
"That's not the formation we scouted," Leo said from the bench, already flipping to a blank page.
Coach Ramirez didn't answer right away. He was watching too closely to talk.
---
Salcedo received the ball from his own center-back like a deep-lying playmaker instead of an attacking midfielder, and Miguel who'd been briefed to press him high found himself stranded ten meters too far forward, unsure whether to chase or reset.
"Miguel!" Coach shouted. "Hold!"
Too late. Salcedo had already released it, a long diagonal ball that skipped past San Isidro's press entirely and found Kobe running into space on the flank.
Kai turned to track back. Nobody had told him Kobe would be the one running there.
---
The cross came in early, before Jared had fully recovered his position. Fernan rose at the near post no real challenge on him, the defense still reorganizing from the surprise switch and the header went down, hard, past Enzo's outstretched glove.
GOAL.
Fourth minute.
The Tuguegarao East end of the stadium erupted, maroon and gold flags rising in a wave. Kai stood near the penalty spot, chest heaving, already replaying the sequence in his head and not liking what he found there.
San Isidro 0 — 1 Tuguegarao East.
---
"They changed the shape," Miguel said, jogging back, disbelief still in his voice. "They actually changed it."
"For us," Kai said. It wasn't a question.
Coach Ramirez called them in during the restart, voice flatter than usual not angry, just recalculating.
"Salcedo's dropping deep to build," he said. "That's not what we prepared for. Miguel, don't chase him into their half. Let him have it there. Protect the space behind you instead."
Rafael, breathing hard, asked the question everyone was thinking. "So who takes Salcedo?"
Coach looked at Tomas. "You track his runs into the box. Not Kai."
Kai blinked. He'd assumed everyone had assumed that matchup would be his. Coach hadn't planned it that way at all.
"Kai," Coach continued, "your job doesn't change. Attack their right side. Enrico's their weaker fullback. Use it."
It wasn't the showdown Kai had pictured on the bus that morning. It wasn't a showdown at all, not directly. He filed the disappointment away somewhere it wouldn't get in the way and nodded.
---
San Isidro tried to respond immediately, but the shock of the goal lingered in their shape for several minutes passes slightly rushed, movement slightly late. Tuguegarao East, energized by the lead and the crowd, pressed with a confidence that hadn't been obvious in Arturo's notes.
"They're better organized than the group stage," Miguel muttered, chasing down a loose ball. "Leon's directing everything."
He wasn't wrong. Their captain barked instructions constantly, small adjustments, tiny shifts in shape that kept San Isidro's attacks funneling into places Tuguegarao East wanted them.
Near the touchline, Belle crouched low with her camera, catching the scoreline on the board behind the goal 0-1, still fresh, still stinging. She didn't raise the camera toward Kai. Not yet. Some moments weren't for photographing.
---
The first real San Isidro chance came in the eleventh minute, and it came from exactly where Coach had pointed Kai driving at Enrico, the weaker fullback, beating him with a sharp change of direction that the defender simply couldn't match. The cross that followed was low and dangerous, but Marco arrived a half-step late, and the ball rolled through to the goalkeeper untouched.
"Closer," Rafael said, jogging past. "We'll get it back."
Kai didn't answer. He was already looking for Enrico again.
Behind the goal, a small section of San Isidro supporters had made the trip after all teachers, a handful of students who'd fundraised their own way to Tuguegarao, holding up a banner that had survived the whole tournament in various states of crookedness. They'd gone quiet after the goal. Kai heard them find their voices again slowly, one chant at a time, as San Isidro started to look less shaken.
---
Tuguegarao East's second chance arrived through a different channel entirely not Salcedo this time, but Kobe again, cutting inside from the flank and forcing Enzo into a full-stretch save that drew a gasp from both sides of the stadium.
"They're using more than one weapon," Leo said, scribbling something. "We can't lock onto just Salcedo."
Coach Ramirez nodded slowly, arms crossed, already adjusting something in his head that hadn't been on the whiteboard the night before.
---
Kai found himself tracking Kobe more than he expected to over the next several minutes, the tactical picture shifting under his feet in real time. Every time he thought he understood the shape of the match, Tuguegarao East offered a new wrinkle Salcedo drifting wide, Zach cutting inside, Leon pushing forward to overload the midfield for thirty seconds before dropping back just as suddenly.
"They're not playing the team we scouted," Kai said during a stoppage, mostly to himself.
Miguel, close enough to hear, exhaled. "Nobody plays the team you scouted in a Final."
---
In the twenty-third minute, San Isidro finally broke through the disorientation. Miguel intercepted a loose pass near midfield and, instead of forcing it forward immediately, held possession long enough to let the shape settle the same patience that had carried them past Aparri.
"Time!" he called, and San Isidro slowed the tempo deliberately, passing side to side, letting Tuguegarao East's energy cool by a few degrees.
Rafael received wide, cut inside, drew two defenders, and slipped it back to Miguel at the edge of the box. Miguel didn't shoot. He looked up, found Kai arriving at the far post, and threaded a pass through a gap that had opened for less than a second.
Kai's first touch was clean. His second touch was a shot, low, along the ground, beating the goalkeeper to his near post before he'd fully set his feet.
GOAL.
GOAL.
GOOOAL.
Behind him, the small San Isidro section found their loudest voice of the match so far, drowning out, for one moment, half a stadium of maroon and gold.
---
San Isidro 1 — 1 Tuguegarao East.Twenty-third minute.
Kai didn't celebrate wildly. He simply turned toward the bench, found Coach Ramirez's eyes, and nodded once. Coach nodded back, already moving on to the next thing.

Kai read it twice, standing near the center circle while his teammates reset around him. Three goals. Mission complete. He didn't have time to think about what the locked mission meant the referee was already waving play back on, and somewhere across the pitch, Salcedo was already looking for the ball again.
---
The half settled into something tighter after the equalizer, both teams more careful, the surprises from the opening minutes giving way to a kind of mutual respect neither side wanted to admit out loud. Tuguegarao East kept shifting their shape in small ways San Isidro hadn't fully solved. San Isidro kept finding Enrico whenever they needed a release valve.
In the thirty-eighth minute, Salcedo found half a yard against Tomas the first real sign that Coach's assignment wasn't foolproof and curled a shot that clipped the outside of the post, inches from restoring the lead.
Tomas exhaled hard, hands on his knees. "Almost."
"Almost isn't him scoring," Kai said, jogging past. "Stay tight."
Coach Ramirez, watching from the line, made a small note on his clipboard without shouting anything. Whatever it said, he kept it to himself for now.
---
The referee checked his watch as the half wound down, both teams trading cautious possession, nobody willing to gift the other a careless chance this close to the break.
The whistle sounded.
San Isidro 1 - 1 Tuguegarao East.Halftime.
Kai walked toward the bench, chest still heaving, replaying the opening four minutes over and over the formation nobody had scouted, the goal nobody had prepared for, the matchup that hadn't gone the way he expected at all.
Leo met him with a water bottle and a towel, saying nothing for a moment, just watching him drink.
"You expected Salcedo," Leo said eventually.
"Yeah."
"Nobody gets what they expect in a Final." Leo took the empty bottle back. "Adjust anyway. That's the job."
Whatever he'd thought this match would look like walking in, it wasn't this.
