Chapter 105: Identity Disorder
Ni Mengxue patted Meng Xiaoni’s shoulder secretly.
But outwardly, she put on an expression of reluctance. "I’m not willing to pay that much. Let them die."
Meng Xiaoni remained calm. He had already sensed Ni Mengxue’s secret signal.
Meanwhile, Mo Beichan heaved a sigh of relief.
Just as he was about to suggest a private exchange, Ni Mengxue suddenly changed her expression.
"I’m willing to provide 125,000 kilograms of rice. But what guarantees do I have that you won’t come back here again? And what guarantee is there that they won’t increase the price again?"
She rolled her eyes and continued, deliberately behaving like the old Ni Mengxue.
"You’ll obediently leave with me and stop arguing about that so-called stolen credit, right?"
Mo Beichan froze. That strange change in her personality made him feel as though he had seen something similar before.
’What was that condition called?’
His eyes suddenly widened. ’Dissociative identity disorder.’
That had to be it.
Perhaps Ni Mengxue really was suffering from some kind of personality disorder. The woman he had met at the entrance before seemed so much different from the real Ni Mengxue, and only now did he think she resembled her past self.
And suddenly, everything made sense. His eyes brightened as he eagerly waited for Meng Xiaoni’s response.
As long as Meng Xiaoni agreed, Mo Beichan would receive 125,000 kilograms of rice and have an answer to give Su Yao. More importantly, Meng Xiaoni would no longer compete with him over the stolen research credit.
Meng Xiaoni, on the other hand, decided to play along. Unfortunately, he was terrible at acting.
He simply lowered his head. He didn’t say much, but his expression and reaction were enough to make everyone believe he had been defeated.
Whispers immediately spread through the crowd.
"See? Ni Mengxue hasn’t changed at all."
"She’s still the same spoiled woman she was before."
Meng Xiaoni clenched his fists.
For some reason, he wanted to tell them the truth... that Ni Mengxue wasn’t like that anymore. But he held himself back for the sake of his family.
He looked toward them.
His father, mother, two brothers, and sister were all tied to wooden poles on the execution platform. Their faces were haggard, their bodies emaciated, and most of them were unconscious. They had clearly suffered tremendously during the past four years.
’They won’t survive much longer.’
Despair briefly filled Meng Xiaoni’s heart. Seeing his reaction, Mo Beichan spoke calmly.
"I won’t increase the price any further. As long as you’re willing to pay the amount, your family will be released."
Ni Mengxue frowned. "Even if that’s the case, I won’t receive anything from it."
Mo Beichan clenched his fists. ’She really knows how to take advantage of every situation.’
Just as his irritation toward the old Ni Mengxue was about to surface again, Meng Xiaoni spoke softly. "I’m willing to become your slave if you agree."
Ni Mengxue was slightly stunned. She knew perfectly well that this was only an act, yet a strange happiness bubbled inside her.
’I’m definitely going to tease him about this later.’
She coughed lightly. "All right. Then I’ll accept those terms."
She waved her hand. In the next instant, bags of rice appeared out of thin air. The crowd gasped.
125,000 kilograms of pure rice filled the surrounding space. Some people’s eyes immediately filled with greed.
Those who had previously regarded Ni Mengxue as a useless pauper suddenly changed their minds.
’Being Ni Mengxue’s husband doesn’t seem so bad after all.’
A red-haired man suddenly rushed out from the crowd and dropped to his knees before her.
"Heroine, please take me as your husband! I’ll serve you devotedly. I’ll never look at another woman. I swear!"
He slammed his forehead against the ground. Ni Mengxue didn’t even spare him a glance.
The man was completely ordinary-looking, and she had no interest in him... or anyone else.
Her attention remained on her own husband. Meanwhile, Mo Beichan motioned for his people to begin counting the bags of rice.
He then sauntered over to Ni Mengxue with a smile.
"Miss Ni, you’re giving away such a huge amount of rice. I’m starting to wonder where it came from."
Ni Mengxue gave him a flirtatious smile. "If Mr. Mo is willing to become my husband, I’ll certainly tell you where this rice came from."
She even winked at him. Mo Beichan felt thoroughly disgusted.
He was now even more convinced that Ni Mengxue had some kind of personality disorder.
He turned toward Meng Xiaoni and suddenly felt a trace of pity for him.
Although Meng Xiaoni had overshadowed him during the peak of their youth, Mo Beichan couldn’t deny that this man’s current life was miserable.
With that thought, he smiled at Ni Mengxue. "I’m not interested. I’ll take my leave first."
He turned and walked away in an unusually good mood.
His expression had become much calmer.
Once the rice had been counted and verified, all of Meng Xiaoni’s family members were released.
However, no one stepped forward to carry them.
Ni Mengxue, meanwhile, simply walked away arrogantly, as though she couldn’t be bothered with the aftermath.
Fortunately, one of Lu Yucai’s subordinates quickly rushed forward and began helping Meng Xiaoni carry his family members.
Among them, Mrs. Meng had remained conscious enough to witness everything.
Her eyes were half-open as she stared at Ni Mengxue’s retreating figure.
