Chapter 29 – Returning Home.
[Chapter Size: 2700 Words.]
---------------------------------------
Third Person POV
North, 100 AC.
---------------------------------------
The sun beginning to rise, while a light shower of snowflakes swept across the North at that moment.
The sound of footsteps crushing the snow was constant, as Ghost moved forward, leaving his tracks behind after running all night.
Jon was there, wearing a grayish fur cloak, with Ghost's white pelt, he was practically invisible running across the field. Jon is quite resistant to low temperatures and usually wouldn't feel cold, but he still kept the cloak, even to hide his crossing and his face, as he continued moving across the snow-covered field.
As it was winter, the entire landscape had become completely white, and the dawn even gave a certain beauty with the sun's rays hitting the snowy field.
Jon had not stopped at any moment. He looked at Ghost with admiration as the wolf continued advancing with his breathing quite heavy, but steady, his eyes also mixed with his concern and desperation for his father.
They managed to move through the entire night thanks to the owl Jon had kept since it was a chick. She had flown along since he left Winterfell, and Jon used the owl's eyes to see in the darkness while keeping her in his lap, who always announced some obstacle ahead. And even the direction they should run.
Ghost maintained an impressive speed above 50 km/h, running for about six hours straight without stopping, going around forests and avoiding cities so as not to be seen, obviously, not following the normal road, even because it would take more time.
Because of that, the path was not direct, but full of detours and obstacles, which made them travel an even greater distance than necessary. But he still managed to cover 350 kilometers during the dawn.
They were already arriving. The sun continued to shine on the horizon, illuminating even more the vast white field.
Jon kept looking forward with his emerald eyes, contemplating the landscape while thinking. There were two reasons why Jon did not tell anyone and simply left Winterfell.
The first was that he did not want to be delayed. He would have to convince Lord Stark, and he knew he would be treated like a child throwing a tantrum over a 'dream he had'. Who would believe him to begin with, Jon would probably be stuck in Winterfell, trying to argue that he needed to leave immediately and return to the farm.
The second reason was that Ghost was much faster than any group that would be coming with him.
If Lord Stark agreed with his supposed dream in the middle of an important festival for the North, it would take too long and if he had already sent men after him for his escape, they would be disappointed. Since he had already crossed the entire path and the snow itself was covering his tracks as it filled the holes created by Ghost.
While they would take days to arrive, Jon had covered the path in just six hours. Jon, somehow, seemed to be giving some kind of energy to the wolf, driven only by the desire to save his father.
Jon was tired of this, but he did not give up.
"We're almost there," Jon murmured, already able to see the village about two kilometers away, with a few candles still lit.
"We'll go around the back," he decided.
They followed along the side, avoiding drawing attention from the village, heading straight to the farm. Even having to cross a small forest, it didn't matter.
Ghost began to slow his pace now... Entering the village area.
Jon knew he had done something with the farm animals last night, somehow — as if they had obeyed his desire to help his father.
But how had he done that? He didn't know yet... But he felt his connection with nature growing stronger each day.
Yesterday, Jon surprised his uncle, who became tense with those animals knocking at his door, but Jon did not give up until he finally made him mount the horse. They went into the forest — birds, deer, and the horse — and then more wolves joined and Jon guided them to where his father was.
Jon, in his desperation, while riding on Ghost and praying to the old gods to keep his father alive until he arrived, began to have more control over the animals around the farm, which before were untouchable.
Now... passing by the side of the village and advancing through the forest, he finally saw his home a few hundred meters away.
The farm had more than two houses now, there were barns, granaries. The place had prospered greatly. The heart tree had reached about ten meters in height, towering far above the house, and, somehow, the harvest had increased greatly, without waste.
Even natural predators, like foxes and other pests that would attack the crops, did not come close. There was a sort of line of animals that protected the farm from external threats, even being on the edges of the Wolfswood.
The first thing he saw were Mari and Sam, sitting beside Mari's younger brother, Caim.
Jon did not waste time. He did not wait to stop to open the gate. He advanced straight ahead, making a loud noise as he came out of the brush, and the children looked up, surprised and frightened by the sound repeating of something approaching.
When they saw the enormous white mass advancing through the gate with a leap that surpassed two meters, they were even more impressed.
