The Dragon Kings' Forbidden Witch

Chapter 140: This Court Stands Adjourned

Thorne moved immediately.

He did not hesitate. He did not look back. He simply followed his oldest brother out of the chamber with the kind of silent grace that suggested he had been waiting for this moment, had been planning for this conversation, had been prepared for everything that was about to happen.

The court watched him go, understanding that the Shadow King had orchestrated this entire sequence, had brought the conspiracy to light, had ensured that Morgana the servant girl, who shouldn’t matter to them at all was saved.

Kaelen remained seated oh his throne for a moment longer.

His pale ice-blue eyes moved across the assembled court, studying each face, taking in their expressions, understanding their fears and their judgments.

And the court began to shift uncomfortably under his gaze.

Kaelen had been unstable since the transformation incident weeks ago. Everyone knew it. The palace staff whispered about it. The nobles discussed it in hushed tones. There were rumors of him barely controlling his dragon, of him struggling to maintain his composure, of him being on the edge of something dangerous.

And now, looking at his pale, burning eyes, the court began to understand why those rumors existed.

His gaze held an intensity that was almost unbearable to meet. It held the kind of raw power that suggested a predator barely holding itself in check. It held the kind of dangerous promise that made even the most confident among them want to look away.

Several of the elder council members did look away, unable to maintain eye contact with the burning intensity of his stare.

They understood, in that moment, that Kaelen was not entirely stable. They understood that invoking the Law of Crown Protection for a servant girl, that deciding to claim her as a ward of the throne, meant something to him that went beyond the logical explanations of politics or strategy.

They understood that there was something about Morgana that affected him, that called to something inside him that he was struggling to control.

And in understanding that, they understood that the game that was playing out in the palace had become far more complex and dangerous than anyone had anticipated.

Kaelen stood slowly.

His pale eyes remained fixed on the court for just a moment longer.

Then he turned and walked from the chamber, his boots echoing against the marble floor, his presence seeming to drain the heat from the room as he left.

The silence that followed his departure was absolute.

When all three kings had exited the chamber, Cedric remained standing at the front.

His mind was racing through the implications of what had just happened, understanding the political calculations, grasping the reality of the new situation.

He looked toward Elder Aldric, the oldest member of the council, the one who had served under three different generations of kings, the one whose political wisdom and experience were considered invaluable.

And their eyes met.

In that moment, without a single word being spoken, an understanding passed between them.

"We need to talk."

It was not said aloud. It did not need to be. The exchange of glances was enough to communicate the urgency, the seriousness, the critical nature of what needed to be discussed.

Aldric gave a subtle nod, understanding that he would be sought out after the court had dispersed, that this conversation would happen in private, away from the ears of those who might report to various noble houses.

Cedric turned back to face the assembled court.

"This court stands adjourned," he said formally. "All who were present are dismissed. You are to speak of what occurred here only with discretion and respect for the authority of the crown. Any who spread rumors or sedition regarding the events of this trial will answer to the kings directly."

It was a warning, carefully worded but absolutely clear.

The court began to disperse.

Nobles rose from their seats. Ministers gathered their documents. Servants moved to clear the chamber. The machinery of the palace began to reset itself, to accommodate this new reality, to adjust to the fact that a ward of the throne now resided in the royal wing.

***

Slowly, the throne room emptied.

The crowd thinned from hundreds to dozens to a handful of ministers and council members remaining to handle the final administrative details.

The afternoon light continued to stream through the high windows, illuminating the now-mostly-empty chamber.

And on the marble floor where Morgana had stood, where her shackles had fallen away, where her life had irrevocably changed, there was nothing but polished stone reflecting sky.

The trial was over.

The conspiracy had been exposed.

The guilty had been expelled.

And a new Chapter in the palace’s history had begun.

But no one yet understood how significant that Chapter would be. No one yet understood that the Law of Crown Protection had not been invoked casually, had not been used simply to save an innocent servant girl, had been invoked for reasons that went far deeper into prophecy and destiny and the ancient magic that bound the kingdom together.

That understanding would come later.

For now, there was only the knowledge that something had changed, that the political landscape had changed, that the presence of one servant girl, one ward of the throne, would ripple through the entire structure of the palace in ways that no one could yet predict.

***

The palace corridors seemed to stretch endlessly.

Agnes moved through them with the confident grace of someone who had walked these halls for decades, someone who knew every turn, every passage, every hidden shortcut that the palace contained.

Morgana followed behind her, moving like a ghost.

Her feet carried her forward, but her mind was somewhere else entirely. She was present in her body but absent from the moment. She was moving but not walking. She was alive but not living.

Around them, servants and staff moved about their evening duties.

When they saw Agnes approaching with someone in tow, when they saw the girl in fresh clothes, when they heard the whispered words that passed from one servant to the next: "That’s the ward of the throne. That’s the one from the trial" they stepped aside immediately.
