Chapter 151: Dog-skin Plaster
After registering, finding out her class schedule, and learning who her advisor was, the first day was basically over.
When Chloe York came out, she inevitably ran into Ethan Prescott. His face lit up when he saw her. "Chloe, we meet again."
He had always felt that Evan Shaw following Chloe around meant they were fated to be together. But now that he was running into Chloe too, did that mean he and Chloe were also destined to be?
"What are you doing here?" Chloe really felt that Ethan was being too clingy and stubborn.
She was at Southbend University now; he should have been a million miles away!
’How can I run into him whether I’m on vacation or starting college? Wait, don’t tell me he’s a student here too?’
’Oh, god. How is this any different from high school? It feels like they’re all still here. Except for Stella Winters, of course.’
She would much rather have Stella with her than see Brooke York and Ethan Prescott.
"Chloe, I enrolled at this university too. So for the next four years, we’ll be schoolmates again."
Ethan’s tone was cheerful. To him, the fact that Chloe had taken the initiative to ask him a question was proof that their relationship was progressing.
Chloe let out a dry laugh and turned to leave. ’As long as we’re just schoolmates, that’s fine. I’m just worried we’re in the same major and will end up as classmates again.’
Seeing Chloe’s coldness didn’t upset Ethan. On the contrary, he was quite happy. A little progress was enough for now; he couldn’t ask for too much at once.
"Well then, schoolmate, you go get busy. I’m leaving now." Chloe sidestepped him and walked away.
Ethan didn’t try to stop her, watching her as she left. ’Anyway, we’re at the same university now. There will be plenty of chances to see her. There’s no rush.’
"Ethan."
Just as he was about to leave, he heard Brooke York’s voice. Ethan’s brow furrowed. His first thought was, ’Why am I hearing Brooke’s voice?’
He turned toward the sound and, sure enough, saw Brooke York walking toward him with a wide smile.
"What are you doing here?" He remembered she had gotten a zero on every exam, hadn’t she? Didn’t she say she was going abroad to polish her credentials? Shouldn’t she be overseas right now? Why was she here?
"I enrolled at this university! The truth is, I didn’t get zeros. They made a mistake with my scores. My real scores were good enough for Southbend. See? I’m here to register today, just like you guys!"
Brooke explained, thinking that after hearing this, Ethan would surely see her in a new light. He might even complain on her behalf.
To her surprise, after listening, Ethan showed no concern at all. Without a word, he prepared to leave.
"Ethan." Brooke blocked Ethan as he was about to walk away.
Blocked, Ethan was clearly displeased. "Is there something else?"
He wanted absolutely no unnecessary contact with Brooke right now.
He had finally seen Brooke’s true colors. ’I must have been blind before, not to have seen what she was really like.’
’Chloe was the real gem, and I failed to see it.’
"Ethan, can’t you stop being so cold to me?" Brooke’s voice was tinged with hurt. With her old personality, she would never have said something like this.
Where she used to live, all the boys had doted on her. At first, Ethan had been just like them, but at some point, he had switched targets, transferring the affection he had for her onto Chloe.
’It must be because Chloe said something bad about me to Ethan. That’s the only reason he would have changed like this.’
Brooke never considered what she had done to Sophia Quinn, nor did she consider the possibility that Sophia had told Ethan what she’d done.
"I don’t think our relationship is close enough to warrant any warmth," Ethan said mercilessly.
A flash of embarrassment crossed Brooke’s face. Just moments ago, she had seen Chloe and Ethan standing here.
Ethan had been smiling the entire time, while Chloe was clearly displeased. Why had his expression completely changed now that he was facing her?
"Ethan, did Chloe say something about me to you? Is that why you’re acting like this? When I first came back, you were so helpful. Weren’t you the one who couldn’t stand Chloe?"
"That was me being a fool. I’m not going to be a fool anymore. Also, Chloe is a good person. She has never said a single bad thing about you in front of me. So, don’t judge her by your own petty standards."
Hearing Brooke speculate about Chloe like that, and even slander her, only intensified Ethan’s dislike for her.
He didn’t want to say anything more. He gave her a warning glance and left.
"Ethan Prescott, you just wait! In the future, even if you wanted to date me, I wouldn’t agree!"
Brooke stomped her foot in anger. She never expected the Ethan of today to be so detestable.
「The Prescott Residence」
"My, my, Chloe started school today, didn’t she!" Miss Prescott remarked, looking at the calendar.
"Yes, today’s the first day," Sophia Quinn replied.
They had wanted to go see Chloe today, to check if she was adjusting well or if she needed anything.
But on second thought, they realized they would be overstepping their boundaries. They liked Chloe, which was why they wanted to see her all the time and check if she needed help.
But to Chloe, they were the mother and grandmother of the boy who had hurt her.
So, they had to reduce the number of times they appeared before Chloe.
"That little brat is luckier than us. He gets to see Chloe every day now."
Miss Prescott sounded a little envious. He was the one who had wronged her, but now he was the one who got to see her all the time.
"Tell me about it! I never expected he would choose Southbend University too. He must have followed Chloe there!"
"What’s the use of following her? The way I see it, Chloe is probably sick of the sight of him. She must think he’s like a sticky plaster she can’t shake off. I feel embarrassed just talking about it. To think that’s my grandson." Miss Prescott sounded helpless. The thought of Ethan pained her. ’My grandson is supposed to be smart and clever!’
’How did I end up with a blockhead like Ethan?’
Hearing Miss Prescott’s words, Sophia Quinn suddenly realized that she was the one who had given birth to this "sticky plaster." ’How embarrassing!’
"Exactly! He didn’t want Chloe before, and now he’s shamelessly pestering her."
After Sophia finished, Miss Prescott nodded emphatically in agreement.
The two of them continued to complain off and on. Meanwhile, far away near Southbend University, Ethan Prescott had just returned to the house he’d bought when he let out two sneezes in a row.
He didn’t even have to guess. ’It must be my grandma and mom bad-mouthing me again.’
When he had told them he’d enrolled at Southbend, the two of them had relentlessly called him a toad lusting after a swan, shameless, a mangy dog.
So, since today was the first day of school, they were definitely talking about him.
