Chapter 86: Judging a Book by Its Cover
Qin Yun had never imagined she would be turned away at the door. She had found out yesterday that there were precious medicinal herbs up for auction this time, so she absolutely had to get inside.
She pleaded with the manager, "Please, I'm begging you, let us in. There's something we absolutely have to bid on."
The manager shook his head and said arrogantly, "No means no. Show me an invitation, or you're not getting in."
He thoroughly enjoyed the feeling of others begging him. At times like this, he felt superior to everyone else.
Qin Yun was frantic. The auction was starting in just half an hour. Where was she supposed to find an invitation now?
Chen Dong asked calmly, "What if I'm here to auction an item?"
The manager sized up Chen Dong, then glanced at the long, silk-wrapped object in his hands.
He sneered, "Looking as shabby as you do, what could you possibly have to auction? Don't tell me it's that tattered bundle in your hand! That's something no one would even pick out of a trash can, and you're bringing it here to make a fool of yourself! Hurry up and leave. Don't block the entrance to our auction house."
A hint of displeasure crossed Chen Dong's face. "Are you sure this thing in my hand is trash? Aren't you going to take a proper look?"
"Hah! What's there to see? You're with Celestial Empress Qin, aren't you? What valuables could the Qin Family possibly have left? They sold everything off long ago. Just this morning, I heard they're about to sell their ancestral villa. If that thing in your hand was worth any money, would the Qin Family still be selling their villa? What a joke!" the manager scoffed.
Chen Dong hadn't wanted to waste his breath on someone so snobbish, but seeing Qin Yun's anxious expression, he sighed and said, "Then open your damn eyes and take a good look!"
As he spoke, he flicked his wrist, and the silk cloth covering the ancient sword instantly fell away.
The ancient sword was revealed to everyone, its divine aura flowing around it!
Unexpectedly, the manager simply raised an eyebrow. "Nice workmanship! Who knows if it's just some modern piece of art? Trying to pull a fast one at our auction house, are you?"
He glanced at the ancient sword a couple more times, marveling inwardly. 'This ancient sword is truly beautiful.'
The hilt was engraved with inscriptions, the guard featured a strange flower, and the blade itself was covered in bizarre, recessed talismans. The craftsmanship was exquisite.
He arrogantly asked Chen Dong, "Does it have a certificate or an expert's authentication papers?"
Chen Dong chuckled. "Something like this needs a certificate or papers?"
Hearing there was no certificate, the manager jeered, "Of course it does! You think you can just bring in any random craft project to be auctioned? It looks nice, I'll give you that, but without a certificate or authentication, our auction house won't accept it. You can take it to a street corner and try your luck. If you find a sucker, selling it for thirty to fifty thousand shouldn't be a problem!"
In his heart, he had already decided it was just a replica.
When Chen Dong heard "thirty to fifty thousand," he was so angry he laughed. If a genuine Divine Artifact sold for a mere thirty to fifty thousand, then *he* would be the sucker.
Immediately, he channeled his True Qi into the ancient sword, unleashing the unique divine aura of a Divine Artifact. Then, with a wave of his hand, he plunged the sword straight into the ground before him, burying half the blade.
Seeing this, the manager shouted, "What, are you trying to force your way into our auction house? Guards! Seize him!"
A few security guards heard the call and were about to step forward to deal with Chen Dong.
Chen Dong, calm and unfazed, said coolly, "Your auction house can't recognize a real treasure. I'm just letting you see if it's genuine or not."
The manager snapped, "Genuine or not? You stick a sword in our doorway and ask if it's genuine! Throw this kid out..."
Chen Dong remained unmoved, a cold smirk on his face as he watched the manager. He had unleashed the sword's divine aura precisely to attract the attention of someone at the auction house who would recognize it. Just as he expected, he could already sense a Grandmaster with profound cultivation approaching rapidly.
"Idiot! Shut your mouth!" A voice like a clap of thunder exploded next to the manager's ear.
An elderly, white-bearded man with the dignified air of an immortal walked over quickly.
When the manager saw the old man, his expression instantly turned to panic. He said fawningly, "Master Zhang, it was this kid causing a ruckus that disturbed you. Please don't be angry, I'll take care of it immediately!"
The manager's heart was pounding with anxiety. This old man was the Wanluo Auction's Tributor and head appraiser. A lowly manager like himself was nothing in his eyes. If he wanted to fire him, all it would take was a single word.
Before the manager could do anything, Master Zhang slapped him across the face and cursed, "You blind fool! You can get lost. The Wanluo Auction has no need for you."
The manager clutched his face, unable to believe his ears. If he was fired from the auction house, his chance to feel superior to others would be gone forever.
Then, to his astonishment, he saw Master Zhang, who was usually unbearably arrogant, bow to the very kid he had looked down on and say apologetically:
"My young friend, I am terribly sorry. With so many staff members at the auction house, it's inevitable that a blind fool would slip through the cracks. However, he has now been fired! Might I trouble you to let this old man examine this Divine Artifact more closely?"
This was Chen Dong's goal all along. As for the manager, Chen Dong couldn't care less. A character like that wasn't even worth his notice.
He grasped the hilt, pulled the ancient sword out with a light tug, and handed it to the old man.
His face beaming with excitement, the old man put on a pair of gloves and accepted the sword with the same care and caution one would use for a priceless antique.
He studied it for a moment, his eyes overflowing with brilliance. His expression fervent, he said, "Young friend, please come to the private room so we can discuss this in detail!"
