Chapter 42: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup
Volume 1: The Impossible Dream
The ball was barely back in play when Kai felt the difference.
The stadium hadn't calmed down.
North Central's supporters were still celebrating, their voices rolling across the covered stands in waves. Somewhere behind the goal, someone kept shouting Gabriel's name as if saying it often enough would make the score impossible to change.
Kai tried to ignore it.
He couldn't.
Not because the noise bothered him.
Because every time he heard it, he remembered the way Gabriel had raised one finger.
A warning.
Kai looked toward the scoreboard.
74:36
There was still time.
Not much.
But enough.
Miguel received the restart and immediately played the ball to Rafael. Rafael's first touch was heavy, and a North Central midfielder nearly intercepted.
"Rafa!"
"I've got it."
Rafael recovered and sent the ball back to Miguel.
Kai moved into space.
The defender followed him.
For a moment, neither player said anything.
Kai could feel the defender's shadow beside him.
He changed direction.
The defender changed with him.
Kai stopped.
The defender stopped too.
Fine.
Kai glanced toward Miguel.
The pass came along the ground.
Kai stepped toward it, using his body to shield the ball.
The defender leaned into him.
Kai nearly lost his balance.
He kept the ball anyway.
"Turn!"
Rafael's voice came from the right.
Kai looked.
Rafael was open.
He could pass.
But Gabriel was already moving toward Miguel.
Kai saw the space behind him.
"Back!"
He returned the ball to Miguel and immediately sprinted forward.
Miguel understood.
One touch.
Then a long pass into the space.
Kai went after it.
The right-back was forced to turn.
For the first time since Gabriel's goal, North Central's back line looked uncomfortable.
Kai reached the ball near the corner.
He slowed down.
The defender was waiting.
Rafael arrived behind him.
"Two."
Kai glanced over his shoulder.
Rafael was pointing toward the box.
Kai rolled the ball backward.
Rafael crossed.
The ball hung in the air for a moment before dropping toward Jared.
Jared jumped.
His header was powerful.
The goalkeeper caught it.
Jared landed and stared at the ground.
"Of course."
Rafael laughed.
"You want me to apologize?"
"No."
Jared looked at him.
"I want the goalkeeper to disappear."
Kai couldn't help laughing.
It was brief.
But it was enough to loosen something in his chest.
They were still playing.
That mattered.
---
On the sideline, Coach Ramirez watched the North Central defenders retreat.
Leo stood beside him, holding the tactical board against his hip.
"They're dropping now," Leo said.
Ramirez nodded.
"They don't want another chance like that."
Leo glanced toward Kai.
"He's finding the right side again."
"He knows where the space is."
"And Gabriel?"
Ramirez's eyes moved toward the center circle.
Gabriel was already looking toward Kai.
"He's waiting for us to overcommit."
Leo exhaled through his nose.
"Of course he is."
Ramirez didn't smile.
"That's why we don't give him the counter."
Leo nodded.
Then he shouted toward the field.
"Kai! Don't force it!"
Kai heard him.
He lifted a hand.
Don't force it.
That was harder than it sounded.
Every part of him wanted to run forward.
They were losing.
The clock was moving.
His legs were already tired.
And somewhere inside his head, a voice kept saying that this might be the last chance they would ever get.
But Coach Ramirez had said it before.
Don't play against the clock.
Play the next ball.
Kai breathed out slowly.
Then he looked toward Gabriel.
The other boy was watching him.
Waiting.
Kai almost smiled.
"Not yet."
---
76:18
North Central had the ball.
Their midfielders moved it between themselves, trying to slow the game down.
The crowd reacted immediately.
"Come on!"
"Press!"
"Go!"
Kai stayed where he was.
Miguel didn't rush either.
Rafael was holding his position.
North Central passed sideways again.
Then backward.
The San Isidro supporters became impatient.
But Coach Ramirez didn't move.
He simply watched.
Finally, the North Central center-back tried to break the pressure with a pass through midfield.
Miguel stepped in.
He intercepted.
The stadium erupted.
"GO!"
Miguel didn't waste the moment.
He drove forward.
Kai was already running.
Rafael sprinted down the right.
Jared followed the attack.
Three red shirts.
Three blue shirts retreating.
Miguel looked left.
Kai kept running.
The pass came.
Kai received it just outside the box.
The defender closed immediately.
Kai touched the ball inside.
The defender followed.
Kai stopped.
His legs felt heavy.
His breathing was rough.
But his head was clear.
He remembered Gabriel.
The way he waited.
The way he made defenders move first.
Kai shifted his weight.
The defender moved.
Kai went the opposite way.
He was past him.
The crowd exploded.
Another defender stepped across.
Kai looked toward the goal.
The goalkeeper was slightly off his line.
He could shoot.
He almost did.
Then he saw Rafael.
Rafael was standing near the penalty spot, completely free.
Kai passed.
Rafael's eyes widened.
He had expected a shot.
The ball arrived at his feet.
"Rafa!"
Rafael struck it.
The goalkeeper blocked it with his shoulder.
The rebound flew upward.
Kai rushed in.
He jumped.
A defender got there first and headed it away.
Kai landed awkwardly.
For a second, his knee touched the grass.
He pushed himself back up.
Rafael ran toward him.
"You okay?"
Kai nodded.
"Yeah."
Rafael looked at the goal.
"That was it."
Kai wiped the grass from his knee.
"No."
Rafael frowned.
"What?"
Kai looked at him.
"That wasn't it."
Rafael stared for a second.
Then he grinned.
"Good."
---
In the stands, Sofia was already standing again.
"Why didn't he shoot?"
Maria grabbed her hand.
"Because Rafael was open."
"But Rafael missed."
"He didn't miss."
