Chapter 105: 105: BETWEEN LIFE AND DEATH
----------------------
The drive to the hospital felt like a blur of gray roads and flickering streetlights because William's mind was spinning with a thousand terrifying thoughts, and he followed Mrs. Gabriel to the hospital.
When they finally pulled into the parking lot of the massive medical center, the sterile, white building looked cold and intimidating against the morning sky. He sprinted through the sliding glass doors and followed Mrs. Gabriel through the quiet, lemon-scented hallways until they reached a heavy wooden door in the intensive care unit.
As the door swung open, the first thing William heard was the rhythmic, haunting beep of a heart monitor, and his breath caught in his throat as he saw his father lying painfully on the high hospital bed.
Mr. Gill looked smaller and more fragile than William had ever seen him, and his face was pale and bruised while several clear tubes ran from his arms to various machines that hummed softly in the corner. Seeing his strong, hardworking father reduced to such a helpless state was more than William could handle, and he immediately burst into tears, his legs giving way until he was slumped in a chair by the bedside.
He reached out to grab his father's limp hand, which felt cold and heavy in his own, and he began to sob uncontrollably while asking everyone in the room what could have possibly caused such a horrific tragedy. The nurses moved quietly around them, checking levels and adjusting blankets, but their silence only made William's desperation grow until he turned to Mrs. Gabriel with eyes that were red and filled with a deep, agonizing pain.
Mrs. Gabriel stepped closer and placed a comforting hand on William's shoulder, her own voice shaking as she prepared to tell the story she had been keeping secret for days.
"It happened last week, William, while you were preparing for the matches of the season," she began, looking down at the floor as if she could still see the accident unfolding in her mind.
"Your father went to the office building down the street to do his usual cleaning shift, but he didn't know that the large, heavy conference table in the main room was faulty and had a loose leg. Because he is so dedicated to his work, he tried to lift the massive table on his own and propped it up on a large stone so he could clean the dust and grime from beneath the base."
William listened with a growing sense of horror as Mrs. Gabriel described how the heavy stone had shifted unexpectedly under the weight of the mahogany wood.
"As he was leaning under it, the table slipped off the stone and crashed down directly on top of him, and the impact was so great that he lost consciousness immediately," she explained, her voice dropping to a whisper.
"He was trapped there for quite some time before the security guards found him and called for help, and by the time the ambulance arrived, he was already in a deep coma." The imagery of his father trapped under a heavy table in a dark, empty office building sent a fresh wave of agony through William's heart, and he buried his face in his hands as the guilt began to eat him alive.
The sorrow in the room quickly turned into a hot, burning anger because William remembered how many times he had pleaded with his father to quit that exhausting cleaning job.
"I warned him so many times!" William cried out, his voice echoing off the sterile walls as he stood up and paced the small room with a look of pure frustration.
"I told Mr. Gill that he didn't need to disturb himself with that job anymore because I was making enough money to take care of us both, but he was so stubborn and insisted on continuing because he wanted to earn his own way. He shouldn't have been there, and he shouldn't have been lifting that table alone, yet he never listened because he always wanted to be the one providing for the family!"
William's anger was also directed at the people around him who had kept him in the dark while he was out on the pitch chasing his dreams. Mrs. Gabriel looked at him with sad, watery eyes and explained that the decision to keep the secret was made out of love for his future.
"We all talked about it, and your father's last wish before he slipped further away was that you shouldn't be distracted in your career," she said softly.
"He knew how much the promotion meant to you and to the city of Blackpool, and he didn't want his accident to be the reason you lost your focus or failed to achieve your destiny. We wanted you to have your moment of glory, William, because your father believed that seeing you succeed would be the best medicine he could ever receive."
Even though he understood their reasons, William felt a bitter sense of resentment because he would have traded every goal and every cheer just to be by his father's side when he was hurt.
He couldn't stand the sight of the quiet ward for another second, so he stood up and walked out into the hallway, his heart pounding with a need for answers and a plan for the future. He searched the corridor until he found the head physician, a tall man with graying hair and a calm expression whose name tag read Dr. Kylian. William grabbed the doctor's arm with a desperate grip, his eyes pleading for some kind of hope that his father would survive this nightmare.
"Dr. Kylian, please tell me the way forward," William begged, his voice cracking with emotion. "I don't care about the cost or the time; I just need my father to get himself back again and be the man he used to be. Tell me what we have to do to wake him up." Dr. Kylian looked at the young man with a professional yet sympathetic gaze and led him to a small desk where a series of brain scans were displayed on a computer screen.
He pointed to the flickering images and explained that while the physical injuries to the ribs and legs were healing, the main concern was the trauma to the head caused by the sudden impact of the table.
"He needs to regain consciousness on his own, William, and that is exactly what we are working on around the clock," Dr. Kylian said in a steady, reassuring tone. "We have him on the best medication possible to reduce the swelling in his brain, and we are monitoring his vitals every second to ensure there are no setbacks. You should be rest assured that he is receiving the highest level of care, but now it is a matter of time and his own inner strength to find his way back to us." The doctor's words provided a small flicker of hope, but they didn't erase the heavy cloud of uncertainty that was hanging over William's head like a storm that refused to break.
William walked back to his father's room and sat by the bed once more, his mind racing as he compared the two versions of his life that had collided in the last twenty-four hours.
Yesterday, he was the king of the pitch, surrounded by thousands of fans who chanted his name and celebrated him as a legend, but today, he was just a brokenhearted son crying in a quiet hospital room.
The transition from the peak of professional success to the depth of personal tragedy was so sudden that it felt like he was living in a nightmare from which he couldn't wake up. He looked at his father's pale face and wondered if he would ever hear his voice again or if the last words they spoke would be the ones they shared before the Norwich game.
The restlessness in his soul was becoming unbearable because he didn't know how he was supposed to go back to being a football player while his father was fighting for every breath. William leaned his head against the edge of the bed and closed his eyes, praying for a miracle that would bring his father back to him.
As the morning sun climbed higher in the sky, the hospital remained a place of hushed whispers and soft footsteps, leaving William alone with his thoughts and his grief. He knew that his life would never be the same after this, and he wondered if he would ever find the strength to step onto a football pitch again without his father watching from the stands.
The future was a dark and unknown road, and as he sat there holding the hand of the man who had raised him. He promised himself that he wouldn't leave his father's side for a single moment, because even though he had conquered the Championship, he need to be with his father too.
Suddenly, there was a loud beep from the machine in the ward.
