Chapter 35 - Magic.

[Chapter Size: 3100 Words.]

---------------------------------------

Third Person POV

North, 101 AC.

---------------------------------------

Jon's feat against the monstrous bear had spread throughout the North over the following weeks, exactly as everyone suspected, and many began to know him through the story of the boy who defeated a monster using only a bow, arrows, and running through the forest on his wolf.

A ballad had been created in his honor, though it was somewhat exaggerated. He had not given the details of what had truly happened in that forest, but people assumed things and even twisted what they heard from those to whom Jon had told his story.

The ballad was played in the taverns of the North, as well as at some banquets, where it could already be heard. The North was not known for glorifying events such as knights being victorious in tournaments, like in the South. But the story of a child facing a bear seemed quite thrilling to the northern folk.

Of course, there was still some skepticism about a boy of ten name days having slaughtered a monstrous bear, but there were too many witnesses. Besides that, the creature's body had been displayed to hundreds of people before being put to use, and the monster's head could now be found in the hall of Winterfell.

Because of that, his story seemed far more believable than the doubts of some people.

Jon, despite the small fame he was beginning to gain in the North — fame that had already been growing for some years due to him being the only living person bonded to the only direwolf seen in hundreds of years — did not seem to care much about it.

He remained focused on his activities within the castle, living alongside the Stark family and his grandmother in Wintertown.

The matter of the bear ended up being left behind over the following moons, and Jon continued focusing on his routine, divided between theoretical knowledge and military training.

101 AC had now begun across all of Westeros.

But something was changing...

As he grew older, Jon realized that his dreams were intensifying even further, and he was beginning to discover certain gifts he had not possessed before.

The visions became longer, heavier, and more detailed, almost forming ancient memories within his mind.

And there were still many unanswered questions.

He knew that his grandmother (Lyarra) had been observing him more closely lately, not only because he had killed a bear, but also because of what she had heard from his parents. They had told Lyarra many things about the animals, the gifts, and Jon's dreams that the Starks suspected but did not fully understand, given the strangeness surrounding the boy.

She managed to convince them because she also revealed some things that the boy himself had told her.

Now, Jon found himself on a night two moons after the incident.

Jon still did not understand why. For some reason, that night he kept thinking about it.

Not only because it had been two moons since those events.

His father had recovered well, mainly because the bite had not been that deep. The bear had stopped precisely at the moment it tried to crush Garen's arm.

He recovered quickly and was already returning to hunting and taking care of the farm once again.

Now, without the bear in the region, everything seemed much safer.

At the same time Jon's thoughts revolved around the events and sequence of the past two moons, Jon fell asleep that night and had a dream unlike all the others.

Once again, he was living another life.

He was inside the body of some animal.

And that creature was larger than any other he had ever felt himself inhabiting through its eyes. The sensation of feeling its entire gigantic body was crystal clear to him.

And all he saw was darkness and felt stifling heat.

The smell of burnt flesh and bones invaded his nostrils while his eyes observed the surroundings through the gloom, revealing rocks around him.

He was inside a cave.

He could feel the enormous weight of his body even more as he slowly raised his neck.

His eyes adjusted easily to the darkness, allowing him to see more and more details.

There were bones scattered everywhere.

By their shapes, he could recognize the remains of oxen and other animals.

And by the way he saw those bones so far beneath him, Jon realized something immediately.

The creature he inhabited was not merely large.

It was immense.

Feeling that body move was strange, he had no front paws, they were wings! Like a bat if Jon had to guess better, but far larger!

Jon had no control, just as had happened in other experiences where he truly entered the minds of random animals during his dreams. He merely observed through the creature's eyes as it went about its actions.

The creature crossed the cave, making the ground tremble with every step.

Then they moved toward the cave's entrance. From there, he could see stars in the sky and also feel the sea breeze.

When the creature stepped outside, Jon saw the enormous body rise as monstrous wings spread open.

The next instant, they beat powerfully.

And then it took flight.

He was flying.

He was inside a... dragon. That was obvious.

A black dragon that blended easily with the darkness among the stars in the sky. 3

The creature flew over an inhabited island. Jon could see a massive castle and several villages below, fishing villages, observing small lights scattered through the darkness.

The dragon seemed irritated. Jon could feel that clearly.

It was not merely the natural feeling of a creature flying during the night. There was rage and irritation inside that colossal mind. It almost seemed to feel that its mind was being invaded at that moment.

'Wait... it's not my fault that I'm here! Help me get out of here, then!', Jon could not help but think, becoming aware of what was happening.

The dragon remained irritated.

It raised its neck and roared.

-ROOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRR-

The sound seemed to echo across the entire island, so powerful that Jon could hear small screams below, probably from people fearing an attack from the creature.

