Chapter 152: At Least One Of Them Is Sensible
Their forearms crossing before their faces, trying to shield their eyes from the debris that was being thrown outward by the force of the flame.
Small pieces of stone were torn from the cavern walls and ceiling by the violence of the dragon’s breath. Dust and ash and fragments of burned rock fell down like rain.
The kings stood their ground.
Their transformed bodies responded to form a shield against the fire that should have killed them instantly.
The heat scorched their skin even through their defenses. It made breathing feel like inhaling molten steel. It set every nerve on fire with pain that transcended normal sensation.
But they survived it.
The fire extinguished suddenly, PYROS closing his mouth, cutting off the stream of flame. The column of fire collapsed. The sound of roaring ceased. The heat, while still intense, became something that the kings could tolerate.
The smoke and ash settled slowly back down.
The kings remained standing.
PYROS lowered his massive head.
He moved closer to the kings with deliberate slowness. Each footstep was a decision, each movement weighted with intention. The Crimson Dragon descended the slight slope of the cavern floor until he was directly above the three kings.
His golden eyes fixed on them.
All three of the kings holding their ground despite the terror that came from standing beneath a dragon whose head alone was larger than the kings’ entire bodies. Despite the knowledge that a single strike from those massive claws could end all three of their lives.
The dragon studied them.
His eyes moved from Draeven to Kaelen to Thorne and back again, assessing, understanding, reaching some kind of decision based on what he saw in their transformed forms.
His mouth opened slightly.
And a sound emerged....not flame this time, but something deeper. A rumbling that spoke of ancient recognition. Of understanding. Of the moment when an ancient being comprehends that it is facing not helpless mortals, but one of its own kind.
The Crimson Dragon’s massive head tilted slightly, as if seeing them from a new angle.
The moment stretched.
And while it stretched, the other two dragons moved.
AERIS turned in their direction, her intelligent eyes tracking them. She began to walk forward, her movement graceful despite her damaged wing. The Silver Dragon’s approach was measured and calculated.
AURYN lifted his massive head slightly from his coiled form. The Gold Dragon watched but did not move from his place.
Draeven raised his hands slowly.
The gesture was deliberate, careful, designed to communicate non-aggression despite his transformed state.
His voice emerged, and it carried the resonance of his dragon beneath it, but also the rational tone of a king attempting to negotiate with forces beyond mortal control.
"We are not here to harm you."
His golden eyes met the ancient dragon’s gaze without flinching.
"We just want you to calm down, Because you are about to bring the entire palace down to ruin."
He took a step forward "We need you to stop."
His voice steady despite the terror that came from standing so close to power that transcended his own understanding.

While PYROS remained focused on Draeven, AERIS moved to stand beside her male companion.
The Silver Dragon was smaller than PYROS and AURYN, but her intelligence was evident in every movement. She lowered her massive head until her eyes were level with the kings’.
And then she made a sound.
It was not a roar. Not a growl. Not any of the sounds that dragons typically made.
It was something that might almost be described as laughter.
A deep, resonant sound that echoed through the cavern. A sound that suggested amusement, recognition, something almost like joy mixed with ancient sadness.
The other dragons seemed to still slightly in response to her sound.
And then....
AERIS opened her mouth.
"Did you hear that, PYROS? The young king is telling you he is not here to harm us."
Her voice carried amusement, but also something deeper. Something that might have been affection, or at least respect for the attempt at communication.
She turned her head slightly, her damaged wing rustling as she moved.
"As if they could."
The words were delivered with absolute certainty.
Not arrogance, but simple fact.
These ancient beings had seen centuries pass. They had witnessed the rise and fall of kingdoms. They had endured trials that the kings could not imagine.
The thought that mortal kings could harm them was almost amusing.
The moment stretched between them.
An ancient dragon, one who had not spoken in centuries, now speaking to mortal kings. The very act was a revelation. The very fact that she had chosen to communicate rather than simply continue her rampage spoke volumes.
Thorne understood this.
His analytical mind grasped the significance immediately.
He stepped forward slowly and deliberately.
His movements were careful, respectful, designed to communicate non-aggression while also demonstrating that he understood the gravity of the moment.
And then he bowed.
A deep, formal bow that spoke of respect and honor and the acknowledgment of beings whose power transcended his own.
His dark eyes remained on AERIS even as he bent, maintaining contact, showing that his respect was genuine rather than fearful.
Then he straightened and said. "Pardon our manners, AERIS."
He used her name, showing he knew her, and also showing her the respect she deserves.
"We mean no disrespect to have come here uninvited, We simply wish to understand what could have caused your distress."
His dark eyes met her golden ones without flinching.
The King asking the ancient dragon to explain herself.
And AERIS’s response was immediate.
Her massive head turned slightly, regarding Thorne with what might have been approval. Her voice, when it came, carried something warmer than before.
Something that suggested she recognized in this king something that deserved acknowledgment.
"At least one of them is sensible."
The words fell like a benediction.
Her golden eyes flickered to Draeven and Kaelen before returning to Thorne.
The message clear: of the three, this one understands.