Ghost had not only grown — he had developed in speed and strength. If Jon truly wanted, he could reach up to 80 km/h, more than double that of any warhorse. He was strong enough to carry him with ease, something that not even common direwolves should be able to do, since they could not reach 2 meters in height, and did not have the anatomy of a horse.
Ghost could also leap very high, to the point that two meters seemed like nothing. His bite was more powerful than that of any predator in the North.
His existence was more special than any other direwolf ever recorded.
At that moment, when they saw the mass of white fur advancing, the children stepped back at first. But, upon recognizing him a second later, they couldn't help but exclaim when they saw the hooded boy on top of him.
"Jon!" Mari shouted.
Sam also ran toward him.
Jon simply jumped down from Ghost, dropping the bag on the ground, while his two birds flew around.
He ran toward his cousins and brother. "Mari! Sam!" he shouted as he passed by them, without stopping.
"How is father?" Jon shouted, not even looking at them as he moved toward the house.
"He's bad... but your mother, and my parents are taking care of him!" Mari said, with a worried tone.
"Jon, was it you who made the animals take Uncle Roman to father?" Sam exclaimed.
There was only one explanation for what they had witnessed yesterday. With the animals simply going mad at dawn and making Roman enter the forest, being guided by a pack of creatures he had never had contact with until he reached his brother's dying body.
When Roman arrived at the camp, he saw all the destruction and found his brother lying on the ground, with his shoulder pierced. If the bear had sunk its teeth a few centimeters deeper, it could have torn Garren's arm off with ease. At that moment, it was Jon himself, filled with rage and desperation, who managed to save his father by forcing himself into the bear's mind.
His father was the only survivor of that place.
Roman placed him on the horse and brought him back to the farm, but not before using the first aid bag that the deer carried on its antlers, placed there by the birds themselves, and stopped the bleeding as best as he could.
As bizarre as the situation was, Roman acted quickly to save his brother.
After he arrived at the farm, the animals also brought the bodies of the other dead men. Some were unrecognizable, with their faces destroyed by the bear's paws.
In any case, Jon's arrival and the conversation between the children caught the attention of those inside the house. Rowena stretched her neck out the window and, upon seeing Jon entering, her eyes widened.
"Jon, my son!" she shouted, running outside, surprised to see him there.
"Mother!" he hugged her tightly. "How is father?" he murmured after a moment of embrace.
"He's bad, son... we've been trying to treat him all night, but his wounds are getting infected. There is a healer a few kilometers from here. Roman asked someone from the village to call him," she replied.
"Jon..." Roman was surprised to see him as well, as he approached.
"Let me see him," Jon demanded, quickly entering the room.
Inside, Sara was placing some liquid over the wounds. There was also a woman from the village helping to clean and disinfect the bite.
"Jon!" said Roman, greeting him.
Jon did not respond. He simply approached his father, who seemed to have a fever.
"Father..." he murmured, touching his forehead.
"Jon, I think it's better you give us space to work," Roman said.
But Jon shook his head. "No. I'll stay here."
He kept his hand on his father's head. 'I've already done this once...', he murmured to himself.
Not only in dreams — but also in the practices he had been hiding in Winterfell. He knew he could heal. He knew he had that ability.
He just couldn't show it like that. Not with the village woman there.
So he didn't let his hands glow. He only kept his palm on his father's forehead, sending healing energy into his body.
Everyone looked at him strangely, but no one said anything. The woman looked with suspicion, but continued cleaning the wounds.
And from the moment Jon kept his hand on his father's head, the fever began to drop quickly, until it stabilized.
The wounds began to disinfect on their own.
The infected skin and dead flesh began to be expelled, as if the body itself was purifying.
That left the village woman stunned, while Rowena, Sarra, and Roman looked in shock at Jon, who didn't even look at them, only kept his hand on his father's head.
"This is a miracle..." the village woman murmured, clearly sensing the difference, looking at Jon as if she had witnessed something divine.
Jon then looked at everyone present, who kept their eyes on him, and gave a small smile. "I think he's fine now, right?" he asked.
"Yes... your father is safe now..." Sarra replied, still with a lost tone.
Jon then stepped away from his father and went outside, where his cousins and siblings were, watching everything from the corridor.
