Death Game in another world

Chapter 61— The Empress and the Sovereign.

Chapter 61— The Empress and the Sovereign.

The subterranean tremors from the siege weapons outside echoed like low thunder through the opulent private sanctum of Empress Vaeloria.

Massive silk drapes, woven with golden Vaelorian dragons, are billowed violently as superheated air from the palace corridor bled through the cracks of the breaking double doors.

The room was bathed in the flickering amber glow of enchanted braziers, filling the space with the heavy, seductive scent of crushed night-blooming lotus and the sharp bite of ozone.

Kaelen’s gloved hand remained firmly anchored around Empress Vaeloria’s waist for a second longer before he smoothly released her, pulling back just enough to keep his arm draped protectively around Lyra.

He did not step back out of fear, nor did he loosen his posture in submission. It was a gesture of total, unshakeable ownership—a statement that even within the heart of her empire, surrounded by a Tier-SSS spatial domain, he was not a helpless captive.

Empress Vaeloria’s golden slit eyes narrowed slightly. The ancient power simmering within her core shifted, radiating an oppressive heat that would have turned a lesser master into ash where they stood.

Yet, as she looked into Kaelen’s cold, violet eyes, she found no trace of fear.

Only the dark, calm composure of a sovereign who viewed her entire realm as nothing more than a temporary obstacle.

"You speak of conquest while standing in my private quarters, boy," Vaeloria whispered, her voice dangerously smooth, like silk drawn over a razor-sharp blade.

Her golden-clawed finger slid down his throat, resting lightly over the pulsing vein at his collarbone.

"My Royal Guard is currently tearing through the outer wards. Three hundred Tier-SS Imperial Executioners are outside those doors. You have nowhere to run."

Behind Kaelen, Lyra stepped forward, her boots clicking sharply against the polished obsidian floorboards.

Though her body was still partially heavy from the residual weight of the empress’s domain, her hand gripped the hilt of her holy blade with white-knuckled intensity.

Her blue eyes burned with fierce, protective devotion as she glared at the Empress’s hand resting on Kaelen’s neck.

"Keep your hands off him," Lyra said, her voice dripping with absolute venom. The radiant, golden mana of her silver-wing core flared around her shoulders, cutting through the dense violet pressure in the room.

She did not care if the woman before her was a Tier-SSS immortal; no one touched Kaelen in her presence without paying a price.

Kaelen didn’t turn his head, but a subtle, dark smile touched the corner of his lips at Lyra’s sharp reaction.

He reached out with his left hand, his long fingers catching Lyra’s wrist gently, pulling her smoothly to his side until her shoulder pressed flush against his dark coat.

The contrast was stark his presence holding the ruler of the Vaelorian Empire at bay while his left arm pulled his chosen knight close to his heart.

"Easy, my light," Kaelen purred softly into Lyra’s ear, his voice carrying that low, velvet cadence that instantly eased the tension in her shoulders. "Her Majesty is merely trying to negotiate from a position she lost the moment we stepped into this room."

Lyra’s breath hitched at his touch, the warmth of his fingers against her skin sending a familiar spark of heat straight to her core. She leaned into his flank, her blade remaining half-drawn as her blue eyes locked onto the Empress with lethal focus.

Empress Vaeloria observed the unyielding, exclusive bond between the two intruders, her golden eyes flickering with a mixture of irritation and cold intrigue.

"Negotiate?" Vaeloria sneered softly, though she finally stepped back, slipping out of Kaelen’s reach with a fluid, liquid motion that left faint traces of golden spatial mana in the air.

"You destroyed my primary naval fleet at Oakhaven Port. You turned my central spatial refinery at Fortress Ironclad into a volcanic crater. You have crippled my western mobilization by six months. Why should I negotiate with a terror from the outer rim?"

"Because those two facilities were built on flawed spatial architecture," Ren chimed in from the floor, his hands working furiously over his cracked console while crouching behind Kaelen.

