The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Chapter 44: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Volume 1: The Impossible Dream

The whistle sounded.

North Central restarted from the center circle.

89:58.

Four minutes of added time.

That was all San Isidro had.

Kai looked at the scoreboard.

San Isidro High School 0 – 1 North Central High School

His legs were heavy.

His shirt clung to his back, soaked with sweat. Every breath felt rough against his throat.

But he kept moving.

One attack.

That was all he needed.

Miguel received the ball and immediately looked forward.

Kai pointed toward the left.

Miguel saw him.

The pass came.

Kai took it on the move.

A defender closed quickly.

Kai pushed the ball ahead, but another North Central player shifted across to cover.

The space disappeared.

Kai stopped.

The defender stopped with him.

For half a second, neither player moved.

Kai remembered Gabriel.

Make him move first.

The defender leaned toward the inside.

Kai waited.

The defender committed.

Kai pushed the ball outside.

He was gone.

The crowd rose.

"GO, KAI!"

Kai drove toward the box.

Rafael was running through the middle.

Jared was arriving behind him.

Miguel followed near the edge of the area.

Kai looked up.

The goalkeeper stepped forward.

Rafael shouted.

"Kai!"

Kai crossed.

Low.

Hard.

The ball cut across the face of goal.

Rafael stretched.

His boot missed by inches.

"Ah!"

The ball continued across the six-yard box.

Jared slid.

He couldn't reach it.

A defender tried to clear.

His boot caught the ball badly.

It bounced back into the danger area.

Kai had already changed direction.

He sprinted toward it.

The goalkeeper dropped.

Kai reached the ball first.

He shot.

Saved.

The rebound spilled loose.

Rafael reached it.

A defender threw himself in front of him.

Blocked.

The ball rolled back toward Kai.

He didn't hesitate.

One final touch.

The shot slipped through two bodies.

The goalkeeper twisted.

Too late.

The ball crossed the line.

For a moment, Kai didn't move.

Then the referee pointed toward the center circle.

"GOAL!"

The commentator's voice cracked.

"SAN ISIDRO HAVE FOUND THE EQUALIZER!"

The sound hit Kai like a wave.

Students screamed.

Teachers jumped to their feet.

The San Isidro bench rushed toward the touchline.

Someone behind the goal was shouting Kai's name over and over.

Rafael crashed into him.

"WE'RE BACK!"

Kai nearly fell.

"Get off me!"

"You scored!"

"I know!"

Miguel grabbed both of them.

"One more."

His voice was breathless, but serious.

"One more."

Jared arrived behind them.

"Four minutes."

Rafael pointed toward the center circle.

"Then let's steal the whole thing."

Kai laughed.

The scoreboard changed.

90:59

San Isidro High School 1 – 1 North Central High School

For the first time in several minutes, Kai looked toward the stands.

Maria had both hands over her mouth.

Sofia was jumping beside Belle.

Daniel was already standing.

He wasn't shouting.

He was clapping.

Slowly.

Steadily.

As if he needed to convince himself that what he had just seen was real.

Belle lifted her camera.

The shutter clicked.

Again.

And again.

She caught Kai laughing while Rafael had an arm around his neck.

She caught Miguel shouting toward the center circle.

She caught the scoreboard.

And then she caught Daniel.

Still clapping.

---

North Central restarted quickly.

The match wasn't over.

Kai turned toward his own half.

Gabriel received the ball.

He didn't look tired.

Not yet.

He turned away from Miguel and carried it forward.

Kai immediately began tracking back.

Gabriel slipped past the first challenge.

Rafael moved across.

Gabriel cut inside.

Rafael tried to close the angle.

Gabriel pushed the ball between his feet.

The crowd gasped.

"Gabriel!"

Jared stepped forward.

Gabriel shifted again.

He was through.

For a moment, North Central had the opening they needed.

Gabriel entered the penalty area.

One-on-one.

The San Isidro goalkeeper rushed out.

Gabriel opened his body.

Shot.

The goalkeeper stood tall and blocked it with his chest.

The ball bounced away.

The crowd roared.

Kai turned immediately.

"Clear it!"

