GEM TALENT

Chapter 88: 88: A CHOICE BETWEEN LOYALTY AND AMBITION

The air inside the Blackpool dressing room was thick with the scent of sweat, deep-heat cream, and pure, unadulterated joy because the victory over Coventry City had been a hard-fought battle.

The walls seemed to vibrate with the sound of players shouting and thumping the lockers, while the speakers in the corner blasted a high-energy song that matched the rhythmic pounding of their hearts.

Even the medical staff, who were usually very serious and focused on their work, were wearing wide smiles as they packed away their kits. It was a moment of total unity for a team that had faced so much internal tension just a few weeks ago, and William sat in the middle of it all, feeling the cold weight of an ice pack wrapped tightly around his throbbing ankle.

The door swung open with a loud bang, and Coach Lincoln stepped into the room with a grin so wide it seemed to light up the entire space. The music was turned down instantly because everyone wanted to hear what the leader of their successful campaign had to say.

Lincoln didn't say anything at first, he just stood there with his hands on his hips, nodding slowly at each player as if he were memorizing the faces of heroes. When he finally spoke, his voice was thick with emotion, yet it carried the authority of a man who knew his team was on the verge of something historic.

"Look at yourselves," Lincoln started, his eyes landing on Morgan and then moving to Reed and William.

"You fought for every inch of that grass today, and because of that grit, we are now sitting in the second position on the league table. We have seventy-five points, and while Swansea has been leading since the very first day of the season, they can finally feel our breath on their necks." The room erupted in another cheer, but Lincoln raised his hand to quiet them down because he wasn't finished yet.

"We are close, but we cannot afford to relax even for a second. To reward your effort, you are getting tomorrow off, and I'm giving you the second day as a holiday too. However, the day after that, I want everyone back to the training base early for a focused gym session to build our strength for the final push."

Lincoln walked over to William and placed a heavy, paternal hand on his shoulder, looking down at the bandaged ankle with a mixture of concern and pride.

"I am incredibly happy with everyone's contribution today, but I want you all to focus on recovery. William, you especially need to rest your body because you gave everything in that first half, and we need your vision on the pitch for the next game." William nodded, promising the coach that he would follow the medical advice to the letter, but inside his mind, his thoughts were already drifting away from the league table and the upcoming gym sessions.

While the rest of the players began to peel off their muddy jerseys and head for the showers, William remained seated, staring at the floor. He had promised himself he would rest, but his mind was occupied by the mystery of Reed.

He had told William to meet him at the team apartment tonight, and now that the excitement of the match was fading, he began to feel a sense of nervous anticipation.

He didn't know if Reed would show up with more bad words, or if he would offer words of encouragement, or perhaps even reveal a secret that had been hidden behind his cold exterior for months. The uncertainty was like a slow-burning fire in his chest, making him feel more restless than the injury ever could.

The celebration eventually began to wind down as the clock ticked toward late evening, and the team captain, Fernandes, clapped his hands loudly to get everyone's attention.

"Alright, lads, let's pack it up! The bus is waiting, and I don't want the gaffer waiting for us on the curb," he shouted, his voice echoing through the tiled room. Everyone moved quickly to pack their belongings into their designer duffel bags, and William struggled to stand up, his ankle sending a sharp, electric jolt of pain through his leg.

He gritted his teeth and leaned against the wall for support, refusing to show how much it actually hurt because he didn't want to dampen the mood of the victory.

The walk to the team bus was slow and painful for William, but he managed to limp through the parking lot where a few dedicated fans were still waiting to catch a glimpse of their heroes. He climbed the steps of the bus carefully and found a seat beside Coleman, the man that behave like his father and who had always been a quiet mentor to him.

William chose the window side so he could lean his head against the cool glass, and as the engine roared to life and the bus began its journey back to the training base, the exhaustion of the day finally crashed over him like a wave.

The sharp pain in his ankle eventually turned into a dull, rhythmic throb, and within minutes, the swaying motion of the bus lulled him into a deep, dreamless sleep.

When William finally opened his eyes, the bus was pulling into the familiar surroundings of the training base, and the moonlight was casting long, silver shadows across the empty practice pitches. He felt a hand on his shoulder shaking him gently, and he looked up to see Coleman smiling at him.

"We're home, kid. Get some sleep," the coach said before disappearing down the aisle.

William rubbed his eyes and stood up, feeling the stiffness in his joints, and as he stepped off the bus, the chilly night air made him shiver. He realized then that he was in a bit of a predicament because it was very late, and he didn't have a way to get back to his apartment.

William didn't know how to drive yet, and because he spent most of his time studying or training, he hadn't had the chance to get his driver's license.

He couldn't own a car until the paperwork was done, and since he didn't want to bother his parents at this hour, he was prepared to call a taxi. However, before he could reach for his phone, a pair of bright headlights flashed in his direction, and a sleek, modern car pulled up beside him.

The window rolled down to reveal Fernandes, the team captain and a prolific winger who had provided the cross for the winning own-goal earlier that evening.

"It's too late to be waiting for a cab, William," Fernandes said, his voice friendly and inviting. "Hop in. I'll give you a lift back to the apartment. I know your ankle is killing you, and you shouldn't be standing on it more than you have to." William didn't hesitate to accept the offer because his leg felt like it was made of lead, and he carefully climbed into the passenger seat, sighing with relief as he sank into the soft leather.

The car smelled like expensive cologne and new upholstery, and as Fernandes pulled away from the base, the silence of the night settled between them.

The drive was quiet at first, with the streetlights of Blackpool blurring past the windows in a blue streak. William watched the familiar landmarks pass by, thinking about the two days off he had been granted and how he would spend them resting and trying to be fit for the next matches, he did not want to miss any of them.

He felt grateful for the kindness Fernandes was showing him, especially when he was facing a lot of opposition, he was one of those that had encouraged him not to relent.

As they turned onto the main road that led toward the team apartment. Fernandes slowed the car down slightly and gripped the steering wheel a little tighter. He glanced over at William, his expression unreadable in the dim light of the dashboard.

The atmosphere in the car suddenly shifted from casual to serious, and William felt a strange prickle of intuition on the back of his neck.

"William," Fernandes began, his voice low and steady. "I've been watching you since the day you arrived, and I've seen how you handle the pressure both on and off the pitch. You're a smart kid, maybe the smartest I've ever played with." He paused for a moment, as if he were carefully choosing the right words to use.

The first question Fernandes asked him caught William completely off guard, making his heart skip a beat and forcing him to turn his full attention toward the man driving the car.

"If Blackpool got promoted to the premier league, are you going to go back to Chelsea even if Blackpool wants to sign you permanently, I know you are from Chelsea, but how do you intend of doing that.?"