Sofia pointed toward the field.
"The goalkeeper stopped it."
Daniel laughed.
"You're defending everyone now?"
Sofia crossed her arms.
"I'm just saying."
Belle smiled.
"She's right, though."
Maria looked at her.
"About what?"
Belle watched Kai return to his position.
"He didn't make the wrong choice."
Daniel's expression softened.
"That's the important part."
Maria looked at Kai.
He wasn't celebrating.
He wasn't complaining.
He was already preparing for the next play.
She quietly whispered,
"That's my boy."
---
77:41
North Central restarted from the goalkeeper.
The long kick went toward the center.
Gabriel moved underneath it.
Kai saw him.
He started forward.
Gabriel controlled the ball on his chest.
Miguel was closing.
Kai came from behind.
Gabriel tried to turn.
Miguel blocked the first path.
Kai blocked the second.
Gabriel stopped.
For once, there was nowhere obvious to go.
He looked left.
Nothing.
Right.
Nothing.
Behind him.
Miguel.
Gabriel's mouth curved slightly.
Then he flicked the ball over Kai's foot.
Kai turned.
Gabriel was through.
"Gabriel!"
Miguel shouted.
Kai chased.
Gabriel accelerated.
His first few steps were frighteningly quick.
Kai pushed himself harder.
The grass seemed to blur beneath his feet.
Gabriel reached the edge of the final third.
Kai was almost beside him.
Gabriel tried to cut inside.
Kai leaned into him.
Shoulder to shoulder.
Gabriel stayed upright.
Kai reached again.
This time, his foot touched the ball.
It rolled loose.
Gabriel stumbled.
Kai recovered it.
The San Isidro supporters roared.
"YES!"
Kai didn't celebrate.
He was already running.
He passed to Miguel.
Miguel returned it.
Kai kept moving.
For a second, he felt something he hadn't felt since the beginning of the match.
Control.
Not of the whole game.
Just of one moment.
And that was enough.
---
Arturo Villanueva had been standing for several minutes without realizing it.
His notebook hung loosely in one hand.
The match had stopped being interesting because of Gabriel.
Now it was interesting because of Kai.
The boy had conceded the first goal.
He had been challenged repeatedly.
He had missed chances.
And yet his decisions were becoming calmer.
Arturo finally opened his notebook again.
He wrote:
Pressure isn't breaking him.
He paused.
Then added:
It's sharpening him.
A voice beside him spoke.
"Still watching the left winger?"
Arturo glanced over.
Another scout had approached.
Arturo nodded.
"Yes."
"Gabriel?"
Arturo looked back toward the field.
"He's still the best player on the pitch."
The other scout smiled.
"Then why are you watching Kai?"
Arturo closed the notebook.
"Because the game is changing."
The scout followed his gaze.
Kai was already moving into position.
Arturo smiled faintly.
"Gabriel woke up first."
He looked toward the scoreboard.
"Now I want to see what Kai does."
---
78:53
The match became faster.
Neither team wanted to give the other room.
A tackle in midfield.
A loose ball.
A clearance.
Another pass.
The crowd no longer sat quietly between attacks.
Every possession felt like it could become something.
Coach Ramirez shouted instructions.
Leo kept moving along the technical area, calling players into position.
"Stay compact!"
"Don't chase!"
"Rafael, wider!"
"Jared, hold!"
Kai heard everything in pieces.
His breathing was becoming heavier.
His calves were beginning to ache.
He ignored it.
Miguel found him again.
Kai received near the left touchline.
A defender approached.
This time, Kai didn't try to beat him.
He passed backward.
The defender hesitated.
That was all Kai needed.
He immediately moved into the space behind him.
Miguel returned the ball.
Kai was free.
The crowd rose.
He carried it forward.
One defender.
Then another.
Kai slowed.
The first defender stepped toward him.
Kai pushed the ball toward the line.
The defender followed.
Kai stopped.
He looked inside.
Miguel was there.
Rafael was making a diagonal run.
Jared was entering the box.
Three options.
Kai chose the simplest one.
He passed to Miguel.
Miguel took one touch and switched the ball across the field.
Rafael received it.
The right-back had been pulled inside.
Space opened.
Rafael saw it.
He crossed early.
Jared rose.
Header.
Wide.
The crowd groaned again.
Jared landed.
"How many?"
Rafael shouted from outside the box.
"Three!"
Jared held up three fingers.
"I hate this game."
Kai laughed as he jogged back.
"You've got time."
Jared looked at the scoreboard.
"Do we?"
Kai didn't answer.
Because he knew exactly what Jared meant.
The clock was approaching eighty.
---
79:47
North Central's captain collected the ball near the sideline.
He looked toward Gabriel.
Gabriel pointed forward.
The captain passed.
Gabriel received.
Kai started toward him.
This time Gabriel didn't wait.
He pushed the ball forward and accelerated.
Kai followed.
Gabriel cut inside.
Kai stayed with him.
Gabriel tried to create separation.
Kai refused to give it.
The two ran side by side.
Gabriel glanced over.
For the first time, there was something different in his expression.
Not confidence.
Not amusement.
Recognition.
He knew Kai was staying with him.
Kai saw it.
And something inside him clicked.
He can be stopped.
Not forever.
Not easily.
But he could be stopped.
Gabriel pushed the ball ahead.
Kai stepped across.
The ball hit Kai's foot and rolled out for a throw.
The North Central supporters booed.
Kai barely noticed.
Gabriel stopped near the touchline.
He looked at Kai.
Kai looked back.
Neither spoke.
Then Gabriel nodded once.
Kai did the same.
No anger.
No words.
Just two players acknowledging the battle.
The referee signaled for the throw-in.
The clock kept moving.
80:11.
And San Isidro still had a chance.
