Chapter 102 - 78: Monster Civilization
The beast’s scarlet eyes remained frozen in horror and bewilderment, even in death.
"Hoo..."
Lin Yi slowly withdrew his long spear, flicking away the viscous beast blood from its tip. He glanced at the massive corpse on the ground as its life rapidly faded.
He felt no relief from the quick kill.
In fact, the Pigman’s strange behavior had left him feeling deeply unsettled.
"I can’t believe it. This thing looked terrifying, but it was all bark and no bite."
Luo Qian cautiously approached, Energy Pistol in hand. Only after confirming the Pigman was dead did he let out a sigh of relief.
Just then, the sound of rapid, orderly footsteps approached, growing louder.
"Move! This way! Hold formation! Civilians, fall back to the air-raid shelters! If you find a target, kill on sight!"
A squad in the black uniforms of the Public Security Bureau, led by a Third-Grade Martial Artist, was advancing down the street, rapidly clearing out monsters and evacuating civilians as they pushed toward the South City Gate.
They had clearly seen Lin Yi’s clean takedown of the Pigman and the rescue of the civilians.
The leading Third-Grade Martial Artist, whose epaulets identified him as a captain, swept his sharp gaze over Lin Yi and his blood-stained spear. He glanced at the Pigman’s corpse on the ground, a flicker of appreciation in his eyes that was quickly replaced by a deeper solemnity.
He rushed over to Lin Yi, his eyes scanning the surroundings vigilantly as he spoke rapidly.
"Kid! Nice moves! What’s your unit?"
"Yang City No. 1 High School! Lin Yi!"
Lin Yi straightened his back and replied loudly.
"Good! Lin Yi, listen up!"
The Public Security Bureau captain’s voice was urgent, laced with a tone of command that tolerated no dissent.
"The defensive line in South City is critical! A massive enemy force has launched a surprise attack, and the front line is strained! I’m issuing a wartime emergency draft! All available Martial Artists in the vicinity with strength to spare are to move out immediately! Clear any small fry that have infiltrated along the way and provide full-speed support to the South City front line!"
Before Lin Yi even had a chance to respond, the captain gave a sharp wave of his hand. He led the battle-hardened squad behind him, and they shot forward like an arrow loosed from a bow, charging back toward South City, where deafening explosions roared and firelight painted half the sky red.
The ceaseless roar of explosions signified that the battle there was a brutal, meat-grinding war of attrition.
Lin Yi’s heart clenched. A cold fighting spirit instantly surged through him.
Without a moment’s hesitation, he replied in a low voice, "Understood!"
Reinforcing the front line had been his goal all along. Now, it was his undeniable duty.
"Luo!" Lin Yi snapped his head around, his gaze locking onto Luo Qian with lightning intensity. His tone was decisive. "Get this mother and son to the safe zone, now! Then find a place to hide!"
The rear areas had already been swept multiple times by the Public Security Bureau and were relatively safe. Luo Qian should have no trouble on the way.
The battlefield ahead was a meat grinder—far too dangerous. Luo Qian wasn’t even a Martial Artist; Lin Yi couldn’t possibly let him risk it.
"What about you?" Luo Qian asked anxiously, grabbing Lin Yi’s arm.
"I’m going to the front!" Lin Yi’s gaze fell on South City, his eyes betraying no fear.
’A chaotic battlefield and powerful enemies... the perfect whetstone to temper myself and seek a breakthrough!’
"But—" Luo Qian started to say more.
"That’s an order! Protect yourself!" Lin Yi cut him off, his tone leaving no room for argument.
He clapped Luo Qian on the shoulder, a thousand unspoken words passing between them.
Saying no more, he raised his Owl Dragon Spear and shot off like an arrow, unhesitatingly chasing after the Public Security Bureau squad as it disappeared around the corner.
His figure quickly vanished into the swirling smoke and firelight.
Luo Qian stared in the direction Lin Yi had gone, then looked down at the heavy Energy Gun in his hand and the terrified mother and son beside him. He stomped his foot in frustration. "Damn it! Lin Yi, you crazy bastard! You better come back alive!"
Gritting his teeth, he helped the weak woman to her feet, picked up the crying child, and began a difficult retreat toward the relative safety of the rear.
He knew he had no place in the fight to come.
The only thing he could do was trust Lin Yi and complete the mission he’d been given.
...
Lin Yi moved with incredible speed. Within a few breaths, he had caught up to the Public Security Bureau squad, falling into place at their flank and running abreast of the formidable captain.
The wind howled in his ears, mixed with the thunder of distant artillery.
While maintaining his rapid pace, Lin Yi asked the captain in a low voice,
"Sir! Where did these enemies come from? What force is attacking Yang City?"
"Don’t know! We haven’t received specific intel yet! It was too sudden!"
The captain spoke rapidly, his voice slightly breathless from the sprint.
He yelled without looking back,
"This is no time for questions! The front line is under immense pressure! The guys in the City Defense Force are about to break! We have to get there as fast as we can to reinforce them! We absolutely, under no circumstances, can allow the enemy to breach the city in force! If that happens, it’s game over for all of us!"
A chill went down Lin Yi’s spine.
He instantly understood the gravity of the situation.
He immediately suppressed his questions and didn’t ask another word.
Right now, every second was a matter of life and death.
He kept pace with the elite Public Security Bureau squad, pushing his speed to its absolute limit as they raced like the wind toward the South City Gate.
The closer they got to South City, the thicker and more pungent the stench of smoke and blood in the air became.
The deafening roar of battle battered his eardrums like physical shockwaves.
The very ground trembled beneath their feet.
Clearly, the main City Defense Force was locked in a life-or-death struggle with the enemy on the South City Wall.
But despite this.