Then the dragon opened its mouth.

Green flames exploded across the sky.

Jon felt his body pass through that cloud of fire as he dove alongside it like a falling star.

Then amid the vision of green flames bathing him, he awakened.

His eyes opened immediately. He saw the ceiling of the room as he quickly sat up in bed.

"Damn... what was that?", Jon muttered.

By that point, he was already quite aware of his abilities to connect with animals.

But a dragon...

'Damn!' That was far too dangerous.

Jon could not help but shiver. 'If anyone discovered that...'

Obviously, many people already knew about his animals — Ghost and the birds that followed him all the time — but controlling a dragon?! It was completely different.

If that reached the ears of the royal family, he would be dead.

'I must not share this with anyone...'

After all, Jon greatly doubted that ability was something limited only to him. Even his family on the farm could be condemned simply for having some connection to dragons.

And that was even worse.

How could someone enter the mind of a creature more than two thousand kilometers away?

In any case, Jon turned his eyes toward the window.

Darkness still dominated the sky. He walked toward it and sighed, spring had finally arrived.

Despite that, there was still a great deal of snow. Winter had ended only a few weeks ago, but soon the days would grow long once more.

Years of summer would come, and that was good.

The crops could grow again, Jon thought about the farm. His father would return to working the fields alongside his uncle, Sam would probably help as well.

Jon merely sighed. Then he looked at the three birds sleeping on the perch beside the room.

Or rather... two of them were already awake, silently observing all his movement.

"Since you're awake, Shadow, I need you to take this to my family."

Jon walked to the bedside, and the raven flew toward him and obediently landed on his shoulder, observing Jon with interest, as it always did.

Jon stroked the bird affectionately. The raven was already over thirty centimeters long and probably weighed nearly one and a half kilograms.

Shadow delighted in the scratching behind his neck, rubbing his head against him before Jon gave the bird a small treat and tied the string to its leg together with the small twigs.

He had written some letters before going to sleep and let Shadow rest that night before sending him to the farm. His parents could not read, but Mari and the others already had command of the common tongue.

Shadow let out a low sound before spreading his wings and flying through the window, quickly gaining altitude as he headed toward the southwest of the North, covering a distance of nearly three hundred and fifty kilometers to the farm. He would have between 4 to 8 hours of flight ahead of him. If it were Biri it would be faster, but Shadow tired less because he was a raven.

Jon was no longer sleepy. Since there was still little time before the sun rose, he decided to get ready to begin the day while most people still slept, picking up his coat made from the bear's hide.

He managed to make fur coats for all the Starks, as well as for his own family as gifts. His biological grandmother sewed them.

He could have built armor using the creature's hide, but he preferred to protect everyone from the winter, which until a few moons ago had still been harshly affecting the region.

Jon did not necessarily need his coat, but he wore it anyway because it did not bother him, he liked wearing heavy clothes regardless.

Jon left the room and walked through the corridors wrapped in his coat, finding some people already preparing for the beginning of the day, mainly the kitchen staff and part of the guard changing shifts.

"Hello, Jon." Everyone greeted him while Jon responded by calling each person by name. It was also not the first time they had seen him awake so early.

Some of the guards from the gate when he escaped had been quite irritated by the way he had run off that last time, but after hearing the full story, they could no longer remain angry with him.

Even so, Jon apologized to all of them.

He then left the castle and headed toward the Godswood. First, he checked to make sure no one else was there. Then he went to the heart tree and touched the trunk affectionately.

Jon possessed an almost excessive attachment to the sacred trees and the religion of the old gods, as if it were part of his very being. And somehow, the gods always seemed to answer.

In any case, he could not be seen there that morning, he needed to test a few more things he had learned over the past weeks.

So he went deeper into the woods, where no one would appear, even if they had entered to pray.

Because what he would do there certainly could not be seen by anyone. Not even by House Stark. After all, there were certain things Jon hid even from his own parents.

Things he could never tell the Starks either. He did not know how everyone would react to his strange abilities.

When he found a corner where no one would disturb him, he sat down in the snow and adjusted his cloak around his body.

Then he carefully removed the bear fur mantle and hung it on some branch among the smaller trees of the woods. Afterward, he began unbuttoning his shirt, leaving his chest exposed in that environment still covered in snow.

Any other person would feel extreme discomfort. But Jon was practically unaffected by the cold. He had always possessed an unusual resistance to freezing temperatures.

And that seemed to have increased even more over the past years.

In the palm of his hand, a small ember began to appear with a red glow. 1

It slowly grew until it transformed into a living flame, forming a small fireball as it began warming the surroundings and even melting the snow on the ground.

Jon remained there watching the flames emerge.

How had he done that? He had no idea, but he learned it in one of his dreams.

