Infinite Rebate System: Beautiful Women And Endless Returns

Chapter 127: The Flight

The boarding announcement came at 8:45AM.

Xavier picked up both bags from beside the lounge chairs. Selene stood and smoothed her jeans with the particular automatic gesture of someone whose hands needed something to do when they were about to go somewhere.

They walked to the gate together.

The business class cabin was small. Eight seats, four rows of two, the particular intimate atmosphere of a short haul premium cabin that took itself seriously despite the flight duration. A flight attendant showed them to their seats. Window and aisle. Selene took the window without discussing it.

Xavier didn’t mention it.

She wants to see it coming, he thought. The city. She wants to watch Millhaven arrive from above.

He settled into the aisle seat. Put both bags in the overhead. Sat down.

The cabin filled quietly around them. The particular focused energy of people who had somewhere to be and had paid enough to get there comfortably.

The plane took flight at exactly 9:05AM.

Selene was looking out the window. Kenvale was visible from below in the particular way cities looked from low altitude. The grid of streets, the commercial district’s cluster of taller buildings, the residential areas spreading out from the centre like something that had grown organically rather than been planned.

Xavier watched her watching it.

She’s looking for something, he thought. Or looking at something she’s leaving. Even temporarily.

"You can see Hale and Associates from here," she said. Not to him specifically. Just out loud. "The building on Meridian Street. The sixth floor."

Xavier leaned slightly toward the window and looked.’She’s exaggerating things’’. He thought.

Meridian Street, he thought. Two blocks from the commercial property he’d acquired two months ago. The building where Selene had been standing at a desk with a tablet when the lift opened on his first visit.

"I think i see it," he said. Playing along with her.

She kept looking until the plane banked and Kenvale tilted away beneath them and disappeared behind cloud.

She sat back.

Looked straight ahead.

Something in her expression, Xavier noted. Not sad. Not relieved. The particular look of someone watching one Chapter close before the next one has fully opened.

He said nothing. Let it sit.

The flight attendant came by with the cabin service. Xavier ordered sparkling water. Selene ordered the same and then changed her mind and ordered a mimosa.

Xavier looked at her.

"It’s 9AM," he said.

"It’s a vacation," she said. The same words he’d used on her twice already. The corner of her mouth moving with the particular satisfaction of someone returning a serve.

He ordered one too.

She looked at him.

"Don’t do that," she said.

"Do what," he said.

"Order the same thing I order just because I ordered it," she said.

"I wanted a mimosa," he said.

"You ordered water first," she said.

"I changed my mind," he said.

She held his gaze for a moment. Then looked back at the tray table with the expression of someone who had made a point and was comfortable leaving it there.

She’s relaxing, Xavier thought. Not visibly. Just in small ways. The mimosa. The window seat taken without asking. The returned serve. He picked up his drink when it came. This is a different version of her from the office. Different from the Thursday restaurant. Different from the Sunday drive.

Forty five minutes in a pressurised cabin at thirty thousand feet, he thought. Does something to the professional surface.

"Tell me about Millhaven," he said. "The real version. Not the one you gave in the lounge."

She looked at him.

"I gave you the real version in the lounge," she said.

"You gave me the edited version," he said. "The one that explains leaving without explaining why leaving was necessary."

She held his gaze for a long moment.

The plane hummed around them. The cabin quiet in the way short haul business class was quiet. Contained, private, the world outside reduced to cloud and distance.

"My family is there," she said finally. "My mother. A younger brother." She paused. "We don’t have a bad relationship. It’s just..." Another pause. Shorter. "Millhaven made certain things feel fixed. Like the version of me that existed there was the only version available." She looked at her mimosa. "Kenvale gave me room to be a different version."

Fixed, Xavier thought. The version of me that existed there was the only version available. He looked at her profile. That’s what she left. Not a bad place. Not bad people. Just a version of herself she’d outgrown and couldn’t find room to leave behind while she was still inside it.

"And now," he said.

"Now I’m going back," she said. "As the version that left." A brief moment. "Which is different."

"Yes," he said. "It is."

She looked at him.

"You understand that," she said. Not a question.

More than you know, he thought. I came back to a life I’d already lived and I’m the version that survived it. He held her gaze. Different circumstances. Same principle.

"Yes," he said simply.

She held his gaze for a moment longer than the conversation required.

Then she looked back at the window where there was nothing to see but cloud and said nothing else for a while.

Xavier let the silence sit.

This, he thought. This is what she needed to say before we landed. Not in a restaurant. Not in a car. Up here where there’s nowhere to go and no professional reason and forty five minutes of pressurised air between one city and another.

Good, he thought. She said it.

The descent began at 9:38AM. Thirty minutes elapsed like butter.

Selene turned to the window again as the cloud broke and Millhaven appeared below.

Smaller than Kenvale. Different shape. The city spread along a river rather than radiating from a centre. Greener at the edges. The downtown visible as a cluster of mid-rise buildings that didn’t try to compete with anything, just sat there being what they were.

Selene looked at it coming up through the window with the particular expression he’d been trying to name since the boarding gate.

Recognition, he thought. That’s what it is. The particular recognition of something that was yours before you knew what yours meant.

"There it is," she said quietly.

"There it is," he said.

The plane touched down smoothly at 9:47AM.

Selene sat back from the window. Breathed once. Then looked at Xavier with the expression that had been getting less composed the longer they’d been in the air.

"Okay," she said. Just that. The word of someone who had arrived somewhere and was ready for whatever arrived meant.

"Okay," he replied.

They waited for the cabin to clear. Xavier retrieved both bags from the overhead. They walked off the plane into the Millhaven terminal.

It was a different airport from Kenvale. Smaller, quieter, the particular atmosphere of a city that knew its size and was comfortable with it. Selene moved through it differently from how she moved through anything in Kenvale. Faster. More certain. Her shoulders slightly different.

Her city, Xavier thought. In her body before her mind has caught up.

Outside the terminal Xavier opened his banking app while Selene was watching a cab rank fill up.

$3,000,000 mission, he thought. Millhaven. No map. No infrastructure. Just the cap and my own judgment.

He looked at the city visible beyond the terminal entrance. Different skyline from Kenvale. Different energy.

Let’s see what Millhaven has, he thought.

He booked a car from the airport app.

First, he thought. The hotel.

Selene came back from watching the cab rank.

"Car?" she said.

"Two minutes," he said.

She nodded. Looked at the city through the terminal glass.

"Millhaven," she said quietly. To herself more than him.

Xavier looked at her looking at her city.

Three years, he thought. She came back.

Let’s make it worth the return.
