GEM TALENT

Chapter 85: 85: THE TURNING POINT

------------------

The referee blew the silver whistle to start the match, and immediately, the air at Bloomfield Road was filled with the deafening sound of thousands of fans cheering for their respective teams.

The game was only in its third minute when Coventry City began to show why they were also fighting for a spot in the Premier League, and they started playing from the back with a level of technical skill that made the Blackpool players work extra hard to close down the spaces.

The Coventry defenders moved the ball between themselves with great composure, and suddenly, their goalkeeper, Curry, spotted an opening in the Blackpool defense that no one else had noticed yet.

Curry stepped up to the ball at the goalkick spot and sent a massive, booming long ball that traveled nearly sixty yards through the night air, landing perfectly on the left wing where their most dangerous attacker, Tammy, was waiting.

Tammy controlled the ball with a soft touch that made the crowd gasp, and he immediately drove forward with incredible speed toward the Blackpool penalty area. Reed, who was playing as the right-back, tried to stay between Tammy and the goal, but the attacker was too quick and used a clever body feint to skip past him on the outside.

Tammy didn't even look up as he struck the ball with the outside of his boot, sending a curling, powerful shot toward the far post that looked like it was destined to hit the back of the net. The stadium went silent for a heartbeat as the ball flew past the outstretched arms of Walker, the Blackpool goalkeeper, but fortunately for the home side, the shot was just a few inches too wide.

It was a terrifying near miss that shook the confidence of the Blackpool defenders, and it served as a loud warning that Coventry had come to win the match at all costs.

Coach Lincoln was already active on the touchline, waving his arms and shouting instructions to his players to stay focused and not let the early pressure get to their heads. He could see that his team was struggling to keep up with the frantic pace of the game, so he kept telling them to breathe and stay organized in their lowblock system.

However, as the clock reached the ten-minute mark, it became obvious to everyone in the stadium that William was not yet playing at his prime level. Having been away for his final exams, William looked like he was struggling to find his rhythm on the grass, and he was moving as if his legs were made of heavy lead.

He lost possession twice in the middle of the pitch because he was taking too many touches, and he was playing with a timid, hesitant style that made him look like he was scared of making a mistake.

The fans in the stands began to murmur with concern as they watched their young star struggle, and even the Coventry midfielders noticed his lack of confidence and began to press him even harder whenever he received the ball.

During a brief break in play caused by a foul near the center circle, Coach Lincoln signaled for William to come over to the touchline for a quick talk. The coach looked William directly in the eyes, his expression serious but not angry, because he knew that the transition from a desk to a high-stakes football match was a difficult one to make.

"William, listen to me carefully because you are still playing the match inside your head instead of on this pitch," Lincoln said, his voice firm and encouraging. He told William to stop overthinking the physics of the ball and to start trusting the instincts that had made him a hero in the first place.

"You spent weeks being a student, but right now, you are a warrior, and a warrior does not fear the shadows of the opposition," Lincoln added, placing a hand on William's shoulder to ground him.

He advised William to play simple, one-touch passes for the next five minutes to build up his confidence, and he told him to feel the vibration of the grass under his boots to remind himself that he was home.

"Don't worry about being the best player on the pitch right now; just be the hardest worker, and the rest of your game will follow," the coach concluded, sending William back into the battle with a final pat on the back. William nodded his head, trying to absorb the advice, but the game was still moving so fast that he felt like he was drowning in a sea of sky-blue jerseys.

Coventry continued to attack with a relentless aggression that made it look like they wanted to completely destroy Blackpool before the first half was over.

They used their wingers to deliver dangerous crosses into the box, and their midfielders were constantly looking for a through ball to split the Blackpool center-backs, Johnson and Brooks.

The Blackpool fans were not happy with the way the match was going, and a few boos could be heard from the stands as the home team struggled to even get the ball out of their own half.

It felt like a goal for Coventry was inevitable, and the pressure was becoming so intense that some of the younger Blackpool players were starting to look panicked and disorganized.

Just as the situation was looking its worst, Fernandes, the captain, realized that his team needed a leader to pull them back from the edge of disaster. During a throw-in, he called the entire squad together for a quick huddle, and his eyes were burning with a fierce, unbreakable determination that demanded their total attention.

"Look at each other and remember why we are out here!" Fernandes shouted, his voice cutting through the noise of the crowd. He reminded them of the unbeaten mission they had started and the ultimate goal of qualifying for the Premier League that was now within their reach.

"We are not going to let them take our dream away in our own home, so stand tall and fight for every inch of this grass!" his words acted like a spark of electricity that reignited the spirit of the team, and even the tired players seemed to find a new source of energy.

William stood on the edge of the huddle, and as the captain spoke, he reached down and slowly untied the laces of his metallic studs. This was a small, symbolic ritual he had learned from his father, a way to signal to himself that he was resetting his mind and starting a fresh game.

He pulled the laces tight, feeling the familiar pressure against his feet, and as he stood back up, the look of fear and hesitation had vanished from his eyes. He realized that Lincoln was right; he was a warrior, and he had already conquered much bigger challenges in the examination hall than a game of football.

When the match started again, a sudden and dramatic change washed over the Blackpool squad, and they began to dominate the possession with a level of confidence that had been missing for the first twenty minutes.

The transition from defense to attack became much smoother as William, Coleman, and Barco began to dictate the tempo of the game with quick, precise passes. They used their one-two pass combinations to bypass the Coventry press, and they started to look for the overlap runs of their fullbacks to create space on the wings.

The fans at Bloomfield Road noticed the change immediately, and their boos were replaced by a rhythmic chanting that filled the stadium with a powerful energy. Blackpool was no longer sitting back in a deep lowblock; instead, they were pushing forward as a single unit, hunting for a way to break through the Coventry defense and reclaim their dominance.

Suddenly, a massive opportunity presented itself when Coleman made a perfectly timed interception in the middle of the park, poking the ball away from a Coventry midfielder just as he was about to turn.

The ball landed at the feet of William, who didn't hesitate for a single microsecond as he looked up and saw the entire Coventry team caught out of position. He knew that this was the moment they had been waiting for, and he immediately triggered a lightning-fast counter-attack by driving forward with the ball at his feet.

The transition was so rapid that it left the sky-blue defenders scrambling to get back into their defensive shape, and William could see the gaps opening up like a map of victory in front of his eyes.

He spotted Valentino sprinting down the right wing, and he also saw Morgan making a direct run into the heart of the penalty area, pulling the center-backs away from each other. William's mind was now as sharp as a razor, and he felt the familiar vibration of the grass as he prepared to deliver a pass that could change the entire course of the match.

He drew the last remaining Coventry midfielder toward him, creating even more space for his teammates, and his finger was hovering over the metaphorical trigger. The stadium held its breath, and the noise of the fans reached a fever pitch as everyone realized that a goal was only a few seconds away.

William shifted his weight, his eyes locked on the target, and he prepared to unleash a through ball that would split the defense wide open. The counter-attack was in full motion, the momentum was with Blackpool, and the outcome of the battle was hanging by a single, perfectly timed pass.
