Chapter 150 - 149: You Really Should Change Your Surname to Bai
After a bit more small talk, Yvonne Lowell raised her hand and patted her on the head.
"Alright, you should go back to your parents now. Otherwise, they’ll probably worry we ate you alive. We can hang out again some other time when we’re free."
Zoe Vance pouted. "You’re exaggerating. By the way, are you guys going to be in Kingsland for long?"
"If nothing unexpected comes up, we’ll be here until the Spring Festival. After the New Year, it’s hard to say," Nina Jennings replied after a moment of thought.
"Great! I’ll come hang out with you guys once I’m on winter break next week! Bye, Sis Lowell! Bye, Nina!" The young girl smiled, waved at the two of them, and returned to the other side of the room.
As soon as Zoe Vance left, a number of young men and women were pushed forward by their parents to try and cozy up to them.
But before they even got close, the two women saw right through their intentions.
’Did they really think we’re so approachable that we’d talk to just anyone?’
’Even if you’re going to cozy up to us, you should at least try to hide the opportunism and calculation in your eyes.’
’Call them stupid, yet they know enough to try and get close. Call them smart, yet they seem so foolish they can’t even manage to hide it in their eyes.’
Nina Jennings linked her arm through Yvonne Lowell’s and started walking away. "Let’s go, I’m returning you to your man. This way, he won’t stab me in the back later by forbidding me from seeing our Sid."
"Tch. You think everyone’s like you?" Yvonne Lowell rolled her eyes in annoyance.
"Tsk, tsk. It’s true what they say, ’a daughter married is like water poured out.’ You’re not even married yet, and you’re already taking his side. Poor me, your sister, who raised you like a mother and father, only for you to... pfft, it’s just heartbreaking."
As she spoke, Nina Jennings raised a hand to partially cover her face, pretending to sob.
Yvonne Lowell flexed her fingers, resisting the urge to make a fist. "If you’re so set on quitting medicine to join the entertainment industry, I’ll just have Second Brother find you a bit part to start with."
"A bit part?! If I joined the entertainment industry, I’d obviously be the female lead, okay? I’d be the next Triple Crown Best Actress."
Seeing the two of them completely ignore them and walk away, the crowd didn’t dare to complain.
Besides, they hadn’t even had a chance to say hello. The two had simply walked off to talk to someone else, completely "unaware" of their intentions.
And even if they had been aware, what could anyone do if they’d given them the cold shoulder? Nothing. So, the onlookers had no choice but to abandon their attempts to curry favor.
...
Before they reached Leo Grant, he was already walking over to them.
Seeing this, Nina Jennings let go of Yvonne’s arm and pouted.
"Here. I guess I’ll reluctantly lend her to you for now."
Leo Grant took Yvonne Lowell’s hand and smoothly pulled her into his arms before turning his gaze to Nina Jennings.
"Watch your words. She was always mine."
"Hey, I’m realizing you can’t even stand to lose a verbal spar!" Nina Jennings glared at him.
With his hand resting on Yvonne Lowell’s waist, Leo Grant said nonchalantly, "If you think losing is such a blessing, feel free to do more of it yourself."
"Don’t forget, I’m the one who helped you get the girl!"
"That’s a separate matter. Even close brothers keep clear accounts."
Nina Jennings laughed in exasperation and turned to Yvonne Lowell. "Your man is something else. His fear of women doesn’t stop him from coming after me. He’s really serious about ’keeping clear accounts,’ huh."
"Pfft. Did you drop out of kindergarten? You lose an argument and go tattling to the grown-ups? And you’re tattling to *my* grown-up, at that."
"Grant! I knew her when you were still a nobody!"
"Heh. We’ve known each other since the womb, and our fate was sealed when we were children. Where do you think I was?"
"Both of you, shut up!" Yvonne Lowell’s head was buzzing from the 3D surround sound argument happening in both her ears. She raised a hand, interrupting the pair’s "spell-casting."
"From now on, I’m staying out of your arguments. Don’t come complaining to me—I’m not taking sides. You two can bicker all you want. If you really can’t stand it, go take it outside and have a fistfight. Just remember to leave the other person breathing, and make sure to drop them off at the hospital when you’re done."
After saying her piece, she smacked the hand off her waist and went to find her brother nearby.
The two of them hurried after her.
One was afraid his girlfriend would get angry and hold it against him.
The other was afraid her financial backer would get angry and cut her lab’s funding.
And most importantly, both of them were afraid of getting hit.
...
Caleb Lowell watched his younger sister approach with a blank expression, two tagalongs trailing behind her.
He raised a curious eyebrow. "What’s all this about?"
"It’s nothing. Just two elementary schoolers bickering. I thought it was too noisy," Yvonne Lowell said with a pout.
Hearing this, Caleb Lowell looked up at Leo Grant. "Why did you make Nola angry? And you were mean to Nina, too?!"
He didn’t care about judging who was right or wrong. No matter what, it was the fault of this young wolf who had made his little sister angry and argued with his other sister.
Any bond from their school days, any friendship from a childhood so close they might as well have worn the same pair of pants—it had all vanished the moment this young wolf lured his little sister away.
Standing to the side, Nina Jennings raised a hand to her mouth, trying to hide the massive grin spreading across her face.
But in the next second, Leo Grant took Yvonne Lowell’s hand and looked at her with a pitiful expression. "Big Brother is right. It’s all my fault. I shouldn’t have argued with her over something so petty. Please don’t be angry."
This sudden, masterful maneuver left the onlookers stunned.
’Holy crap! You’re such a damn fake!’
"Piss off! Who are you calling Big Brother?" Caleb Lowell’s face turned livid as he glared at him.
Leo Grant ignored him, continuing to look pitifully at Yvonne Lowell.
Yvonne Lowell was speechless. She knew he was only pretending to be pitiful, but she couldn’t bring herself to say anything harsh while looking at that face—especially when he was so hopelessly outnumbered.
She squeezed his hand a little. "Fine, I’m not angry. But this is the last time."
Then she turned to Nina Jennings. "You too."
She had no desire to play peacemaker for them forever. It was impossible to take a side, and listening to them argue just made her head hurt.
Nina Jennings pouted indignantly. "Fine. As long as he doesn’t start it."
Leo Grant wrapped an arm around her waist, a perfectly behaved expression on his face. "I won’t do it again."
’First, I’ll keep my treasure happy. If Nina Jennings tries to pick a fight again, I’ll just argue with her in secret where my treasure can’t see, hehe.’
Tsk. The Living Yama’s sudden change in demeanor made everyone cringe.
Adrian "the Burdened Schemer" Lowell came online and spoke up to change the subject.
"Sis, how do you know one of my classmates?"
Yvonne Lowell froze for a second. "You and Finn are classmates?"
"Yeah! And Zoe Vance is number one in our grade and our class beauty," the chatterbox, Martin Crawford, chimed in. "Our homeroom teacher said she was only three points shy of a perfect score on her entrance exam. Ever since she got here, she’s never lost her top spot in the grade."
Yvonne Lowell raised an eyebrow. ’What a coincidence,’ she thought.
After a moment’s thought, she added, "We met back in Country M. Since you’re all in the same class, could you two please look out for her a bit? Her health has never been very good."
Although Zoe Vance’s cousin didn’t get into Solstice, there was no guarantee she didn’t know someone who did.
"No problem, Sis/Sister Yvonne, don’t worry," the two said in unison.
For the rest of the evening, the group made idle conversation.
The coming-of-age ceremony finally drew to a close, ending amidst the clinking of glasses and lively chatter.