The defender kicked the ball toward the sideline.

Gabriel stood still for a second.

He looked at the goalkeeper.

Then at Kai.

Kai was breathing hard.

Gabriel gave him a small nod.

Not finished.

Kai understood.

Neither are we.

---

91:26.

San Isidro won the second ball.

Miguel recovered it.

"Move!"

Kai started forward.

Miguel played it into his path.

Kai controlled.

A defender stepped toward him.

He passed to Rafael.

Rafael returned it immediately.

Kai moved again.

The defender followed.

Kai slowed.

The defender slowed.

Kai suddenly accelerated.

The defender reacted.

Kai cut inside.

The defender reached.

Missed.

Kai was through.

The stadium rose with him.

One defender remained.

The goalkeeper stood near the penalty spot.

Kai slowed.

His lungs burned.

His calves were almost numb.

The defender moved closer.

Kai remembered Gabriel.

Make him move first.

He touched the ball to the left.

The defender shifted.

Kai waited.

One heartbeat.

The defender stepped forward.

Kai went the other way.

He pushed the ball past him.

The goalkeeper rushed out.

Kai entered the box.

The far corner was open.

He could shoot.

But he didn't.

Not yet.

The goalkeeper expected the strike.

Kai waited.

Just a fraction longer.

The goalkeeper committed.

Kai calmly placed the ball around him.

Low.

Toward the far post.

The ball rolled across the grass.

The goalkeeper turned.

He stretched.

He couldn't reach it.

The defender was too far behind.

Kai watched.

The ball crossed the line.

92:41.

For one second, there was silence.

Then—

"GOOOOOOOOOOOOOAL!"

The commentator completely lost his voice.

"SAN ISIDRO HAVE DONE IT!"

Kai stood frozen.

He couldn't hear anything clearly anymore.

The crowd had become one enormous wall of sound.

Rafael came flying toward him.

"KAI!"

He crashed into him.

Kai stumbled backward, laughing.

Miguel arrived.

Jared followed.

Someone grabbed his shirt.

Someone slapped the back of his head.

Someone was shouting directly beside his ear.

Kai didn't know who.

He didn't care.

He looked toward the stands.

Maria was crying.

Sofia was screaming.

Belle had the camera raised.

And Daniel—

Daniel was still clapping.

Kai's smile slowly changed.

He remembered the boots.

The old black boots Daniel had given him before the season.

They carried my dream.

Kai looked down.

They were still on his feet.

The same worn leather.

The same cracked surface.

Only now they had carried him to the biggest moment of his young career.

Daniel looked at them too.

His expression softened.

He remembered the morning he'd handed them over.

They're old.

They're not expensive.

But they carried my dream.

Now his son was standing in those same boots after scoring the goal that had turned the final around.

Daniel lowered his head for a moment.

When he looked up again, his eyes were wet.

He didn't wipe them.

He simply kept clapping.

Daniel swallowed.

"...You went farther than I ever could."

Then he smiled.

"Good job, son."

Maria heard him.

She smiled through her tears.

---

North Central restarted.

92:58.

They had almost no time.

Gabriel received the ball again.

Kai immediately turned toward him.

North Central pushed forward.

One long pass.

Jared headed it away.

The ball fell to Gabriel.

He controlled it beautifully.

Kai moved toward him.

Gabriel tried one last run.

He slipped past Miguel.

Then Rafael.

Jared stepped across.

Gabriel tried to find the gap.

There wasn't one.

Kai closed from behind.

Gabriel looked up.

The goalkeeper was ready.

There was nowhere to go.

He passed.

The ball was intercepted.

San Isidro cleared.

The North Central players looked toward the referee.

The referee checked his watch.

94:01.

One final attack.

A long ball was sent toward the box.

The San Isidro goalkeeper came out.

He punched it away.

The ball flew toward the halfway line.

Rafael chased it.

He reached it first and kicked it toward the corner.

The clock kept moving.

94:18.

North Central recovered.

They tried again.

Miguel blocked the pass.

The ball went out.

The referee looked at his watch.

Then raised the whistle.

Kai stopped.

