Chapter 43: Serving as a Tributor
When the meeting concluded, the three members of the Li Family signed the financing contract with Xuyang Investment. The remaining funding gap was covered by the other shareholders. Although the funds were secured, the Li Family's crisis was far from over.
The three Li Family members had wanted to ask for clarification on the investment. They could tell it had something to do with Chen Dong, but time was short. Representatives from the five major banks were about to arrive, so they had no time to ask questions and rushed off to prepare.
Only Chen Dong and the two members of the Yang Family remained in the conference room.
Yang Anyi's sharp eyes were fixed on Chen Dong.
He was Yang Rong's second uncle and Yang Yushan's second son. He had always managed the Yang Family's investment sector and had done an excellent job, earning him the moniker "Investment Qilin." Inviting Chen Dong to serve as the Yang Family's Tributor was also his idea.
He addressed Chen Dong earnestly, "Mr. Chen, our deal is done. From now on, you are the Yang Family's Tributor!"
"Of course," Chen Dong said with a nod.
But now that they were partners, Chen Dong inquired, "I killed your father and your older brother. Don't you hate me?"
Yang Anyi replied solemnly, "If we're talking about hatred, then of course I feel it. But the Yang Family's current circumstances force us to seek your help, Mr. Chen. My father, the family's public-facing Grandmaster, is dead. My older brother, who was our trump card, is also dead. The Yang Family is in desperate need of a Grandmaster to stabilize the situation."
"With a family as large and wealthy as the Yang Family, our fortune is enough to tempt anyone's heart. If we were to find a Grandmaster of unknown character, we would constantly worry about him swallowing the family whole. But with you, Mr. Chen, the Yang Family can be completely at ease. My father and older brother brought their deaths upon themselves. Now that you are our Tributor, my gratitude toward you is greater than my hatred."
With that, he handed over a jade pendant carved with the character for "Yang" and a bank card.
"This is the token of a Yang Family Tributor and your salary card. We will handle the funerals for my father and brother discreetly and keep their deaths a secret. This is to protect the Yang Family's security and also save you a great deal of trouble."
Chen Dong accepted the Jade Pendant and the bank card, a trace of admiration for Yang Anyi stirring within him. 'If Yang Yushan had possessed this man's magnanimity, he never would have died.' Furthermore, all of today's contracts—including the Li Group's valuation and the budget for the capital transfer—were Yang Anyi's handiwork.
As the Yang Family still had many matters to attend to, the two of them soon bid farewell to Chen Dong and left the Li Group.
Chen Dong toyed with the Jade Pendant. After learning about the benefits, he decided that being a Tributor wasn't bad at all. Not only was there a salary of one hundred million a year, but he could also leverage some of the Yang Family's manpower and resources. He normally wouldn't have to do anything, except confront any Grandmaster-level enemies the Yang Family might face and occasionally serve as a figurehead. And right now, the Yang Family didn't need him to be a figurehead. As long as no one knew Yang Yushan and his son were dead, he wouldn't have to do a thing.
Meanwhile, at the Sun Family Manor, Huang Biehe and Sun Yuanliang sat drinking tea in the main hall, waiting for news of the five major banks calling in the Li Group's debts.
Huang Biehe set down his teacup and said with admiration, "Patriarch Sun, your move was brilliant. You've caught the Li Group completely off guard. If they can't raise the funds, they'll have no choice but to declare bankruptcy! Without the Li Group, the Li Family will be ours to crush as we please."
Sun Yuanliang lifted his teacup, pursed his lips to blow the steam from its surface, and took a delicate sip before speaking slowly. "The insignificant Li Family is nothing to be feared. Bie He, rest assured. As soon as the Li Family declares bankruptcy and my second brother comes out of his seclusion, I'll have him accompany you. You can use avenging your son as a pretext to slaughter their entire family."
Admiration filled Huang Biehe's gaunt features as he laid on the flattery. "Patriarch Sun, you are truly resourceful and wise beyond compare! Bie He's great revenge depends entirely on you!"
Sun Yuanliang beamed with pride and laughed heartily. "Bie He, you flatter me, you flatter me!"
Just then, Huang Biehe's secretary, Huang Yongfeng, burst in, shouting, "Patriarch, it's terrible! Something awful has happened..." He rushed through the door with a panicked expression and tripped over the high threshold.
Huang Biehe's face instantly darkened. He shot the man a glare. "What are you screaming about? This is the Sun Family Manor! Your impudence will not be tolerated here!"
A trace of displeasure also crossed Sun Yuanliang's face.
"Patriarch, something really has happened!" Huang Yongfeng said, pulling out his phone and handing it to Huang Biehe. "Patriarch, look! Xuyang Investment just poured twenty billion into the Li Clan! It's all over the Jiangzhou headlines!"
"What?" Huang Biehe and Sun Yuanliang exclaimed in shock.
Taking the phone, the two men huddled together, their heads close as they stared at the small screen.
The top headline read: "Xuyang Investment Pours 20 Billion into Li Group."
Other headlines followed suit: "Investment Qilin Strikes Again, Placing Heavy Bets on Li Group."
"Li Group Poised for a Resurgence."
"Yang Anyi Drops 20 Billion on Li Group—The Secret Behind the Move."
The expressions on both men's faces turned impossibly grim. How could the Yang Family suddenly get involved?
Now that the Yang and Li Families had formed an alliance, the Li Group would be much harder to deal with.
Huang Biehe's eyes flickered. "With this twenty-billion investment, our plan is unlikely to succeed. Patriarch Sun, what should we do now?"
Sun Yuanliang snarled, "Damn that Yang Family!"
He stroked his teacup, then set it down heavily. "This plan may have failed, but I have another," he said slowly. "No one knows this, but I once did a great favor for Liu Qi, the 'King of Materials.' I'll have him refuse to sell them any supplies. If the Li Family can't get so much as a single bag of cement or a cubic meter of sand, let's see them try to build anything. So what if the Yang Family's 'Qilin' is backing them? As long as their project remains unfinished, they'll bleed money until they go under, no matter how much they have!"
Huang Biehe's eyes lit up. "Brilliant!" he praised. "Truly brilliant! If the project isn't completed by the deadline, the Li Clan's reputation will be ruined! It'll only be a matter of time before the Li Group is destroyed."
