Chapter 25: Tear Open the Sky
“W-what is that?” Vivi questioned.
Her scepter fell to her side as she and the others gawked at the sight before them, their fight cut short by the sudden swell in power from the tear.
The sliver of light tore through the air, clawing at the space around it, even the ceiling giving way to its grip. Beyond it was a vast wilderness. The portal seemed to emerge to the top of a tower, over looking verdant fields, a sprawling city slumbering in the distance, a castle at its heart, forests flanking its stern walls. It was as if looking out upon a world from a fairy tale, rendered unto reality by the tear’s might.
“Ah, how I’ve longed for this moment,” Zeus said, a victorious grin on his face. He looked down upon the girls who gazed upon the frightening majesty of the portal with horror and awe. “For your exquisite performance, I shall reward you with the truth. Once upon a time, the world was a vast and diverse place, ripe with the divine might of mana. Mana, created by gods and crafted by the fae who gave shape to the world’s many creatures who cultivated it and utilized it for their own prosperity. It was an orderly state of things. Gods filled the world with mana, people used it for magic, and in turn they paid tribute to us as was their nature.
“However, over time, the mortals that filled the world became arrogant and selfish. As the world became saturated with mana, and the ecosystem adapted to recycle spent mana, the mortals foolishly believed they no longer needed us and abandoned pantheon after pantheon. Of course, we didn’t truly need them, and we were ready to teach them their place. That was when an upstart deity appeared. Championing a knight wielding a so called divine blade, This new god sought to pillage our disloyal followers and spouted nonsense of being the one and only true god,” Zeus spat. “It was then that the god and his army began a bloody campaign, slaughtering his betters, and stealing our power to make up for his empty boasts.
“Unfortunately, I cannot attest to what happened afterwards. My memories may be more complete than those poor excuses who reincarnated in mortal bodies, but even I am unable to know what transpired after my… inconvenient defeat. But I assume someone finally knocked him down a peg leading to our resurrection in this world. Meaning all I’ll need to do is go up to his worthless little throne and take him out for good.”
“And how what makes you think you won’t just get your ass beat again?” scoffed Carmen. “Sounds like a bold assumption after you got killed last time. How do you know he’s not even stronger now?”
Zeus chuckled. “I’m impressed. Not by your petulant question, but by your audacity. Truly, what the world has come to for a little girl like you to try questioning a god.”
“Why you…!”
“I suppose I can answer your question though. To put it simply, deities, such as myself, can sense each other to a degree. The stronger the divinity, the easier it is to feel them. Before I perished, that upstart was strong enough to feel from half the continent over, and yet, even with the portal being so close to his base of operations, his power is nearly entirely absent. In other words, he’s certainly weaker than he was back then. Likely a result of our resurrection.”
“Why are you telling us all of this?” Ichika questioned. “I thought we were beneath you or whatever?”
Zeus smirked as he readied an answer. In that instant, as Vivi repeated Ichika’s question to herself, she gasped and looked towards Tiamat and her grandmother noticing them trembling and panting. “Grandma! Tia!” she called out, rushing to them. Zeus sighed and raised his finger towards the girl.
Lightning shot out from the other side of the portal and into the room towards the young succubus, a thunderous boom reverberating through the room. Vivi looked to her side and saw Annie and Carmen both taking the blow for her.
“Bastard was trying to distract us,” Annie grumbled.
“Vivi! Get to them!” Carmen called out.
Vivi nodded as she hurriedly rushed to the side of the two goddesses. Another volley of lightning came at her, this time being met by a jet of water, canceling it out. Yet another round of lightning was deflected by a wall of ice that protruded from the ground as she made it to their side. “Are you okay? What’s happening?” she asked.
“Zeus’s drawn in enough power to siphon our energy,” Lilith explained as huffed. “I can feel Riri’s magic flowing in through the machines in here. Zeus must’ve set up a trap to catch her off guard.”
“Dammit, I should’ve seen this coming,” Tiamat grumbled. “I knew he was a cunning asshole, and I still underestimated him.”
“Then, maybe if we cut off the flow of energy from Riri, then…”
“It’s too late for that,” Tiamat stated. “He’s already drawn in enough mana to expand his range to us, and he’s getting stronger.” She grimaced as her claws dug into the ground, her breath growing heavier.
