Chapter 45: An Introduction to the Abyss
Looking at the unconscious young girl, Yu Xian immediately turned to Zhang Shou. "Can she still be saved?"
Zhang Shou did not dare make any promises. He gritted his teeth. "I don't know, but I'll do my best."
He immediately cast Healing Touch on the girl. The tentacle coiled around the girl, but the moment it made contact with her body, a loud sizzling sound erupted. Large amounts of white smoke billowed from the Healing Touch.
Zhang Shou sucked in a sharp breath. "What terrifying poison. Salted Fish, you'd better stay back. That smoke is poisonous too."
Yu Xian nodded and immediately retreated several steps before surrounding himself with a protective bubble.
In the past, whenever Zhang Shou used Healing Touch, he could cure even terminal illnesses with ease. This was the first time Yu Xian had ever seen such an extreme reaction from the ability. That could only mean the poison inside the young girl was unimaginably potent.
The Healing Touch melted away like ice placed on a red-hot iron plate. Zhang Shou clenched his teeth and cast the ability again, forming a new tentacle. Without pausing for even a moment, he cast Healing Touch again and again until the tentacles had wrapped all around the young girl. Viewed from a distance, the scene looked more sinister than healing.
Smoke rose continuously from the girl's body as the poison battled against the Healing Touch. Whenever one of the tentacles was dissolved, Zhang Shou immediately replaced it with another. At the same time, he visibly aged. In the blink of an eye, he had gone from a young man to a middle-aged man.
Zhang Shou watched the green color gradually fade from the young girl's body. "This poison is too terrifying."
Yu Xian nodded. He suspected that if the poison had gotten into his body, he would have dissolved into a puddle of liquid almost instantly. That also showed just how powerful the young girl was. Such a terrifying poison had failed to kill her. It was difficult to imagine her resilience.
Half a minute later, the young girl slowly opened her eyes. The moment she noticed the tentacles wrapped around her, she frowned.
Yu Xian, who had been watching her the entire time, reassured her. "Don't be nervous. We're members of the Wickedness Purging Squad. We're treating the poison in your body."
Gong Qian suppressed her discomfort. "How long was I unconscious?"
Yu Xian replied, "About five minutes."
She immediately tried to get up, but Zhang Shou stopped her. "The poison inside you hasn't been completely neutralized yet. Try to hold on a little longer."
Gong Qian clenched her teeth and shook her head. "I can't. That monster is too strong. The others won't be able to stop it. I need to get back there."
She understood this better than anyone. If even she couldn't blow the creature apart with a single punch, then the other three captains stood little chance against it.
Zhang Shou couldn't help but ask, "Um... what about General Zhao Yi?"
Gong Qian sat up. "General Zhao Yi was transported here directly through a teleportation formation. He has to guard an Abyssal Rift, so he was sent back immediately after he launched his attack."
Zhang Shou activated his abilities once more, looking visibly older than before. "An Abyssal Rift? Then can't they teleport him back here again?"
Gong Qian helplessly shook her head. "The space around an Abyssal Rift is extremely unstable. Just preparing a single teleportation formation takes more than a day. Otherwise, why do you think we waited until noon to launch the operation? Do you think we didn't want to deal with this sooner?"
Yu Xian pondered it for a moment. "Then are there any other Dragon-rank powerhouses who can provide support?"
Gong Qian rolled her eyes at him. "Dragon-rank powerhouses don't grow on trees. The directors have to remain in Yanjing. The other generals are responsible for guarding Abyssal Rifts. The rest are stationed along the borders to deter foreign powers. Even if reinforcements are available... the earliest they could arrive would probably be tomorrow afternoon."
Yu Xian pressed further. "Are there any Dragon-rank powerhouses among the civilians, then?"
Gong Qian fell silent. Seeing her hesitation, Yu Xian immediately continued, "This isn't the time to hold back. If there are Dragon-rank powerhouses among the civilians, we should ask for their help. This place is too close to Silver City. If something goes wrong, the consequences could be catastrophic."
