The board outside the officials' tent had been up since morning, and by the time San Isidro arrived at the sports complex, a small crowd had already gathered to read it.
"First place is right there," Rafael said, staring at the numbers like they might rearrange themselves if he looked hard enough. "We just have to not lose."
"That's still winning," Miguel said. "Don't make it sound easy."
Coach Ramirez didn't let them linger at the board. "Inside. Now."
---
The dressing room was quieter than usual. Not tense focused. Coach Ramirez didn't bother with a long tactical breakdown; they'd already spent two days watching Renzo pick apart Lal-lo's shape from deep midfield, and everyone in the room had a mental picture of what they were walking into.
"Renzo controls tempo," Coach said, tapping the whiteboard once. "If we let him have time, he'll find the pass eventually. So we don't give him time."
Miguel nodded slowly. "Press him early."
"Press him every time." Coach looked around the room. "Diego on their right physical, direct, doesn't waste effort. Kai, you'll feel him today."
Kai nodded. He already knew.
"Win this," Coach said, "and we finish first in the group. Lose, and we still likely advance but we hand the initiative to whoever we draw in the semis." He capped the marker. "So play like first place matters. Because it does."
---
The stadium had a different atmosphere than it had for Maddela or Lal-lo. Word had spread through the delegation grounds this was the match that decided Group A and by kickoff, the stands around Pitch Three were noticeably fuller, a mix of neutral supporters from other sports drifting over to watch.
Somewhere in the crowd, a small group of San Isidro classmates had made a banner out of bedsheet and marker. SAN ISIDRO FOOTBALL ONE MORE! it read, slightly crooked, held up by two students who looked prouder of the banner than embarrassed by the handwriting.
Rafael spotted it during warmups and nearly tripped over the ball. "We have a banner. We have an actual banner."
"Focus," Miguel said, dragging him back into the drill.
---
The referee's whistle cracked across the pitch. Aparri kicked off, and within the first thirty seconds, Kai understood exactly what Coach had warned them about.
Renzo didn't rush. He received the ball from his center-back, glanced up once, and instead of forcing anything forward, simply held it drawing Miguel toward him, patient, unbothered, like the whole match existed on his schedule and nobody else's.
"Press!" Coach shouted from the line.
Miguel closed the distance. Renzo waited a half-second longer than seemed wise, then flicked the ball around him with a single touch and was already facing forward before Miguel could recover.
The San Isidro bench let out a collective breath.
"He's good," Rafael muttered, tracking back.
"We knew that," Kai said.
---
Aparri worked the ball patiently through midfield for the opening ten minutes, probing, testing, never quite finding the gap they wanted. San Isidro held their shape, content to let Aparri have the ball in areas that didn't hurt them.
The first real moment of danger came when Diego, pushing forward from right-back, received a pass wide and drove directly at Jared with no hesitation at all. Jared backed off, cautious. Diego kept coming.
"Show him inside!" Leo shouted.
Jared angled his body, forcing Diego toward the center straight into Carlo, who met the challenge clean and won the ball with a shoulder that sent Diego stumbling.
Diego picked himself up without a word, jogged back into position, and didn't look at Carlo again. No handshake energy here. No conversation. Just business.
Kai watched it from the wing and felt something settle in his chest. Elias talked. Noel talked. This one doesn't.
---
San Isidro's first chance arrived through patience rather than pace. Miguel, growing more comfortable reading Renzo's press, slipped a ball between two Aparri midfielders and found Rafael running into space on the left.
Rafael carried it forward, cut inside, and slid a pass toward Kai arriving at the top of the box.
Diego was there before the ball was.
He didn't dive in. He simply arrived, body first, cutting the passing lane and forcing Kai to check his run and lay it back to Tomas instead. Tomas's shot from distance sailed over the bar, and the small home-adjacent crowd around the pitch groaned in unison.
"Good pressure," Coach called. "Again!"
Kai jogged back, already feeling the shape of the afternoon. This wasn't going to open up easily. Nothing about Aparri suggested it would.
---
The deadlock nearly broke in the twenty-second minute. Renzo, given half a yard by a slipping midfielder, threaded a pass that split San Isidro's back line clean in two. Aparri's striker was through, one-on-one, the kind of chance that decided group finals.
Enzo came off his line fast, closing the angle, and the striker's shot flew straight into his chest.
The San Isidro section erupted. Rafael sprinted the length of the box just to slap Enzo's gloves. "THAT'S OUR KEEPER!"
"Get back," Enzo said, already rolling the ball out, no interest in the celebration disrupting his focus.
---
Somewhere near the fence, a phone was recording. The clip would surface online before halftime even arrived Enzo's save, replayed from three different angles by three different students, captioned with variations of SAN ISIDRO KEEPER IS NOT PLAYING AROUND.
None of the players knew that yet. They were too busy resetting for the goal kick.
---
The half wore on tight, physical, few clean chances for either side. Just before the whistle, San Isidro nearly broke through Kai, running at Diego for the fourth or fifth time, finally beat him with a sharp change of pace, only for a covering center-back to slide in and concede a corner instead of a clear sight of goal.
The corner came to nothing. The referee blew for halftime.
San Isidro 0 — 0 Aparri.
---
In the shade of the dugout, Coach Ramirez didn't raise his voice. "Renzo's controlling tempo. Fine. Let him control it in areas that don't hurt us." He looked at Kai. "Diego's not going to get tired. He's not that type. You'll have to out-think him, not outrun him."
Kai nodded, chest still heaving. "He barely talks."
"Some players don't need to." Coach capped his water bottle. "Doesn't mean he's not feeling the pressure. Keep going at him. Eventually something gives."
---
The second half opened with more urgency. Aparri, sensing the draw wasn't good enough for their own group position, pushed higher Renzo dropping deeper to dictate, their fullbacks stepping forward, the whole team leaning toward the ambition of a winner.
That ambition left space behind them.
In the fifty-fourth minute, Nico won the ball cleanly in midfield and found Miguel immediately. Miguel didn't hesitate one touch forward, a quick look up, and the pass was already threading toward the right channel before Aparri's defense had reorganized.
Kai took it in stride. Diego recovered fast, closing the gap with the same cold efficiency he'd shown all match, but this time Kai didn't try to beat him with speed.
He cut inside instead, sudden, no warning, the ball rolling across his body in one motion.
Diego adjusted barely too late.
Kai found himself with half a step of space at the edge of the box, defenders scrambling to cover, and no time to think past the next decision.