“And if that weren’t enough, now he’s drawing mana in from the other world too,” Lilith groused as she watched the clouds in the foreign skies crackle with lightning. “Dammit, if I just listened to Ami...”
“We can’t give up!” Vivi protested. “There has to be a way to…” She grumbled to herself as she tried to think of a way. She then recalled her fight in Marina and Tiamat’s hearts. Zeus had implanted a shade of himself, a weaker version they could defeat. “Maybe if I use my powers to connect with your hearts, then maybe.”
“You can’t!” Lilith croaked. “You might get hurt. If I let you… Mary would never forgive me.”
“I’m not losing you!” Vivi argued. “We can do it, we-”
“This isn’t like last time,” Tiamat panted. “He’s stronger now, and his spells are too strong for you.”
“But they’re not stronger than all of us!” a youthful voice chirped. The three looked to their side to see Wisp fluttering next to them.
“Wisp? You mean if we work together… But I don’t know if I can sustain all of us like that.”
“It’s okay big sis, you have me to help you!” Wisp cheered. “I was listening to him. He said fairies like me were part of why people could use magic. And thanks to Miss Carriewen, I can mess with all sorts of spells now.”
“Are fairies that strong?” Vivi asked.
“I don’t remember too much, but… she might be right, Something tells me that fairies were quite powerful in the past,” Tiamat considered. “I… think you two might be on to something,” she admitted as she gripped her head.
“No! It’s too dangerous!” Lilith protested as her hand trembled against her breast.
“Come on, Grandma, you’ve trusted me this far, right? Besides, your my grandma and my goddess. I can’t abandon you”
“Vivi…” Lilith sighed, her breath getting heavier. “I... I trust you." She mustered a smile. "I trust all of you girls. I believe in you”
“Good!” Vivi said confidently. “You ready Wisp?” She reached her hand out to the young fairy girl.
“Yeah!” the small fairy said excitedly as she took Vivi’s hand.
“Let’s finish this,” Vivi said, determination filling her voice. Her eyes began to glow, taking on a pinkish color as a pink energy began to form around her and then expanding to fill the room.
“What is…?” Zeus asked as he dodged one of Annie’s attacks. He gawked at the energy as he began to realize what was happening. “No!” he shouted angrily. He then took a deep breath and shook his head. “Fine then. I’ll just take care of you on that side.”
* * *
The veil of pink energy expanded in all directions. It was familiar, yet different than what Vivi was used to, as shimmering green streams of energy pulsed throughout, filled with a glittering shine to it. She looked to her side, noticing Wisp still holding her hand, gazing with awe on her face into the wondrous space.
“It’s so pretty!” Wisp cheered.
“It’s a little different this time though,” Vivi noted as she looked around. It was then that she noticed various lights shining in the void. Violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange, and red, forming a circle. “Those are…” She blinked. The answer came to her immediately, instantly realizing what each light meant, or rather who they were.
“Are they our goddesses?” Wisp asked.
“Most of them are,” Vivi confirmed. “Not all of them are here, but…” She pointed to the violet light. “That’s Grandma, that one’s Sue, Tiamat, Ceridwen,” she said doting the indigo, blue, and green lights with her finger. “Riri, Marina, and… I don’t know the last one… I think it might be the other new goddess, Thermia,” she finished, pointing to the yellow, orange and red lights.
“But, why are Miss Marina and Thermia here?”
“I think they’re all caught up in the spell,” Vivi considered. “I’ve never connected with this many people before. Is that your doing Wisp?”
“Hmm?” Wisp thought to herself. “Maybe, I think…” She frowned. “I just thought about wanting to help everyone when you used your magic, and I felt this power, and…”
“It’s amazing. I guess fairies really are special,” Vivi giggled, Wisp smiling in turn. “But, I guess that means…” she looked to the center of the lights, noticing a golden glow growing darker at its center. “That’s Zeus. He’s draining their power.”
“We have to stop him!” Wisp declared.
