Chapter 104 - 79: Star Gate
Lin Yi stuck close to the Public Security Bureau squad, rushing to the South City gate at top speed.
By the time they arrived, the gate was already closed.
Outside the city walls, the deafening sounds of cannon fire and monstrous roars threatened to rupture their eardrums.
At the base of the South City Wall, a temporary command post had been constructed from sandbags and alloy plates. It was brightly lit, with figures bustling about inside.
Numerous commanders hurried in and out, barking orders.
At the same time, many Martial Artists from within the city had arrived as reinforcements, awaiting their orders.
The Third Grade captain from the Public Security Bureau led Lin Yi and the others to the entrance. He shouted to a middle-aged officer with a major’s insignia on his shoulder and chiseled features:
"Reporting! Public Security Bureau reinforcements have arrived!"
The major swept his gaze over the group. Without a single wasted word, he issued his command:
"This is an emergency! Register your official Martial Artist serial numbers and await orders. As soon as you receive them, get on that wall and help repel the monsters trying to scale it! Remember, this wall is Yang City’s lifeline—we can’t give a single inch!"
"Yes, sir!"
Lin Yi and the others acknowledged the order with grim determination.
They turned and entered their official Martial Artist serial numbers on a machine next to the command post.
A moment later, an official directive from Yang City came through on Lin Yi’s communicator.
"Martial Artist Lin Yi, you have been assigned to the defensive line at the South District wall, Sector 8-11. Coordinates have been sent to your personal terminal. Ascend the wall immediately and engage the enemy!"
The moment he received his orders, Lin Yi didn’t hesitate. He gripped his Owl Dragon Spear and turned to go.
He sprinted up the steep rampart leading to the top of the wall.
The frigid wind assaulted his senses, thick with the stench of gunpowder and blood. Beneath his feet, the city wall trembled with the constant roar of the Energy Cannons.
When he finally set foot on the wide ramparts of Sector 8-11, the sight before him made his scalp crawl.
He drew a sharp breath, his heart seizing in his chest at the horrifying, overwhelming vista.
Beyond the walls of South City, the vast wilderness had become a field of slaughter.
As far as the eye could see, there was nothing but a black, writhing mass—the Pigman army.
They swarmed like a boundless tide, shrieking and roaring as they furiously assaulted the towering walls.
Their numbers were so great, far exceeding anything Lin Yi had ever imagined.
Tens of thousands?
Hundreds of thousands?
There was no end in sight.
Even the distant horizon was blotted out by that hopeless expanse of black.
On the wall, rows of Energy Cannon barrels, each as wide as a large bowl, emitted a constant, deep hum.
Each time their muzzles flared with a blinding blue light, a massive Energy Beam shot forth, crashing into the surging tide of monsters.
With each deafening explosion, a searing shockwave tore through the horde. Dozens, even hundreds, of Pigmen were instantly ripped to shreds and blasted into the air, their charred limbs raining down.
And yet, the horrifying void carved out by the cannons would last only a few seconds before being swallowed by the even more ferocious black tide from behind, as if it had never been there at all.
Closer to the wall, a mountain of monster corpses had already formed at its base.
The next wave of Pigmen clambered over the bodies of their fallen, wielding crude but deadly stone axes, Bone Staffs, and even shoddily forged iron weapons. They dug their claws into the cracks between the stones, swarming up the wall like maggots on a corpse.
Along the battlements, the Martial Artists on every section of the wall were deep in a killing frenzy, their eyes bloodshot. The flash of blades and Light Sabers mingled with their furious roars and the agonized shrieks of monsters.
In a storm of blood and gore, the bodies of slain monsters constantly plummeted from above, crashing onto the growing mountain of corpses below.
"ROAR!"
A savage roar from right beside him snapped Lin Yi out of his stupor.
At the edge of a battlement in his assigned Sector 8-11, an exceptionally strong Pigman with jutting tusks had just hauled itself over the top.
The creature was clad in crude leather armor. It swung a stone axe, which whistled through the air, viciously chopping down at a young Martial Artist nearby. The youth had just slain another monster and was clearly exhausted.
The young Martial Artist was clearly spent and couldn’t dodge in time. It looked as though he was about to be cleaved in two.
In that critical moment, Lin Yi’s eyes went cold. He exploded forward, his body shooting out like an arrow released from its bow!
"Insolent beast!"
With a low growl, Lin Yi lunged. His Owl Dragon Long Spear shot out like a venomous dragon striking from its lair, moving second but landing first.
HUM!
The shaft of the spear vibrated as he instantly channeled his First Grade Wave Intent into the attack.
Instead of aiming for the Pigman’s vitals, he directed the spearhead with its powerful, vibrating force, striking the flat side of the stone axe with pinpoint accuracy.
"CLANG!"
A piercing clang of metal on stone rang out!
The stone axe was violently knocked aside by the immense force imbued with Wave Intent.
The sudden, explosive force also sent the massive Pigman stumbling, leaving it wide open.
The young Martial Artist, having escaped death, was still in shock.
Without a moment’s pause, Lin Yi flicked his wrist, and the long spear traced a cold arc through the air.
PSHH!
The razor-sharp tip of the Owl Dragon Spear easily pierced the Pigman’s comparatively soft throat, pinning its massive body to the wall behind it.
Foul blood sprayed out.
He then gave the spear a powerful flick.
The Pigman’s enormous body was sent flying like a discarded sack, tumbling off the wall to crash into the teeming horde of monsters below.
"Th... thank you!"
The young Martial Artist gasped his thanks, his voice trembling.
"Stay sharp! Don’t lose focus!"
Lin Yi didn’t turn around. His eyes, sharp as a falcon’s, scanned the battlements, his Spirit completely focused.
A thought crossed his mind.
His Mosquito Avatar, completely invisible, was already hovering silently in the air just outside the wall.
He fully activated his LV8 Tracking skill.
’These damned beasts, where in the hell did they crawl out from? There’s no end to them!’
’There’s absolutely nowhere in the territory surrounding Yang City that could hide an army of this size without being detected by the authorities beforehand!’
