Chapter 209: The Beloved Original Owner Is Gone
“Alright, alright, I’ll take it.”
After Chloe York accepted the money, Sophia Quinn finally beamed. “That’s more like it. You’re going abroad, after all. It’s not like being home; it’s always good to have some extra cash on you.”
Chloe nodded. They were forcing the money into her hands—what else could she do? Still, she had to marvel at how fast money could be made in this novel’s world. Two million—even in her past life as a top university graduate working at a major corporation, it would have taken her a whole year to earn that much. Unlike now. She had only been in this world for half a year, and her net worth had already surpassed ten million.
“Miss Prescott, Madam, Miss Chloe, dinner is ready!” a maid announced. She hadn’t wanted to interrupt the warm atmosphere between the three of them, but the food was ready.
“Come on, let’s eat,” Sophia said, standing up to usher everyone to the dining room before the food got cold.
“Okay!”
The three of them sat at the dining table. Miss Prescott and Sophia kept putting food on Chloe’s plate, and soon, the food in her bowl was piled high like a small mountain.
“Grandma, Mom, that’s enough. I can’t eat all this, and my bowl is overflowing,” Chloe said helplessly. It was like this every time she visited. They would pile food onto her plate, a clear gesture of how much they truly doted on her.
“You’re too skinny. You need to eat more,” Miss Prescott said, placing another piece of chicken into Chloe’s bowl. She preferred girls to be a bit plumper. Being too thin always felt fragile to her, as if a slight bump would leave them covered in bruises. Sometimes they wouldn’t even notice the bump, only to find black and blue marks all over themselves later.
“Exactly. Plus, it’s hard to get good domestic food abroad unless you cook it yourself. Oh, how about I hire a nanny to go abroad with you and take care of you?” Sophia had suddenly realized that hiring a nanny for Chloe was the perfect solution. That way, she could have peace of mind knowing Chloe wouldn’t go hungry. If Chloe ever ran out of money, the nanny could contact her directly. She could then send funds to the nanny, who would make sure Chloe was well-fed. Moreover, she could easily and promptly send Chloe pocket money whenever needed.
“That’s a brilliant idea. We need to find someone right away. Chloe is leaving soon, and we can’t have her flying out before we find the right person.” Miss Prescott thoroughly agreed, finding the plan to be exceptionally good. With Sophia bringing it up, Miss Prescott felt her own worries ease significantly, leaving her much more reassured.
“No, no, no, that’s not necessary, Grandma, Mom. Really. I know how to cook, and I can take care of myself. You don’t need to hire anyone,” Chloe quickly declined. They had already given her so much money; how could she let them hire a nanny for her, too? It would make her look terrible, like a freeloader who just took whatever was handed to her.
“Knowing how to cook is one thing, but you’re going abroad to study. It’s so pitiful for a girl to be all alone in a foreign country. Having a nanny from home to keep you company will be wonderful.” Miss Prescott was firmly convinced that sending a nanny with Chloe was the best course of action.
“Yes, Chloe. Don’t you worry about a thing, and don’t stress over it. Mom will handle it for you.” Saying this, Sophia whipped out her phone and busily began searching for candidates, making it glaringly clear that she was dead set on having Chloe take a nanny abroad.
Chloe truly hadn’t expected Sophia and Miss Prescott to go to such lengths for her. They were so incredibly good to her—so good that it stirred a pang of guilt within her. After all, she wasn’t the original host of this body. The original girl they loved so dearly was already gone.
“Mom, let’s eat first. You can look after dinner.”
Sophia agreed. Her priority right now was to keep Chloe company during dinner. She quickly put down her phone. “Alright, Mom will eat with you first.”
After dinner, Chloe sat and chatted with Miss Prescott and Sophia for a while before deciding it was time to leave. The two women didn’t try to make her stay; they knew she must have a lot to do to prepare for her upcoming departure.
“Chloe, when we miss you, we’ll go abroad to visit you,” Miss Prescott suggested.
“Sounds great. I’ll scout the area first and find all the fun spots. When you come visit, I’ll be your tour guide and show you around.”
“It’s a deal!”
“Let us know the exact day of your flight. We’ll see you off and bring the nanny to you then.”
Chloe nodded. “Thank you, Mom. Thank you, Grandma. Truly, thank you both so much.” Her tone was earnest, and she spoke those words from the bottom of her own heart. They shared absolutely no blood relation with her, yet they treated her with such profound care. It was obvious they genuinely loved her. Their affection made up for the lack of love Chloe had felt in this world.
“Silly child! We’re a family. There’s no need for thanks!”
“Exactly. We’re your family—your grandmother and your mother. You never have to say thank you to your own family!”
“Grandma, Mom, please take good care of your health, too.”
“We will.”
Chloe got into the car, her eyes filled with reluctance as she waved goodbye. Miss Prescott and Sophia waved back, looking equally unwilling to see her go. The car started, and soon, even its taillights faded from view.
“Sigh… why does my heart feel so empty now that she’s gone?” Miss Prescott murmured, her tone tinged with melancholy.
“Tell me about it. It feels like a piece of us is missing.”
The two of them stood outside for a moment longer before heading back indoors. The second they stepped inside, they saw Ethan Prescott. Treating him as if he were invisible, Miss Prescott and Sophia walked right past him and sat down on the sofa.
Seeing his grandmother and mother act this way made Ethan feel terrible. Every time he knew Chloe was coming over, he would secretly rush home. However, knowing she didn’t want to see him, he always hid in his room. He knew about Miss Prescott and Sophia giving Chloe money just now, and he had wanted to give her money, too. But what right did he have? If he offered her cash, wouldn’t Chloe just think he was insulting her?
“Sophia, we need to find that nanny as soon as possible. She has to be extremely reliable and capable of taking excellent care of Chloe,” Miss Prescott instructed.
“Don’t worry, Mom. I’m on it!”
“How about I help find one?” Ethan suddenly interjected.
“You? Do you even know how?”
“I want to do something for Chloe, too. Let me find the nanny, and I’ll pay her salary out of my own allowance.” This was the only way Ethan could think of to do something nice for Chloe. She wouldn’t know he was the one who hired the nanny; she would assume it was Sophia. That way, she would indirectly accept his kindness.
“Ethan, you aren’t harboring any filthy thoughts again, are you?” Sophia asked, her expression darkening.
“What filthy thoughts?” Ethan didn’t immediately register what his mother meant.
“You aren’t using this ‘hiring a nanny’ excuse to plant someone to spy on Chloe, are you? Like having her secretly take pictures of Chloe, or reporting back if some boy gets too close—”
Before Sophia could finish her sentence, Ethan hastily cut her off. “Mom, what are you talking about? Is that the kind of person you think I am?”