“Right! We should be able to stop him here! Let’s go!” The two flew off deeper into the void, the pink retreating as they entered golden glow’s reach. A figure quickly emerged at its center. Zeus grinned as they approached. He raised his hand towards them, lightning shooting towards them. Vivi took her scepter and twirled it in her hands, taking a deep breath. She thrust it forward, a barrier of light forming before her. As the lightning fizzled on its surface, the wings on her scepter flapped, a shadowy energy forming at their tips. She glanced to her side, Wisp flashing a grin to her as she summoned a glittering ball of energy in her own hand. The pair released their attacks, the wind pulling the shadows upon it to create a spiral of magic hurtling towards Zeus.
Zeus scoffed as he summoned Marduk’s sword and slashed at their spell, managing to cleave it in half, the energy dissipating into a shadowy mist. He chuckled as he curled his fingers to charge an attack, utilizing the mist as cover. A grin formed upon his lips as he predicted the young fae to dissipate the mist then launch another attack only for him to retaliate first. Only, the wind never came.
A strange tickle traveled up Zeus’s leg. He looked down to see the tail of a snake vanish into his pants leg. The tickle traveled up his leg and climbed his back, causing him to shiver. He reached to grab the intruder, only to be met by a sudden volley of pink magical energy. He snarled in pain as he looked to his side, seeing the young succubus’s scepter sweep through the air, the mist vanishing in the process. Before he could attack, he felt a sharp jab on his back and then something land on his head followed by another jab at his head. A small rabbit hopped through the air, its body shifting to reveal Wisp who quickly shot another bullet of magical energy at him, this time met by his attack, canceling it out.
“Heh, I’ll admit, you’re more resourceful than I gave you credit for,” Zeus snickered.
“That’s enough Zeus!” Vivi shouted. “Let them go!”
“Pitiful pathetic boys,” Zeus laughed. “You can’t stop me.”
“We’re magical GIRLS!” Wisp shouted as she unleashed a furious gust of wind at the thunder god, vicious enough to shred the man’s thick coat.
“Oh? Did I hit a nerve?” Zeus sneered. “Whelps like you are a disgrace, surrendering your power and might for such meager and frail forms.” Vivi chuckled, confusing him.
“Meager and frail, huh?” Vivi smiled to herself. “It’s funny. Before I changed, before I figured out who and what I really am, I was so unaware, of myself, of what I could do and be. I was content just stewing in my own sadness and hiding away from the world, pretending to be happy for others. But I’m not like that anymore. Being a girl makes me happy. Accepting the succubus I've become, the woman I'm growing up to be, and these feelings in my heart, it's helped me become more confident. I might be meager and frail to you, but I'm more resilient and capable than you could know.” She grinned, Zeus staring at her with a perplexed look. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, her nose filling with a particular scent which left an eager smile on her lips. "I'm not afraid of myself or these powers any more."
She opened her eyes, her blue eyes flashing red then pink then finally settling into an intense purple glow, leaving Zeus staring at her with sudden realization. “That’s right. Succubi like me feed on emotional energy. And right now, I can tell that despite your efforts to mask it, you’re scared of us and what we can do. You can pretend all you like, but I can smell it, even taste it. You’re struggling to take in all their power, leaving you vulnerable. Just like you’ve been draining their powers, I can take them back.”
“You can try, boy!” Zeus snapped. Lightning and water arced and splattered along his arm, ice forming upon his fingers, and flames beginning to flicker in his grasp. A pair of draconic wings emerged from his back as his arms swelled with muscles, tearing his clothes further. He laughed, shadows erupting from his mouth. “An arrogant brat like you can never defeat me!” He spewed, shadows streaking through the air towards Vivi.
The girl simply grinned, her purple eyes glowing brighter, culling the shadows, much to Zeus’s confusion. The shadows gathered beneath Vivi, an amount climbed upwards forming another larger shadowy pair of demonic wings at her back. “H-how!?”
“Haven’t you realized yet? Lilith is my goddess! I’m her priestess! Her powers obey me, not you!” Zeus glared at her angrily.
“So, that’s what she was up to?” he snarled. “It doesn’t matter! I’ll just kill you and take them back from you, girl!” He flinched as he realized what he said.
“And no more misgendering us, while we’re at it,” Vivi said with a wink.
“You!” he growled, his wings flapping furiously… or at least he attempted to. He grit his teeth as he noticed the young fairy girl beside her giggling, a pair of rabbit ears on her head, mocking him as he realized another power had been taken back. “Arrogant brats!” he yelled as he slammed the ground with his fist, summoning spears of ice from the ground, stretching towards them. And then they too vanished. “What!?”