"Is he okay?" Sam was the first to stop him.
"He is," Jon replied, averting his gaze from the boys and looking at Ghost, who raised his head outside the window. Even the horse and the deer stared at him.
Jon did not show a smile. He was tired. Exhausted.
He sat down with them on the house's porch and let out a sigh.
"Jon, you look so elegant! You came alone wearing those clothes... that's strange, but it's very beautiful, you look like one of those great nobles!" Mari said, as he looked at her with a piercing glare. She was quite an annoying girl sometimes with her teasing way.
"I was at the Harvest Festival tonight."
"Wait... you were in Winterfell at night?" Mari almost shouted. A trip to Winterfell took at least three or four days.
"Ghost ran all night, right, buddy?" Jon said, as he stroked the wolf's head, who was sitting beside him, resting with his tongue out.
He also looked at the horse a little distance from them — it was a gift from Lord Stark — and that Jon decided to leave at the farm. He had another one in Winterfell. He could have even used the horse, but it would have collapsed after a hundred kilometers running nonstop, maybe even before.
"Jon, you're becoming one of those fancy nobles!" Mari continued teasing, but now with a trace of envy.
Jon just shook his head. He didn't have the patience to deal with that now. The truth was that his cousins and brother felt a certain envy of him for living in Winterfell — and, let's be honest, who wouldn't? But sometimes, it was annoying.
It was at that moment that Rowena appeared.
"Son..." she asked for space from Mari, who stepped aside.
Rowena sat beside Jon and hugged him. "You look so handsome in those clothes," she said, with a maternal smile. "Is there any girl who likes you? I'm sure you're quite popular."
Jon pressed his lips, shy. "Mother... I am ten name days old."
"I met your father when I was ten name days old. And I liked him ever since," she replied, letting out a light huff.
"Mother, but I... I know I am handsome, but we're talking about highborn girls. I can't get involved with them if I don't want to have my head on a spike," he said.
She looked at him in horror. "What a horrible thing to say, Jon... but alright, you're right," she replied, understanding the dangers, before changing the subject. "Now tell me... you did that with the animals yesterday, didn't you? And you showed up here the next day. That means you knew what happened to your father since he was attacked, right?"
Jon nodded, with a serious look. "Yes... I went to rest early yesterday, even with the first day of the Harvest Festival. I dreamed of father being attacked... and I came here. It was the same bear that hurt Ghost years ago... About the animals... I don't know how, but I managed to alert Uncle Roman."
"You saved your father's life, Jon. If we had only found him this morning, he would be dead," she said, pulling her son into a tight embrace, holding his face with care.
"You saved your father's life," she repeated, as tears began to fall.
"I couldn't let him die, mother..." Jon said, also unable to hold back his tears. The desperation and anger he felt were still real.
She nodded, emotional.
"Now everything is fine... everything is fine," she said.
But for Jon, it wasn't.
He raised his gaze toward the forest.
No, it wasn't fine.
His father was safe... but there was still a beast out there. A beast far too close.
And what if it attacked the village? Or the farm, which was even closer to the forest?
He had already managed to stop it twice... but would he manage a third time?
And what if he was asleep? What if he didn't have time to react?
No.
He couldn't wait.
He wouldn't ask Lord Stark to send men to deal with it.
He would do it himself.
His mother still hugged him, while Sam and Mari also joined, having no idea what Jon was about to do.
After a few minutes, Rowena went to prepare something for him to eat. They also said goodbye to the village woman, who still looked at Jon as if he were a miracle. He knew her — she was one of the oldest in the village.
Jon just smiled politely. She nodded and began to walk away from the farm.
"I'm going to the heart tree," Jon said to his cousins. He walked there and, upon arriving, placed his hand on the trunk, closing his eyes.
"I need to find that bear." His mind drifted away from that place.
His consciousness began to travel through the forest, passing through trees, stones, and obstacles, as if it were being guided directly to the creature.
Then he found it in a clearing full of snow with the ground painted with blood. The enormous black bear was devouring a wolf — probably the same one he found after his failure with the humans.
"I found you... now let's see what you're made of," Jon murmured.
His consciousness advanced toward the bear. And entered directly into the bear's mind in the next moment.
