The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Chapter 68: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Volume 2: The Regional Stage

The second half kicked off with the same physicality that had defined the first, Bryce immediately driving into midfield like the intervening fifteen minutes hadn't happened at all.

"He's still going," Rafael muttered, tracking back to help.

"Won't last," Miguel said, though even he sounded less certain than he had at halftime.

---

Ilagan City pushed hard in the opening exchanges, Vince Reyes drifting into the same dangerous pockets he'd found all match, Denver testing Jared's patience down the flank again and again. San Isidro absorbed it, content to let the early minutes bleed away without conceding anything careless.

In the fifty-second minute, Vince found another half-second of space just outside the box the exact kind of moment Coach had warned them about and curled a shot that clipped the outside of the post, inches from breaking the deadlock.

Enzo hadn't even needed to dive. He simply watched it pass, breathed out, and rolled the ball back into play.

"Too easy for him," Coach Ramirez said from the line, arms crossed. "Kai tighter on the switch. Don't let Miguel cover that lane alone."

Kai nodded, adjusting his position a fraction closer to the center.

---

San Isidro's response came slower this half, patience wearing thinner than it had against Aparri. Every time Kai received the ball wide, Migz was already there, square, composed, refusing to bite on anything Kai tried.

"He's not falling for it," Kai said during a break in play, frustration creeping into his voice for the first time all tournament.

Miguel jogged past. "Then stop trying to beat him alone."

Kai exhaled. Miguel was right, and the words landed harder because of it.

---

The tactical shift happened without anyone announcing it. Instead of running directly at Migz, Kai began drifting inside earlier, dragging his marker with him and opening the flank for Jared to overlap into instead. It wasn't flashy. It wasn't the kind of movement that showed up clean in a highlight reel. But it started working.

In the sixty-first minute, Jared found space down the right for the first time all match, driving a cross into the box that Marco narrowly failed to reach, the ball rolling out for a goal kick.

"Getting closer," Coach called.

Rafael, jogging past, muttered, "We keep saying that."

---

Ilagan City's response arrived through Bryce, who despite Miguel's prediction showed no visible sign of slowing. He won a physical duel with Tomas near midfield, shrugged off the contact, and drove a pass toward Vince that nearly split San Isidro's defense clean open. Carlo recovered just in time, sliding to intercept a half-second before Vince could turn and shoot.

"That was our half," Leo shouted from the sideline. "Wake up back there!"

Kai jogged back to help reorganize, chest already burning. The match had settled into the kind of tense, physical rhythm that punished the smallest lapse in concentration.

---

With twenty-five minutes remaining, Coach Ramirez made his error Tomas coming off, a fresh midfielder entering with instructions to press Bryce every time he touched the ball.

"Don't let him breathe," Coach said, gripping the substitute's shoulder before he ran on. "Not for one second."

The change worked immediately. Bryce, forced to release the ball faster than he wanted, began making small, uncharacteristic errors a heavy touch here, a rushed pass there. Small cracks, but cracks all the same.

Kai noticed. So did Miguel.

"He's tiring," Miguel said, breathless but certain now.

"Finally," Rafael said.

---

The breakthrough came in the seventy-third minute, and it started with the kind of unglamorous defending that rarely made it into anyone's retelling of the match. Nico won a loose ball in midfield, feeding it immediately to Miguel, who spotted Kai already peeling toward the inside channel the same movement that had dragged Migz out of position three or four times already without reward.

This time, Migz bit.

He stepped with Kai a half-beat too early, and the space he'd guarded all match finally opened up behind him. Miguel's pass split it perfectly. Jared, overlapping from the right exactly as he'd practiced for the last twenty minutes, met the ball in full stride.

His first touch carried him past the last defender. The goalkeeper came off his line.

Jared didn't shoot. He squared it low across the box instead the same read Kai had made against Riverside a lifetime ago in a different tournament, in a different volume of the same boy's life, though Jared had never heard that story and made the decision purely on instinct.

Rafael arrived at the far post a stride ahead of his marker.

He didn't need to think about it.

---

GOAL.