“They’re not the only ones with goddesses they’re loyal to,” another voice stated. Vivi smiled as the her friends emerged from the shadows beneath her. As if in response, Zeus felt a sharp tug as various magical forces surrounding him vanished. His ice melted, his wings melted away as the water evaporated, and even his own lightning pealed away much to his horror. “Oh, and I thought I was the one stealing his thunder,” Ichika teased. “That must be quite shocking, don’t you think Carm?”
“I’ll let you get away with that one, only because it means Riri’s power is stronger than his,” Carmen commented.
“I imagine he must feel pretty depowered now,” Melody giggled.
“That one was a bit of a stretch sweetie,” Annie chuckled. “I'm glad she's not here, but if Hori were here, maybe I’d have gotten a power up too. Not that I need it to kick your ass.”
“You petulant brats! That power belongs to me!” Zeus bellowed as he released a jet of fire at them.
“Pah,” Annie scoffed as she slashed at the flames. “You have no idea what you’re doing with those flames do you!”
“Let’s put him out, just to be safe!” Melody declared as she summoned a torrent of water to extinguish the flames and drenching the god.
“And then I’ll cool him off!” Ichika joked, much to his irritation, as ice began forming, freezing him in place.
“Okay, you two really need to stop!” Carmen shouted as she ran towards Zeus. She swung her hammer, hitting him with enough force to tear him from the ice and onto the ground.
“Heh…” Zeus chuckled. “Hahahah!” He laughed. “You think you can beat me like that!? So what if you’re priestesses of those third rate goddesses! Their power will forever pale in comparison to mine! Now die!” he roared as he grabbed at Marduk’s sword, its blade coated in flame and lightning.”
“Oh, come on!” Annie groused. “He still has that here!?” she huffed before noticing a small tickle at her ear.
“I guess it is a magical sword!” Melody sighed. “And so much for Carmen taking away his lightning.”
“Maybe you can pull his lightning away again Carm,” Ichika suggested.
"I think wee have other problems to deal with first," Carmen grumbled as several shadowy figures appeared around Zeus. "Are those like the shadow Vivi mentioned back with Tia?" She glanced up, Vivi nodding in confirmation.
"Then we'll have to take care of them first," Annie declared as one of the figures dashed at her. She swung her sword at it only to be met by a shadowy copy of Marduk's sword. "Seriously!?" she muttered.
A bolt of lightning tore through the shade, dissipating it. "I've got your back!" Carmen said boldly. "Annie, we gotta get to him," she said confidently.
"You could say that," Carmen said with a wink, brushing her ear confusing Annie. She brought her fingers to her ear and then chuckled and grinned.
"Alright. Yeah. But we'll need to fight our way through these guys first," she said as shd stared down the shades. She grimaced as she realized they had begun to multiply, Zeus grinning behind them.
"That might be a problem..." Carmen grumbled.
"Leave them to us!" Ichika shouted. The two looked behind them to see Melody and Ichika side by side, mana gathering in their hands.
"Annie, Carm, move!" Melody ordered. Carmen opened her mouth to question her only for it to slam shut as Annie pulled her out of the way. "Chi!"
"Right!" Ichika answered. The two thrust their hands forward, their spells castign on top of each other. A geyser of water erupted towards the shades only to immediately freeze, forming shards of ice which pierced the growing army of shades.
"Good job sweetie!" Annie cheered. “Carm, you ready!?” she glanced at Carmen who gave her a thumbs up. “Good! Mel, Chi!”
“We'll pin him down!” Melody answered.
"Go get him!" Ichika called out.
“You brats need to learn your place!” Zeus threw his sword down, fire and lightning erupting from the ground. Carmen and Annie ran forward into the bombardment of blazing and surging energy, each using their magic to draw their element away as they continued their assault. The angered god attempted to lift his sword once more to counter their attacks, only to realize notice a pool of water at his feet which quickly froze over. He glanced up to see the mermaid and yuki-onna grinning. He snarled as he relinquished his sword in time to evade the encroaching ice from seizing him and braced himself to catch the attacks of the two girls running him down. He caught their weapons just as they threatened to cleave into him, his enhanced might resisting their onslaught.
“You really thought that this would be enough?” he cackled.
