Chapter 76: A Top Student Can Never Resonate with a Poor One
Yu Xian froze. Can it see them?
If even ordinary creatures could see the petals of the red spider lily, then they would lose much of their value as a stealth reconnaissance tool. He immediately visualized another seed. Then he created a small spatial bubble on the tip of his index finger and placed the seed inside. Before long, a red spider lily bloomed within the bubble.
Yu Xian manipulated the petals to drift out of the bubble. He looked up at Nora and Chen Ling. "Nora, Chen Ling, turn around."
The two girls turned around simultaneously. Both of them exclaimed in delight, "Wow, it's beautiful!"
Yu Xian's expression instantly collapsed. As expected, the two of them could see it.
Then again, that was only natural. After all, the seed he had visualized was visible, not invisible, as described by the mystic art.
Curious, Chen Ling asked, "Salted Fish, is this a new ability of yours?"
She tried to touch one of the petals floating in the air, but her fingers passed straight through it. Clearly, the petals were not physical objects.
Nora asked, "What do they do?"
Unlike Chen Ling, she was more interested in practical applications.
Yu Xian sighed. "These petals are like my eyes. Wherever they drift, I can see whatever's there."
Nora's expression changed. She hurriedly pressed her hands against her skirt, her face turning bright red. "Then why are you making them float downward, you pervert?"
Yu Xian immediately defended himself. "I swear! I wasn't controlling those petals just now. They have minds of their own. They were drifting around randomly!"
"Hmph." Nora rolled her eyes at him before turning back around and resuming her study of the Sunward Sunflower Divine Art.
As it turned out, only someone with a guilty conscience knew just how guilty they really were.
Yu Xian let out a sigh. He slumped against the desk and pulled out his phone. Since he had already "mastered" Spatial Perception and had nothing better to do, he decided to pick up a few more spatial arts. After all, it seemed pretty simple.
The class bell rang, but Yu Xian was completely immersed in the vast ocean of spatial arts.
Spatial Leap allowed the caster to use mental strength as an anchor and repeatedly jump or transfer between two nearby spatial coordinates. Dimensional Gate constructed a stable portal between two coordinates, allowing multiple people to travel through it. Spatial Vortex agitated the fabric of space within a designated area, shredding and annihilating all matter caught inside.
Spatial Folding folded two regions of space together, creating an endlessly looping spatial structure. Spatial Maze was an advanced spatial art built upon the foundation of Spatial Folding. This spatial art compressed and folded a vast expanse of space into a complex, exitless labyrinth, seamlessly trapping enemies within its confines.
Spatial Expansion expanded a portion of space to create a larger internal volume. It was one of the foundational techniques used in the creation of spatial pouches.
Compressing Distance compressed space beneath the user's feet, allowing a single step to span vast distances. Cosmos Within the Sleeve permanently expanded an enclosed space, forming an independent pocket world. Even an entire universe could be contained within it.
Deciding to cut his teeth on the simpler spatial arts before tackling the difficult ones, Yu Xian traded his merit points for Spatial Leap. Currently, whenever he wanted to teleport, he first had to return to one of his spatial bubbles, then initiate the transfer. At first glance, that seemed like only a single extra step, but in actual combat, a single extra step often meant the difference between life and death.
Spatial Leap happened to solve this weakness perfectly. He could establish anchor points inside numerous spatial bubbles in advance. Even if he wasn't physically inside a bubble, he could leap back to one at any time, allowing himself to evade most attacks.
Ten minutes later, his body flickered where he sat. In just a few seconds, he traversed dozens of bubbles before returning to the classroom.
The look of disbelief remained on his face. This spatial art was a little too easy. Could it be that I'm a genius?
Yu Xian rubbed his chin, secretly pleased with the possibility. After all, it had been ridiculously simple. Creating an anchor point required only a small amount of his mental energy. As for anchor points inside his spatial bubbles, constructing them felt as natural as opening his mouth to eat.
Unable to contain his curiosity, he posted a question on the discussion board. Within minutes, his post was flooded with replies from people venting their frustrations.