The strike wasn't pretty a scuffed connection more than a clean finish but the ball crossed the line and that was the only detail that mattered. Rafael stood frozen for half a second, staring at the net like he didn't quite trust it, before the whole San Isidro bench came sprinting toward him at once.

"I SCORED! I ACTUALLY SCORED!"

"We know," Miguel said, laughing, tackling him into a hug. "We were standing right here."

Kai reached them a step behind, breathless. "Called it."

Rafael pointed at him, still catching his breath. "You did NOT call it."

"I called the space. You finished it."

"That counts as calling it!"

Marco piled on top of both of them, and for a moment the whole tired, muddy weight of the tournament dissolved into noise and limbs and somebody's elbow catching Kai in the ribs.

---

Three hundred kilometers away, Sofia's textbook had been abandoned entirely on the couch cushion beside her.

"RAFAEL SCORED!" she screamed, loud enough that Maria came running from the kitchen with a dish towel still in hand.

"What happened?"

"RAFAEL! HE SCORED!"

Daniel appeared in the doorway, drawn by the noise, just in time to see the replay loop on the shaky phone-camera stream. He watched it twice before allowing himself a small, satisfied nod.

"Good ball from the fullback," he said, more to himself than anyone. "Somebody's been coaching that run."

Maria sat down beside Sofia, both of them leaning toward the small screen now. "How much time is left?"

Sofia checked. "Seventeen minutes."

"That's a long seventeen minutes."

"Don't say that, Mom."

---

San Isidro 1 - 0 Ilagan City.Seventy-third minute.

Ilagan City reset with visible urgency now, Bryce shouting instructions despite his own tiring legs, the whole team pushing higher in search of an equalizer they knew they needed soon. Vince Reyes dropped deeper, trying to find the pockets of space that had worked for him all match.

San Isidro answered the only way they knew how by now the same discipline that had carried them past Lal-lo in the rain, the same patience that had frustrated Aparri into mistakes. Drop deep. Stay compact. Make them earn every yard.

In the eighty-first minute, Vince nearly conjured something from nothing, cutting inside from the right and curling a shot that forced Enzo into his best save of the match full stretch, fingertips only, the ball tipped just over the bar.

"BREATHE," Leo shouted, though it wasn't clear if he meant the players or himself.

The resulting corner came to nothing, Carlo rising to clear it decisively.

---

The final ten minutes passed in the particular blur that came from legs running on fumes and willpower alone. Kai tracked back more than he attacked, chasing down every loose ball that came near him, doing the unglamorous work that had defined San Isidro's whole tournament run.

In stoppage time, Bryce found one last surge of energy, driving at Carlo with the same intensity he'd shown at kickoff. Carlo held firm, forced him wide, and the resulting cross sailed harmlessly out of play.

The referee checked his watch. Raised the whistle.

PEEP! PEEP! PEEEEP!

Full time.

San Isidro High School 1-0 Ilagan City National High School.

---

The celebration this time was pure exhaustion turned to joy players collapsing onto the grass, some too tired to even stand, Rafael lying flat on his back with both arms spread wide like he was trying to absorb the whole pitch through his shoulder blades.

"We're in the Final," he said to no one, to everyone, to the sky. "We're actually in the Final."

Kai dropped down beside him, chest heaving. "You scored the winner."

"I did." Rafael turned his head, grinning through the exhaustion. "I really did."

Miguel collapsed on Rafael's other side, and for a moment the three of them just lay there, letting the noise of the crowd wash over them, too tired to do anything but breathe.

---

Coach Ramirez found them a few minutes later, offering a hand to pull each player up in turn. When he reached Kai, he held on a moment longer than necessary.

"Good movement on that run," he said. "You dragged him out of position on purpose."

"Eventually," Kai admitted. "Took a while."

"That's how it usually works." Coach almost smiled. "One final left."

Kai looked toward the standings board near the officials' tent, where an official was already updating the bracket. He didn't need to check which team waited on the other side. He already knew.

Tuguegarao East.

The name sat there, calm and certain, exactly the way everyone had expected it would from the moment the brackets were drawn.

Kai exhaled, equal parts nerves and something that felt very close to readiness.

One match left.