In his visions, he saw a land of fire, ruins, and death, filled with strange and monstrous creatures. Giant lizards with sharp teeth capable of devouring a man whole. Ancient ruins scattered throughout the place while rivers of lava crossed that destroyed world.

Jon Arctic faced countless challenges in that dream. He walked a path toward a mountain of fire, descending into its depths.

Into a volcano filled with ancient structures.

And the further he advanced through that civilization destroyed by collapse, the greater his mastery over fire became.

He controlled flames like no other person. He could act like a god. He faced creatures that hurled fireballs and flaming magic while he responded in kind.

He created explosions capable of annihilating Winterfell, could create fire tornadoes that shone like towers of light. Jon could perform magic that even grown men could not imagine.

Since then, he discovered he could create those small fireballs with his hand.

"I can do magic...", he declared alone in that hidden place within Winterfell. 1

But he still had not truly tested all that potential, because he knew how dangerous it was. At least fire magic... flames attracted far too much attention.

Then he raised his other free hand.

A white whirlwind of wind began spinning together with the fireball itself, while tiny frozen particles appeared around it.

He also mastered ice.

He had also seen in his dreams a Jon controlling those two elements. 1

In those visions, he could freeze everything around him simply through a shift in mood. Jon saw entire environments heating up from his rage, but he also saw his coldness transforming everything into ice.

Men died terrified before Jon Arctic's coldness when he merely wished to kill them silently.

Their skin, weapons, and armor froze instantly. He could freeze their bodies, make their organs simply stop functioning. He made hearts freeze, made lungs become useless.

In the present, his younger self could not produce effects so exaggerated, but he could still do some things and had not yet tested his limits...

Only the surrounding environment growing increasingly colder.

He had also seen, in his dreams, a massive ice storm swallowing entire groups of men.

Jon remained silent as the sun began rising on the horizon.

"Perhaps I should start training this from now on...", he decided.

Then he made the flame in his first hand disappear.

The whirlwind of ice spun even more violently in his other hand, producing crystalline sounds as small frozen fragments formed at high speed. Jon watched it for a few seconds before making the sphere disappear as well.

"Let's try..." He looked at all of Winterfell around him.

Ice seemed far easier to control than fire. Jon then focused first on the trees around him, closing his eyes and imagining himself freezing the area surrounding him.

He felt the air moving slowly as he tried to alter it somehow. Strangely, he seemed to understand perfectly how to control that element.

He could feel every nearby leaf and branch reacting to the growing cold. Then everything began to freeze.

The leaves became rigid. Crystals of ice began to appear.

When Jon opened his eyes again, all the trees around him were completely frozen.

"Incredible...", he said, satisfied with his progress.

Jon looked farther ahead, where the environment had not yet frozen.

Concentrating the ice into his hand once more, he felt the flow of that icy energy circulating through his body.

Then he placed one foot forward and moved his arm as if releasing something.

The next instant, a wave of snow the size of Jon himself surged forward violently, freezing everything in its path.

Even the snow-covered ground crystallized. The wave advanced until it struck a tree, exploding into a frozen mass that covered even more of the surroundings. The sound was somewhat loud, but no one was close enough to hear the crystals breaking.

"Interesting...", Jon commented, pleased.

"Now let's try this..." Jon muttered while observing the towers of Winterfell.

Then he raised his arms and began concentrating.

He wanted to test something he had seen in his dreams. He wanted to create a storm.

Jon felt the magic flowing through his entire body while the air around Winterfell slowly began to change.

The people, who were no longer so prepared for the intense cold after the end of winter, began to feel the temperature dropping more and more.

Some asked where that sudden cold was coming from. Meanwhile, Jon continued concentrating harder and harder.

He could control that energy better. But he also felt his strength being rapidly drained.

When he opened his eyes again, he realized he was dizzy. Jon could not create a true ice storm as he had wanted. He felt it would be far too dangerous to continue forcing it.

Even so, what he created was a massive frozen whirlwind surrounding Winterfell.

The icy wind forced people throughout the castle to quickly close the windows because of the sudden cold front.

It was not exactly what he wanted... But even so, he had completely altered the climate around one of the largest castles on the continent.

That definitely was not a small effect.

"Well... I think this will end soon...", Jon muttered.

He knew he could no longer continue training, having lost nearly all his strength creating the last spell. So he quickly dressed himself again, put on his coat, and ran out of the Godswood.

The freezing wind was already causing trouble for everyone in the courtyard.

People were running.

Hair whipped wildly in the gale.

Some shivered from the cold.

Guards who were unprepared quickly searched for something to warm themselves or ran toward the fires.

Jon stood still at the entrance, observing everything. Winterfell was in complete chaos.

'What have I done...?', he could not help but think.