Megrez: Are spatial arts difficult to learn? Hell yes, they're difficult! I've been studying the absolute simplest one, Spatial Expansion. Want to know how long it’s taken me so far? Ten years. A full ten years. And do you know how long I've spent trying to learn Spatial Leap? Fifteen years. Fifteen whole years. And I still haven't learned the damn thing.
Fae: Let me put it this way. For someone without spatial aptitude, learning spatial arts is like a fish learning how to run on land or a person without wings trying to soar through the sky. How difficult do you think that is?
Baldy: Just look at my codename. I went bald trying to learn spatial arts. Without the talent to perceive space directly, merely calculating coordinates is enough to make your head explode. I really envy those geniuses who don't have to calculate coordinates at all.
Orange: To learn Dimensional Gate, my head practically got squeezed into a rectangle. I seriously regret joining the Support Department. I seriously regret trying to learn spatial arts. Why does spatial art even exist in this world?
Yu Xian read through the endless stream of complaints and found himself utterly incapable of relating to any of them. What? Someone has spent fifteen years learning Spatial Leap and still not mastered it? What? Spatial coordinates have to be calculated? Isn't it enough to simply feel where they are? What? Dimensional Gate is that difficult? It can even leave your head feeling like it's about to split open?
The corners of Yu Xian's mouth slowly curled upward. According to Fae's explanation, Yu Xian did seem to be a genius in spatial arts. I laugh with pride. I laugh with pride. I laugh with pride...[1]
Delighted, he continued reading the complaints, and the smile on his face grew brighter and brighter. So, this is what it feels like for an academic prodigy to look at struggling students. It is... kind of satisfying.
He exchanged his merit points for Spatial Expansion. As expected, it was just as easy. With minimal effort, he expanded his desk drawer until it was as large as an entire classroom. If he were willing to spend more Spatial Blood Energy, he could even enlarge it until it exceeded the size of the entire academy.
Yu Xian grinned from ear to ear. "Piece of cake."
Just thinking about how Megrez had spent a whole decade learning Spatial Expansion gave him a sudden surge of smug satisfaction. Using cheats was great for a moment, but keeping them on was pure bliss.
He stared at his phone, his eyes landing on Compressing Distance. Just like Cosmos in the Sleeve, this mystic art was in a prestigious class of its own.
After spending a considerable amount of merit points, he successfully exchanged for the mystic art. However, the moment he opened the manual, he was dumbfounded. The entire text was a dense wall of Daoist terminology and Book of Changes jargon. He recognized every single individual character, but once they were strung together, they made absolutely no sense to him. [2]
Yu Xian spent a long time trying to learn it. He even opened a copy of the Book of Changes and compared the text line by line. Eventually, he got a massive headache and gave up. He just couldn't make heads or tails of the manual. "I never thought the reason I would fail to learn Compressing Distance would be that I'm historically illiterate."
Turns out you can get away with being weak, but you absolutely cannot get away with being uncultured. Otherwise, even if a god-tier technique is staring you right in the face, if you can’t comprehend it, it doesn't mean a damn thing.
Unwilling to give up just yet, he flipped through others' cultivation notes, only to discover that learning Compressing Distance required more than just a brain. It also demanded enlightenment.
I can't learn it. I really can't. What the hell does the Dao aligns with nature mean? What do they mean by becoming one with the world or a mind as vast as the cosmos?I am only seventeen years old. Where the hell am I supposed to get "enlightened"? I haven't even figured out how romance works yet. Concepts like enlightenment are light-years away from me.
1. "我得意的笑 (wǒ déyì de xiào) is a playful reference to 得意的笑(Déyì de Xiào, "A Smug/Triumphant Laugh"), a well-known 1993 song performed by Lily Lee. The phrase literally means "I laugh smugly" or "I laugh triumphantly", and is often used jokingly to suggest someone is feeling pleased with themselves. ☜
2. 易经 (Yìjīng), or the Book of Changes, is one of the oldest and most influential Chinese classical texts. Dating back over 3,000 years to the Zhou Dynasty, it began as a simple divination manual but evolved into a profound philosophical masterpiece. It serves as the foundational bedrock for both Daoism (Taoism) and Confucianism, shaping East Asian philosophy, cosmology, medicine, and even martial arts for millennia. ☜
