GEM TALENT

Chapter 48: 48: THE FINAL HOURS

The sun was beginning to dip lower in the sky, as the team moved into the most critical part of their tactical session.

Although the earlier drills had been about keeping their legs moving, this specific portion of the afternoon was dedicated entirely to the art of the set-piece because Coach Lincoln knew that a single corner or free kick could be the difference between a win and a loss.

The atmosphere on the pitch was strangely heavy and quiet because the coach had issued a strict warning that no player was allowed to

speak a single negative word or engage in any form of trash talk. He wanted a "silent sanctuary" where the only things that mattered were focus, precision, and the sound of the ball, so the players moved like shadows across the green turf.

William stood at the edge of the penalty area, his heart thumping with a mix of excitement and nerves as the coaching staff called out the names of the designated specialists.

He felt a surge of pride when he was told to join

Fernandes and Coleman at the corner flag, marking him as one of the three primary corner kick takers for the big match. Since Fernandes was the captain and a veteran, he stepped up first to set the tone, and with a short, clinical

run-up, he struck the ball with the inside of his boot.

Whack!!!!!!

The sound of the impact echoed through the silent stadium like a gunshot, and the ball soared into the air, curving beautifully toward the far post where the strikers were waiting.

Thuuuuud!!!!!

Ibrahim met the ball with a powerful header, sending it flying into the back of the net with a satisfying shot that rippled the white netting.

Next was William's turn, and as he walked toward the corner arc, he felt the weight of his father's expectations and the coach's trust resting on his shoulders. He carefully placed the ball on the white line, ensuring the valve

was facing away from him just like he had practiced a thousand times.

He took a deep breath to calm his racing mind, and then he moved forward with a sharp,

rhythmic stride.

Ffffeeeeew!!!!!

His foot sliced through the air, and the ball took

off on a high, dipping trajectory that seemed to defy gravity for a split second. It bypassed the first defender and landed exactly in the "corridor of uncertainty," forcing the goalkeeper to scramble as a teammate tapped it in.

The ball hit the back of the net, and although no one cheered, the satisfied nods from the coaching staff told William everything he needed to know.

While the corner kickers continued their work, another group was gathered near the "D" of the penalty box to practice direct free kicks. This group was led by Alonso, whose powerful leg muscles were a testament to his dedication to the craft, and Harris, who was known for his incredible finesse.

Alonso stepped up to the ball, his face a mask of pure, cold concentration as he prepared his

famous "power shot." He struck the ball with the laces of his boot

Booooom!!!!!

and the ball traveled like a heat-seeking missile, screaming through the air with

terrifying speed. It bypassed the training wall and smashed into the top corner of the net, causing the metal frame to vibrate with a loud Clang! that resonated across the entire facility.

Harris followed him, but instead of using raw power, he chose to use a delicate, curling technique that required extreme precision.

He moved toward the ball and wrapped his foot around it, sending it spinning in a wide arc that seemed to be going out of play before it suddenly snapped back toward the goal.

The ball nestled into the side netting.

William watched them from across the pitch, absorbing their techniques and realizing that if he wanted to be the best, he had to master both the power of Alonso and the grace of Harris.

Throughout this entire session, the silence remained unbroken, creating a tension that felt like a coiled spring waiting to be released.

William was acutely aware of Reed and Barco standing nearby as part of the defensive wall,

and he could see the frustration boiling just beneath their surfaces.

In the past, they would have used this time to whisper insults or try to get inside his head with snide remarks, but today, they were trapped by the coach's "no bad words" rule. They could only grunt and huff beneath their breath as they watched William deliver one perfect cross after another.

William noticed their clutched fists and their angry glares, but he simply looked past them because he knew that their silence was a sign of his growing dominance. He felt a sense of

maturity washing over him, realizing that he no longer needed to argue with them when his football was doing all the talking.

As the training session finally drew to a close, Coach Lincoln blew a long, sharp whistle that signaled the end of their tactical work. The players gathered their water bottles in silence and began the walk back to the dressing room,

their footsteps making a rhythmic sound on the gravel path.

William felt a profound sense of clarity as he entered the facility, the cool indoor air feeling like a reward after the intensity of the sun. He walked straight to his locker and sat down, his mind already shifting from the training ground to the 8 PM kickoff at the stadium.

He reached into the back of his locker and pulled out a small, velvet bag that contained the special match-day boots his father had bought for him.

He ran his hand over the polished leather, feeling the sharp, metallic studs that were

designed to bite into the turf under the bright stadium lights. He had kept them tucked away all week, refusing to use them in training because he wanted them to be perfectly pristine for the moment he stepped onto the pitch for the real war.

He set them carefully on the bench, and as he began to change out of his training kit, he felt a renewed sense of purpose.

The dressing room was a hive of quiet activity as the players began to prepare for the journey. Some were getting quick massages from the

physiotherapists, while others were focused on their pre-match rituals.

William took a quick shower to wash away the salt and sweat of the session, and when he returned to his locker, he began to dress in the official Blackpool team suit. He made sure his white shirt was crisp and his tie was perfectly centered, because he knew that looking like a professional was the first step toward playing like one. He stepped into his dress shoes, and grabbed his bag, making sure his special boots were safely tucked inside.

Once the entire squad was dressed in their sharp suits, they moved as one toward the exit where the massive team bus was waiting. The vehicle was a beast of polished metal and glass, its engine already idling with a deep, vibrating that seemed to shake the very ground.

The players climbed the steps in a disciplined line, the interior of the bus smelling of expensive cottons and fresh air. William found his usual seat by the window and sat down, clutching his bag to his chest as he watched the familiar surroundings of the training center disappear behind them.

As the bus pulled out of the parking lot and onto the main road, the orange glow of the streetlamps began to flicker to life, signaling the start of the evening.

The silence from the pitch followed them onto the bus, with most of the players wearing large, noise-canceling headphones to stay in the zone. William leaned his head against the cool glass of the window, watching the city of Blackpool wake up for the night match. He could see fans in black and green scarves walking toward the stadium, their faces filled with hope and excitement, and he felt a surge of adrenaline as he realized he was the one they were coming to see.

The journey to the stadium was short, but it felt like a transition into a different world where the stakes were higher and the pressure was absolute.

William thought about the thud of the ball and the swish of the net from the afternoon session, and he knew that he was ready. He wasn't just a boy with a dream anymore; he was a key part of a machine that was built for victory.

As the bus turned the final corner and the massive, glowing floodlights of the stadium

came into view, William gripped his bag a little tighter.

The time for training was over, and the time for the 8 PM whistle was finally here. He was ready to wear his father's boots, step onto that grass, and show Bristol City exactly what a world-class midfielder looked like.