"Your engineers were channeling unrefined raw void mana through low-density conduits. If Kaelen hadn’t overloaded them today, those reactors would have collapsed on their own within two years, taking half your imperial province with them."

The Empress glanced coldly toward Ren, her expression unreadable, though the subtle twitch of her golden crown betrayed her hidden awareness of the truth.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

The massive double doors of the private chamber shuddered violently as a massive iron battering ram, coated in anti-magic runes, smashed against the inner reinforced lock. Cracks stretched across the gilded wood, showering the marble floor with gold dust and splintered timber.

"Your Majesty!" a booming, distorted voice roared from the other side of the corridor.

"We have detected hostile spatial anomalies inside your private sanctuary! Lower the inner wards so the Royal Executioners may purge the intruders!"

Kaelen didn’t even turn around to look at the breaking doors. He kept his violet gaze fixed on Empress Vaeloria, his Void Blade humming lightly in its sheath, ready to tear open the fabric of space at a second’s notice.

"You have a choice, Empress," Kaelen said smoothly, his tone icy and absolute.

"You can let those guards break through that door and turn your private chambers into a slaughterhouse. I will kill every executioner that steps through, and in the chaos, your imperial palace will suffer the same fate as Fortress Ironclad. Or..."

Kaelen paused, taking a slow, deliberate step forward until he stood directly in front of her once more, his towering frame casting a dark shadow over her gold-embroidered robes.

"...or you activate the secret spatial escape array hidden beneath your obsidian throne, clear this chamber, and we discuss the real reason your empire is so desperate to invade the Central Realm."

Empress Vaeloria’s golden eyes widened imperceptibly. Her slit pupils contracted into thin black lines as she stared at Kaelen.

The existence of the escape array beneath her throne was a secret known only to the absolute bloodline rulers of Vaeloria; not even her high commanders knew of its presence.

"How do you know about the royal array?" Vaeloria demanded, her voice dropping an octave, heavy with ancient, suffocating pressure.

"I know how spatial magic flows," Kaelen replied coldly. "And I know when a ruler is preparing for a war, she knows she cannot win."

Outside, the heavy iron doors cracked down the center with a deafening screech of rending metal.

CRACK!

The outer lock gave way. The heavy wooden doors began to swing inward, revealing the glowing red visors and heavy halberds of dozens of Tier-SS Imperial Executioners crowding the corridor.

Empress Vaeloria looked at the breaking doors, then back at Kaelen, whose hand was already resting on the hilt of his dark blade, while Lyra’s holy light flared to absolute maximum readiness beside him.

With a cold, decisive sweep of her silk sleeves, Empress Vaeloria turned her back on the doors and walked toward her obsidian throne. She raised her right hand, her long golden nails pressing against the central dragon emblem carved into the armrest.

A blinding wall of solid, golden spatial glass slammed down directly behind the breaking wooden doors, sealing the royal executioners out in the corridor.

The heavy muffled thuds of their war hammers bounced harmlessly off the golden barrier, completely cutting off the sound of the outside world.

The room fell into a heavy, dramatic silence, broken only by the soft hum of the ancient runes activating beneath the throne floor.

Empress Vaeloria sat down on her obsidian throne, resting her chin on her hand as she looked down at Kaelen, Lyra, and Ren with cold, calculating amusement.

"You have three minutes before my grand inquisitors break through that golden barrier," the empress said softly, her golden eyes burning through the dim light of the chamber.

"Speak, Sovereign. Tell me why I shouldn’t let this world burn."

Kaelen stepped up to the base of the throne steps, his hand sliding down to wrap firmly around Lyra’s fingers, locking her hand in his. Lyra looked up at him, her blue eyes shining with absolute trust as she squeezed his hand back, ready for whatever game of high-stakes political war lay ahead.

"Three minutes," Kaelen murmured, his dark violet eyes gleaming with lethal confidence. "It is more than enough time to rewrite the fate of this continent."
