Chapter 45: 45 : THE NIGHT BEFORE THE BATTLE
-----------------
The evening air was beginning to turn chilly as the taxi driver pulled into the parking lot of the apartment complex where several of the players stayed.
The orange glow of the streetlamps reflected off the polished metal of the vehicles, creating a quiet and peaceful atmosphere that stood in stark contrast to the shouting and chaos of the training ground.
William felt a deep sense of relief as he stepped out of the car, his muscles groaning from the day's exertion, yet his mind was already shifting toward the comfort of his bed.
However, before he could reach the front entrance, he saw Fernandes standing by the main lobby doors, waving him over along with Coleman and Morgan, who were just arriving as well.
Fernandes, ever the diligent captain, had been tasked by the coaching staff to deliver a final set of instructions before the team settled in for the night.
Once the small group had gathered in the lobby, Fernandes held up a hand to get their full attention, his expression serious but encouraging.
"Listen up, everyone, because I have a message from Coach Lincoln regarding tomorrow's schedule," Fernandes began, his voice echoing slightly against the marble
floors.
"The match against Bristol City is a late kickoff at eight o'clock tomorrow night, so the plan has changed slightly to ensure we stay fresh.
There will be a very light, tactical training session tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock just to keep our legs moving and our minds sharp."
He paused for a second, looking each of them in the eye to make sure the importance of the message hit home.
"The coach wants everyone inside their
apartments and resting immediately. No late-night movies, no hanging out in the lounge, and definitely no heavy lifting. We need every ounce of energy for that 8 PM whistle because Bristol is going to bring a war to our doorstep. Go get some sleep, eat a clean dinner, and I'll see you all at the bus tomorrow."
William nodded, appreciating the clarity of the plan, and he watched as the other players began to disperse toward their respective elevators, their faces showing the same exhaustion he felt.
As William walked toward his own door, he noticed Morgan and a younger reserve player engaged in a bit of restless sparring in the hallway, their adrenaline clearly still pumping from the afternoon session.
It was a common sight among the athletes, as they often used play-fighting to burn off the lingering nervous energy that came with a big match.
Harris stood, showing others that he is very prepared by doing some drills all of them have done, he jump on his toe, twisting his body and dancing, he called others to join him so that they can remain active all through the night. He told them that doing this all through the night help them stay fit for matches. They all laughed and Morgan stood up to mimic him by joining him but later voiced out
"Save it for the pitch!" Morgan joked, releasing the clinch and giving the boy a friendly pat on the back.
William smiled as he watched the brief display of physical skill, noting how even in their "play," the players used advanced styles like squatting and bending to stay sharp. It was a reminder that they were all elite performers, and every movement they made was a testament to their dedication to the craft.
---------------------
Finally, William entered his apartment and shut the world out, the silence of the room wrapping around him like a warm blanket. After a quick shower to wash away the salt and sweat of the day, he sat on the edge of his bed and picked up his phone, knowing there was one person he needed to speak with before he could
truly rest.
He dialed his father's number, and after only two rings, the familiar, deep voice of his dad filled the room. They went through the usual
pleasantries, but William's tone soon became more focused as he brought up the topic that had been weighing on his mind for weeks.
"Dad, I've been thinking a lot about the next few months," William said, staring at a poster of his favorite football stadium on the wall.
"My final exams are coming up next month, and I've been studying hard to make sure I graduate with good marks. But I wanted to tell you that once I have that diploma in my hand, I
want to put everything else on hold. I want to focus entirely on football. I want to give it one hundred percent of my heart and soul."
There was a long pause on the other end of the line, the kind of silence that made William's heart beat a little faster. His father was a man who valued education above almost everything else, believing that a sharp mind was the only thing that could truly protect a person in the long run.
"William, you know how I feel about this," his father finally replied, his voice calm but layered with a hint of concern.
"I've always advised you not to focus on football only. The world is a big place, and I want you to be good everywhere—in the classroom, in business, and on the field. A career in sports can be very short, and a
well-rounded man is a successful man."
William took a deep breath, prepared for this disagreement because he knew his father only wanted the best for him.
"I understand that, Dad, I really do,"
William countered, his voice steady and respectful. "But to be the best in this game, to reach the level that Kyle is at or the level of the legends we talk about, I can't have one foot in a textbook and one foot on the grass. I'm not
saying I'm dropping education forever. I'm just saying I want to drop it for now so I can reach my peak while I'm young. I can always go back and further my studies later in life, but I only have one chance to become a world-class
player."
He could hear his father sigh, a sound of contemplation that suggested the man
was weighing William's passion against his own fears. After a few moments, the tension seemed to soften.
"Alright, William," his father said, his voice
sounding a bit more proud. "If you promise me that you will complete your graduation first and that you will return to your studies when the time is right, then I will agree to this condition. If you want to be the best, you have to be fearless, and I can see that you've already made up your mind, but I want you to be excellent in all the ways, both in your football career and your educatio. I know you can get there my boy."
A huge weight lifted off William's chest, and he felt a renewed sense of energy coursing through him. With the blessing of his father, he felt as though he could fly, and the two of them spent the next twenty minutes discussing the
tactical details of the Bristol City match.
His father asked about the team's formation and how the coaches planned to handle the pressure of being at the top of the table. William explained the roles of Morgan and Ibrahim, and how their positioning would be the key to breaking down the Bristol defense.
He talked about the light training session tomorrow and the intensity of the night match,
feeling his father's excitement mirror his own through the phone.
"Give them everything you've got, son," his father said as they prepared to hang up.
"Play like it's the last game of your life, but remember to stay smart. Use your vision, and don't let those bullies get into your head."
William promised he would, and as the call ended, he felt a profound sense of clarity. The path ahead was finally clear: graduate, focus on the beautiful game, and become the
champion he was born to be.
He set his phone on the nightstand and pulled the covers up, the darkness of the room feeling peaceful and inviting. Outside, the city of Blackpool was beginning to settle down for the night, but inside the hearts of the players, a fire was burning.
Tomorrow would be a day of high stakes and high pressure, a night where legends were made and dreams were either realized or shattered. William closed his eyes, his mind replaying the movements of the day—the squats in the gym, the sprints on the pitch, and the sound of the ball hitting the net.
He was no longer just a boy with a dream; he was a professional athlete with a plan, and
as he drifted off into a deep, restful sleep, he knew that Bristol City wouldn't know what hit them. The journey to the top was just beginning, and William was ready to walk that path with every bit of strength he possessed.