Rafael stopped.

Gabriel stood near midfield.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then—

Peeeeeeeeep!

The final whistle.

Kai closed his eyes.

The weight finally left his body.

His knees almost gave way.

Rafael grabbed his shoulder.

"Don't you dare fall."

Kai laughed weakly.

"I'm tired."

"Good."

Rafael pulled him into a hug.

"You earned it."

Miguel joined them.

Jared wrapped an arm around both of them.

The four stood together while the San Isidro supporters sang from the stands.

San Isidro High School 2 – 1 North Central High School.

They had done it.

They had won the final.

---

Coach Ramirez walked onto the pitch.

He didn't celebrate wildly.

He simply stood in front of his players.

Everyone slowly gathered around him.

Coach looked at them one by one.

Sweat.

Grass stains.

Tired faces.

Some were laughing.

Some were still trying to understand what had happened.

Coach took a breath.

"You boys made history."

The players became quiet.

He looked toward the scoreboard.

"People will remember that you won."

He looked at every player.

"I'll remember how you refused to lose."

Nobody spoke.

Coach Ramirez nodded once.

"Enjoy this."

"Because you earned every second of it."

The players broke into cheers.

Rafael shouted.

"WE'RE CHAMPIONS!"

The team erupted again.

Coach smiled.

For once, he let them make as much noise as they wanted.

---

Gabriel eventually walked toward Kai.

The celebration around them seemed to fade for a moment.

Gabriel stopped in front of him.

"You learned."

Kai breathed out a tired laugh.

"From you."

Gabriel nodded.

"Good."

He held out his hand.

Kai shook it.

Gabriel's grip was firm.

No anger.

No excuses.

Just respect.

"Keep going," Gabriel said.

Kai looked at him.

"You too."

Gabriel smiled faintly.

Then he walked back toward his teammates.

Kai watched him leave.

He knew this wasn't the last time their paths would cross.

Football had a funny way of bringing people back together.

---

Kai looked around the field.

The grass was torn in places.

Water bottles were scattered near the benches.

The evening air smelled of wet grass and sweat.

The scoreboard still showed the final score.

He remembered something.

A different morning.

A different field.

A fifteen-year-old boy carrying an old football before sunrise because he had nowhere else to go.

Back then, nobody was watching.

There were no cameras.

No cheering crowd.

No commentator shouting his name.

Just Kai.

And a dream that everyone thought was too big for him.

Today, thousands had watched him chase that same dream.

The field had changed.

So had he.

Kai smiled.

A familiar blue screen appeared quietly at the edge of his vision.

For a moment, he expected something.

A reward.

A new skill.

A notification celebrating the victory.

Instead—

[Football Legacy System]

Match Complete.

Result:

Victory

Performance Assessment:

Completed.

Reward:

None.

No reward has been issued.

Reason:

This victory was earned through your own decisions.

Kai stared at it.

Then smiled.

"Good."

The screen disappeared.

He didn't need anything else.

Not tonight.

---

Belle appeared in front of him with her camera hanging from her neck.

"Hey."

Kai looked at her.

"You got pictures?"

Belle raised an eyebrow.

"Do you really have to ask?"

Kai laughed.

She turned the camera around.

The last photo showed him standing with Rafael and Miguel.

Sweaty.

Exhausted.

Smiling.

Behind them, the scoreboard glowed.

2–1.

Belle smiled.

"I got the moment."

Kai looked at the picture.

For once, he didn't know what to say.

So he simply nodded.

"Thanks."

Belle lowered the camera.

"You're welcome."

From the stands, Sofia shouted.

"Kai!"

He looked up.

His family was waiting.

Kai smiled.

Then he started walking toward them.

Not running.

Not celebrating.

Just walking.

Because for the first time in his life, he wasn't chasing the dream alone.

And somewhere beyond the stadium lights, a much bigger football world was waiting.

But tonight...

Kai Bendaño was simply fifteen years old.

A son.

A teammate.

A boy who had once believed in something nobody else could see.

And now—

everyone had seen it.

The impossible dream was no longer impossible.

It had finally become a path.

And Kai was ready to keep walking.