Gong Qian nodded. "Okay, I'll try to request support."
The thought of Silver City being overrun was enough to spur Gong Qian into action. She immediately took out her phone, but the device instantly dissolved, melted by the poison leaking from her palm.
Both she and Yu Xian fell silent. Zhang Shou couldn't help himself and asked, "If the poison is that terrifying, how come your clothes are still fine?"
Gong Qian's face flushed red. She glared at him. "You pervert. Are you hoping my clothes get dissolved?"
Although Zhang Shou now looked like a middle-aged man, he was still a pure-hearted high school student at heart. His expression immediately turned awkward. "I-I-I didn't mean it like that! I was just curious!"
Gong Qian rolled her eyes. "My clothes are made from Dragon-rank materials. How could they possibly get dissolved that easily?"
With the monstrous strength she possessed, ordinary clothing simply couldn't withstand her movements. A casual stretch or punch would reduce normal fabric to scraps. Therefore, Qilin's headquarters had invested an enormous amount of resources into creating the outfit she wore now.
Not only could it withstand her tremendous strength without tearing during combat, but it was also packed with multiple elemental and status resistances. A little poison wasn't going to damage such an artifact.
Yu Xian looked at Gong Qian, still thinking about any potential reinforcements. "Then... what do we do now?"
Gong Qian pressed her palm against one of the tentacles. "Don't worry. I break things all the time, so I own hundreds of phones. Once the poison is gone from my hands, I'll be able to ask for reinforcements."
As she kept her arm on the tentacle, a constant sizzling sound filled the air.
Zhang Shou was curious. "Does it hurt?"
Gong Qian calmly said, "This poison is definitely strange. Even I can't fully resist it. That said, it doesn't hurt. It just makes moving around a little difficult."
Yu Xian remarked dryly, "I think you're just the only one who doesn't feel the pain."
Deimos's poison could dissolve a phone almost instantly. How could anyone exposed to it feel no pain? An ordinary person would probably melt into a puddle of liquid in agony the moment they came into contact with it.
Finally, with Gong Qian's active cooperation, the poison in her hand was completely removed. After carefully confirming that no traces of it remained, she immediately pulled out another phone and switched it on.
She made several calls and sent a series of messages. After a while, her face flushed red with frustration. "Damn it! Of all times, he had to choose now to go into the Abyss!"
Yu Xian turned to her. "What do you mean?"
Gong Qian looked thoroughly annoyed. "Dragon-rank powerhouses are already among the strongest people in existence. Even the government can't simply order them around. Of all the unaffiliated Dragon-rank powerhouses, the easiest one to deal with is the Great Sage Equal to Heaven. As long as you're willing to offer sufficient compensation, he'll usually help."[1]
Having been curious ever since the term was first mentioned, Zhang Shou asked, "What exactly is the Abyss?"
Gong Qian rubbed her forehead. "The Abyss is... the Abyss. No one knows how it came into existence. What we do know is that every Forbidden Fruit originates from there. Space is extremely unstable around Abyssal Rifts. Whenever a Forbidden Fruit appears near one, it's randomly teleported somewhere else in the world."
Yu Xian asked again, "Then why did the Great Sage Equal to Heaven go there?"
Gong Qian answered matter-of-factly, "To search for treasures, of course. Most materials of the Dragon rank and above come from the Abyss. Once you reach Eagle rank, you'll be eligible to apply for permission to enter it from headquarters."
Zhang Shou asked, "Then what do we do now?"
Gong Qian and Yu Xian both fell silent. As things stood, there wasn't much they could do.
1. 齐天大圣 (Qítiān Dàshèng) is the most famous title of Sun Wukong, the Monkey King from Journey to the West. In the original tale, Sun Wukong adopted the title himself to proclaim a status equal to that of Heaven, making it a symbol of immense power, defiance, and independence. ☜