“Oh, we have a better plan!” Carmen sneered.
"Plan!?" Zeus twitched. "You brats haven't..."
“Mel, Wisp, now!” Annie called out. Zeus stared at the mermaid and fairy suspiciously when he noticed a glow at his feet. He looked down to see a trail of water cutting away at the ice, forming an intricate symbol beneath him, the lines beginning to give off a green glow.
“W-when did... W-what?”
“You said it yourself,” said Annie. “Fairies helped harness magic right? You glossed over it, but their power can compete with yours, can’t they?” Zeus trembled with anger.
“What is the meaning of this!?”
“You’ve been trying to steal our goddesses’ powers. Well guess what, we’re taking them back, and then some,” another voice whispered in Zeus’s ear. Instantly he realized his error as he recognized the hushed tone of wind magic. He turned his head to find Vivi beside him grinning knowingly. “Using my powers as a succubus and our contracts, we’re going take their powers back.
“We might not have contracts with Marina and Thermia, but our contracts with Athena and Hori are close enough, don’t you think,” Annie chuckled as she kept him pinned with her blade bearing down upon him.
“Y-you…” Zeus grumbled.
“And guess what, we have a lightning goddess on our side too,” Carmen chuckled darkly. Her hammer forced him lower to the ground as he quaked with fury.
“Y-you can’t…”
“You’ve hurt enough people, Zeus. We’re not letting you hurt anyone again!” Vivi declared as her shadowy pair of wings curled upon and enveloped the group, her hands holding his head in place.
“No! You can’t do this to me! I’m superior to all of you! You have no right to oppose a god! You-”
“Gods may exist in our world,” Vivi cut him off. “But the world belongs to all of us, not just you!” she proclaimed.
“NOOOO!” Zeus screamed as her wings closed in, a bright light streaming through the final few openings as they vanished.
Moments later, the pink mist retracted, its mission accomplished.
* * *
A thud echoed through the room as Zeus collided with the ground. He scrambled to his feet and glared at the girls, each of them processing the return of the world around them. He chuckled as he set eyes on his prize and dashed towards her. Melody flinched as the god grabbed at her, channeling his lightning to his hand. The mermaid chuckled as she grabbed at his bare hand and reality dawned upon him.
Melody held him, using her magic to rise off the ground as gravity asserted itself, dragging Zeus down, leaving him dangling in the air.
“You despicable whores! How dare you! You have no right! I am above you! You hear me!”
Melody glanced down, ignoring Zeus’s vapid barking. At the tip of her tail stood a woman she’d only briefly glimpsed earlier during the battle, a woman with long red hair whom resembled her girlfriend in a handful of ways, only smaller and with more defined features, including her lean arms and sharp face. In many ways, she seemed like power incarnated into womanly form, save her expression. Sad, almost apologetic, with a deep frown. She held out her arms and nodded at her. Melody sighed, choosing to leave her words aside for the moment, and let the man go, Zeus falling into Thermia’s arms.
“Y-you…!” he growled as she set him down. “You ungrateful-” She delivered a swift kick, her boot crashing into the god’s groin, causing him to go silent and whining in pain.
“Be grateful, Zeus.” Thermia stated as she let him collapse on the ground. “I have every desire to end you right here and now. You’d deserve it, after everything you’ve done… almost.” Zeus jolted with pain as he mustered a glare at the goddess. “But no. I’m not going to let the rage you kindled in me to fester anymore. And besides,” she chuckled, “what better punishment is there, than letting you watch as the gods of this word willingly let go of our supremacy over humanity.”
“You, are not one of us…” he growled.
“She’s more of a deity now than you are,” Tiamat rebuked him as she approached alongside Lilith.
“Unfortunately, I can tell the girls failed to completely prune your divinity,” Lilith lamented. “But I imagine that it’ll take quite some time for you to regain any form of power again. And even then, you’ll be lucky to be as powerful as a demi-god.”
“You vile demon! This is all your fault!” Zeus seethed.
Lilith giggled as she glanced at the girls assembling behind her. “You can say that again. These girls have been my proudest accomplishment. Well aside from being a mother that is,” she chuckled, her wings flapping triumphantly as her tail wiggled happily. She faced the girls and smiled. “You girls did amazing. Now let’s head home.”