The notification barely registered. Kai's eyes were already on the goalkeeper's positioning, already on Marco's run to the near post, already on the smallest gap at the far corner.
He struck it before the system had even finished fading.
The ball skipped once off the turf and beat the keeper low to his right.
GOAL.
For a half-second the pitch went silent. Then the San Isidro section exploded the crooked banner shaking wildly above the crowd, Rafael sprinting the length of the field with both arms out, Miguel arriving a step behind him.

Kai barely had time to register the number before Rafael crashed into him.
"THAT'S TWO NOW! TWO GOALS THIS TOURNAMENT!"
"One more," Kai said, laughing despite himself.
Rafael blinked. "How do you already know it's one more?"
Kai didn't answer that. He just grinned and jogged back toward the center circle.
---
San Isidro 1 - 0 Aparri. Fifty-fourth minute.
Renzo gathered his team quickly, no visible frustration, simply reorganizing with the same patience he'd carried since kickoff. Diego jogged back into position without a word, though Kai caught something in his expression this time not anger. Recalibration.
Aparri pushed harder after that, Renzo pulling the strings from deeper positions, trying to drag San Isidro out of their shape. In the sixty-third minute, a clever one-two nearly split the defense open completely, the ball rolling just wide of the far post with the goal gaping.
The crowd gasped as one. Enzo let out a breath he'd clearly been holding since the shot left the boot.
"Too close," Leo shouted. "Tighten up!"
---
With fifteen minutes remaining, Coach Ramirez made his move a fresh pair of legs on the wing, Rafael dropping back to help shore up the midfield, the same defensive discipline that had carried them through the Lal-lo match now deployed again.
Aparri threw more numbers forward. San Isidro absorbed it, cycled the ball when they had it, refused to gift anything away cheap.
In stoppage time, Renzo nearly conjured something from nothing a swirling free kick that clipped the crossbar and bounced clear, the Aparri bench rising in unison before sinking back down as the danger passed.
The referee checked his watch. Raised the whistle.
PEEP! PEEP! PEEEEP!
Full time.
San Isidro High School 1 — 0 Aparri National High School.

The celebration wasn't as wild as the Maddela win had been no viral clip in the making this time, just a tired, satisfied team collapsing into a loose huddle near the center circle. Group A champions. First place, secured.
Kai found Diego in the handshake line. The defender's grip was firm, brief, no unnecessary words.
"Good match," Kai offered.
Diego studied him for a second. "You earned that goal."
It wasn't warm. It wasn't cold either. Just honest.
Renzo arrived a moment later, extending his hand with something closer to a smile. "You're better than I expected."
"So are you," Kai said. "I mean that."
Renzo's smile widened slightly. "First place. Congratulations." He glanced toward the standings board, already being updated by an official nearby. "We'll see who we draw."
"Good luck in the semis," Kai said.
"You too. Assuming we don't meet there instead."
They both knew the bracket didn't work that way — but neither corrected it. Some things sounded better left as a maybe.
---
On the bus ride back, the mood was lighter than tired legs should have allowed. Rafael recounted the goal for what had to be the fifth time, embellishing a new detail with every telling. Miguel let him, mostly amused, occasionally correcting a detail that had drifted too far from what actually happened.
Kai sat by the window, watching Tuguegarao slide past, the number still sitting quietly at the back of his mind.
Two down. One more.
He didn't know when the third would come. He didn't know what waited on the other side of it. But for the first time since the tournament began, the thought didn't feel like pressure.
It felt like something worth chasing.
Belle's camera clicked somewhere behind him, catching the exact moment his reflection in the window started to smile without him noticing.
