Chapter 31: The Tides of Chaos

## Chapter 31: The Tides of Chaos

The massive lecture hall, once a place of academic pursuit, had been transformed into a slaughterhouse. Desks were splintered, chairs lay overturned, and the tiered seating provided a treacherous, uneven battleground. At the front of the room, where the professor's podium used to be, the rift pulsated with an irregular, sickly rhythm

Michael stood near the center of the monster main gathering area, his boots slipping slightly on the slick, stone floor. The wooden shaft he held in his hands was painted with blood.

While fighting he was listening to the desperate shouts of the students around him, the heavy thuds of bodies hitting the ground, and the guttural shrieks of the beasts. Every time he turned to strike, he had to trust that his companions were holding their ground behind him.

"Jakob, cover the left side!" Michael shouted, his voice hoarse and raw from screaming over the din of battle. "They’re massing near the pillars!"

Jakob didn't reply, but Michael heard the frantic scraping of boots against stone as the other man charged forward. Jakob was a whirlwind of unrefined aggression. He didn't have a grand strategy; he had a spear, adrenaline, a primal desire to survive and an explosive talent. Michael envied that simplicity for a split second before a creature lunged at him from the dark periphery.

Michael pivoted, the movement driven by pure instinct rather than conscious thought. He thrust his spear forward, aiming for the thickest part of its body. The iron tip found a gap in the monster’s leathery hide, sinking deep into a dense cluster of muscle. The creature shrieked, a sound like tearing metal, and thrashed violently, its jagged claws scraping against Michael. Michael used the other end of his spear to parry the claw attack. He shoved backward, using his body weight to force the beast off balance. He ripped the spear free with a sickening squelch and finished it with a sharp, downward strike right through the back of its neck, pinning it to the floor until it stopped twitching.

He took a split second to scan the line. The group was stretched terrifyingly thin. Sophie was nearby, her face pale and streaked with dirt, frantically brandishing her spear. She was just a student, thrust into this nightmare without warning. She had no special combat ability, relying entirely on her agility and the long reach of her weapon to keep the snapping jaws at bay. Michael watched her dart out of the way of a sweeping limb, her movements desperate and jagged. She was exhausted, her chest heaving with every breath, but she refused to step back.

The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

"Keep the formation tight!" Michael yelled, stepping forward to intercept a beast that tried to slip past her. "Don't let them split us up! Thrust and recover! Don't get too far ahead!"

The battle was a brutal, repetitive cycle: stab, brace, dodge, and breathe. Every kill was a minor victory bought with sweat, lactic acid, and the constant risk of being overwhelmed. The monsters seemed countless, their numbers endless.

Michael felt his own pulse thundering in his ears like a war drum. His muscles were beginning to ache with a deep, bone-weary fatigue that threatened to slow his reactions. Every thrust of the spear sent shockwaves up his arms. He caught another glimpse of Jakob—the man was panting heavily, his clothes soaked in dark fluids. Jakob’s spear was nicked and dulled from striking bone, yet he continued to fight with a ferocity that defied his physical limits. Michael couldn't tell if Jakob was fueled by courage or the sheer, blinding terror of knowing that stopping meant death.

"Focus on the narrow gap between the benches!" Michael yelled, repositioning himself to block a new surge of creatures scrambling over the destroyed furniture. "Force them through one at a time!"

For a moment, it worked. The narrow path between the destroyed lecture rows forced the beasts to approach one by one. But the pressure was immense. To his right, he saw one of the newer students—a boy whose name he couldn't even remember—stumble backward as his spear tip caught in a monster's ribcage. The boy tugged frantically, panic washing over his face, but the weapon was stuck fast in the dense bone.

Before Michael could close the distance, a second beast leaped over the first. The boy shouted with a desperate, high-pitched voice. In the next moment something magical occurred. The second monster collided with the first monster, defying physics, and saved the new student who most likely already gave up on life.

*That must have been David!* thought Michael as he called out "Hurry! Kill them!“ The young man realized what happened and immediately thrust his spear. Michael saw that the new fighter could kill one of the monsters but he couldn’t keep observing the young mans situation.

"Michael, behind you!" Sophie’s voice broke through his tunnel vision.

He didn't turn to look. He spun on his heel, dropping his center of gravity, and drove the butt of his spear backward. It connected with something hard—a jawbone, perhaps—and gave him the fraction of a second he needed to reverse his grip and thrust the blade up into the creature's throat.

He wiped sweat and blood from his eyes. The situation was getting more dangerous with every second. He had to do something. He had to change how they fought, or they would all be ground into dust.

"Jakob! Stop pushing forward!" Michael screamed over the roar of the horde. "We've pushed too far! Pull back to the back wall! Now!"

Jakob hesitated, his spear raised for another strike, his eyes wild and unfocused. He looked at Michael, breathing in ragged gasps, the bloodlust slowly receding from his gaze. Finally, he nodded, snapping out of his battle trance.

"Fall back! Everyone, step back!" Michael bellowed.

The group began to shuffle backward, a slow, grueling retreat, step by step, moving out of the open floor and toward the rear wall. They kept their spears pointed outward in every direction as they retreated.
